Presessional English for Academic Purposes The Centre for English Language Education (CELE) runs a 5-week Built Environment English language and study skills course. If you are close to the English language level you need to go on to your MSc course and you meet the entry requirements for the relevant CELE course, you may be eligible for a joint offer. The MArch Design is offered on a full-time basis over one year. In the autumn and spring semesters, you will complete 120 credits worth of modules. The ITA master is a new European two-year master programme within the EIT Digital Master School “ICT Innovation”. The aim of the EIT (European Institute of Innovation and Technology) is to breed a new generation of technology-skilled entrepreneurs by enhancing high-profile technology education with a strong business orientation. For the field of ICT, the EIT has created through the KIC ICT Labs (one of the Knowledge and Innovation Communities), several ICT master programmes to combine ICT engineering on an advanced level with a business minor focused on Innovation and Entrepreneurship (I&E). The goal is to make students that take part in this education the elite group of forthcoming ICT professionals. Internet Technology and Architecture The technical major in Internet Technology and Architecture is a focused programme of study involving advanced networking technologies and architectures for the design and management of modern distributed computer systems and networks. This programme is in line with the challenging field of computing communication and networking technologies that has lately received considerable attention and is today considered as a major topic for most curriculum studies in IT. Programme The aim of the Internet Technology and Architecture programme is to develop a coherent set of theoretical knowledge and professional understandings and skills in computer networks. Emphasis is placed on understanding of current research issues as well as detailed practical experience of network design, development, implementation, and management. The first year will be similar at the four entry points UPMC, TUB, KTH and UNITN with four basic courses on the foundations of networking, network design and modelling, wireless and mobile computing, and advanced next generation networks. In addition, some elective courses may be chosen to prepare for a specialisation. This programme also includes an I&E minor that will provide students with both theoretical concepts and practical tools that will develop critical thinking in assessing entrepreneurship opportunities and devising appropriate strategies to turn ideas into profitable business ventures. Intensive urban fieldwork is complemented by regular consultations with teachers. History of the program Combining influences from typomorphological approach of Aldo Rossi and conceptual urbanism of Rem Koolhaas’ OMA, the program was established by professor Jan Verwijnen in early 2000s. From the start, the Urban Studies curriculum linked architecture to philosophy, urban history, critical economic theory, cultural studies and knowledge of new planning tools. The driving idea was to re-ground architecture and urbanism, so that projects – defined as “urban interventions” – would grow from contemporary urban phenomena, not from ossified professional practices or historical models. The program was characterised by an intense interest in everyday life, its spatial context and new conceptualisations of space as a process. The first Urban Studies Days were organised in 2004. The aim was to bring in high-level international experts and to discuss Tallinn’s planning and urban development in the spirit of Berlin’s Stadtforum. Later the event was renamed Urban and Landscape Days, and it is organised annually in April or May. In 2005, Panu Lehtovuori took the responsibility in 2005 to run the program and develop the curriculum. Since autumn 2012, the program has been led by Dr. Maros Krivy. STUDIES The Master’s program in Urban Studies provides the students with: theoretical ground for understanding urban history and contemporary urban development, practical research and methodological skills for analysing urban situations in a rich, comprehensive and interdisciplinary way, design skills engaging the student in work on urban and spatial planning, international and comparative perspective. Pedagogically, the curriculum consists of: lectures courses, in which key debates in contemporary urban studies an architectural theory is presented, reading seminars, where students are engaged in critical discussion of these debates, semester-long research studios, the core element of the program, in which students analyse, engage and propose solutions to ‘real’ urban situations, utilising wide range of planning (scenario planning, interventions) and academic (interviews, observation, archival research) methods, seminaries held by invited lecturers, who provide expert knowledge on multiple fields central to the urban question (geography, history, art history, detailed planning, software tools), annually changing workshops and courses on topical themes, which are shared between first and second year MA students, helping the two groups to integrate. Design is experiencing a time of strong momentum and growth. The rapid evolution of production methods and ways of living require more and more adaptability and innovation. Anticipating and stimulating change have become main factors effecting competitiveness, being an engine for change and effecting contemporary economies. Traditional disciplinary boundaries have been overwhelmed by the need for greater interaction, ability to work in groups and the transfer of technology. Designers are now required to know new design skills and ways of information sharing, as well as have improved ability to listen to the needs of clients. On the other hand, it provides designers with new opportunities to draw on the wealth of traditional knowledge but yet without formal conditions or style obligations. Even when applied to interior architecture, the designer must be able to make use of new skills to delineate separated professions, those typical of the architecture. The way of selling ‘sales’ has changed mainly because of the dissemination of “online shopping” and effect of mass distribution. New forms of shared consumption have been established and commercial spaces now take on new forms and functions. As in many other fields, they are not uniform linear transformations but are rather coexisting contradictory phenomena in very distinct situations. Local businesses have survived mass distribution because ‘zero kilometer’ goods are displayed side by side with goods coming from other continents. Even the shop under your house is not immune to the online buying phenomenon. Each industry sector has developed a mix of technologies and processes that the designer must be able to know how to use and to which the project has to adapt to. The very concept of ownership and selling is being questioned in favor of other forms of access to goods and services. The ‘experience’ of a product remains fundamental, even when a sale is not ‘on the spot’, it has become even more important to transmit the intangible values, narrative and symbology associated with the goods. Creativity, when also applied to a complex issue like commercial spaces can sometimes be rendered in a software program to track a shipment as in an interface to manage to an online business application or an interactive information system, but in any case it must aim to take advantage of new knowledge/systems to improve the effectiveness of the process. MASTER OBJECTIVES There are 3 main objectives. To transmit elements characterizing the Italian "style" in interior design by analysing the works of the main twentieth century architects. To analyse framework elements also technological and cultural innovations that are profoundly changing the relationship between commodity and consumer. In this section beyond the evolution of consumption strategies,students will have in depth study of the relationship between a city as a whole and its commercial functions from urban,sociological and anthropological points of view. In this context, some lessons will be dedicated to the basic understanding of e-commerce given the network a natural extension of the commercial space even though not expressly covered in the domain of interior designers. European Urban Studies respond to the dynamic transformation processes which affect urban spaces at the beginning of the 21st century. Urban landscapes of dispersed character, global markets, virtual spaces, powerful actors in the construction business and postmodern lifestyles generate new challenges for the spatial competence of planners and spatially oriented designers.During the first and third semester, in-depth scientific and basic applied knowledge in the thematic context of "European Urban Studies" is conveyed. The study project in the first or third semester deals with a particular urban and/or spatially oriented issue. This issue is tackled using scientific and/or design-oriented methods in an interdisciplinary, yet applied manner close to reality. Hereby, applying the content and methodic core competence of all or as many as possible of the fields of European Urban Studies will be relevant. Courses and examinations are held in English.During the second semester, which is oriented towards professional practice, international partners in Germany, Europe and overseas offer collaboration on "International Model Projects". These internships (three to six months) are conducted with chosen project partners such as scientific institutions, communal authorities, real estate developers/investors, construction managers, architects and planning offices. The presentation and discussion of the results drawn from the research work and practical experience occurs in the third semester, following the internship during the annual Model Project Forum.In the fourth semester, students are expected to draw up their Master Thesis.
