The touch, the smell of things? The people…? Phenomenological aspects determine the atmosphere of an interior. The core Interior at our Master Interior Architecture is no niche, nuance or aspect of architecture, but a fundamental attitude towards the surrounding world. The core of this Master is the understanding of a place in all its manifestations, before you start to transform it because of changing needs and requirements. What will you learn? You will learn to develop a concept for a space based on your own ideas and artistic vision and realize that concept. Thesis and anatomical model Your graduation project consists of two connected layers: the thesis and the anatomical model. The MArch (Part 2) is a long-established and well-respected course that is prescribed by the ARB and validated by the RIBA to give exemption from the second stage of professional education. The emphasis of the course is on innovative design work, and on developing a caring and critical approach to the study and practice of architecture. The course fosters diversity of choice, interpretation and approach, whether in design projects or more academic research. The former focuses on sophisticated design programmes (in formal, technical, professional or urban terms) that demand rigour and self-criticism. The latter focuses on your major dissertation, an extended piece of specialised research into architecture and its historical or theoretical contexts. The course has three main objectives: to develop your design ability through project-based experimentation; to present an evaluation and critique of your coursework within a broad cultural context, and in light of technical, economic and legal constraints; and to promote the articulate explanation and representation of quality and value in design projects. Core modules DESIGN PROJECT 1 (YEAR 1 DESIGN STUDIO) This single design project, or series of linked design projects, is individual to each elective Design Studio, and is run in parallel with the Year 2 Design Studio. You choose your Design Studio following presentations by all the Design Studio tutors at the beginning of the academic year; each Design Studio offers a new project every year. Projects lead from exploratory research to the development of an individual brief, and a design proposal which you develop for assessment at the end of Semester One. HISTORY AND THEORY This module consists of specialist seminar study and a series of wider module-wide lectures, and begins a year-long study of architectural history and theory which culminates with your dissertation submission in Year 2. Following presentations by all the seminar group leaders at the beginning of the semester, you choose a seminar group with its own particular theme and programme of study. Based on this, you select an individual area of research, and develop it through writing and a presentation; you also prepare an abstract for your Dissertation. TECHNICAL STUDIES IN PRACTICE This module requires you, individually or within a group, to carry out research into different approaches to, and kinds of, technology and environmental design. You will need to look at the wider cultural issues involved, but more especially at issues of sustainability in design. This is expected to inform your Design Studio project work. DISSERTATION The Dissertation is the primary focus of Architectural History and Theory teaching, and the main written component of the course. Building on your abstract, you research into primary and secondary sources, define and refine a methodology, produce a draft synopsis, and, finally, complete a 10,000-word dissertation with footnotes, bibliography and illustrations. If you explore another mode of study, such as making a film or designing a website, you will still need to meet a lower word limit of 6,000 words. MAIN DESIGN PROJECT (YEAR 2 DESIGN STUDIO) As with Design Studio 1, this is individual to each elective Design Studio, and you choose your Design Studio following presentations by all the Design Studio tutors at the beginning of the academic year. The module is integrated with the subsequent Design Development module, and these two modules usually create a single overarching project for the final academic year. The modules is run in parallel with the Year 1 Design Studio, however, Year 2 students are expected to pursue, and resolve, a more ambitious and sophisticated thesis. APPLIED TECHNICAL STUDIES In this module you complete an applied technical study concurrent with the progression of your main Design Studio project. This integrated report explains and deepens the environmental, structural and constructional strategies inherent to your design thinking and your project. STRATEGIC REPORT This module is a substantial report that is integrated with your main Design Studio project, and the Applied Technical Studies modules. The report focuses on exploring and explaining the critical project decisions made as part of the design process. The module introduces you to various approaches to the report - methodologies, techniques, selected building precedents - through seminars and Design Studio group tutorials. Graduation Requirements To be awarded a Master's degree, a student must complete the required studies and Master's thesis and write a maturity essay demonstrating language proficiency (English). The diploma for the degree of Master of Science (Architecture) is awarded on request and issued by the Education Dean of the Faculty. Programme Admissions General Academic Requirements and Language Requirements General Academic Requirements and Language Requirements are the same for all of the Master's programmes offered by the University of Oulu. Application Documents Application documents for all master programmes are listed and described in detail on the Master's Programmes admissions web pages of the University of Oulu. Portfolio Digital portfolio is required to be submitted as a program specific application document for the Master’s Programme in Architecture. The portfolio must be sent electronically directly to the University of Oulu within the application period. Contents of the portfolio: The e-portfolio should present an illustrated documentation of the applicant’s preceding study of the Bachelor’s degree in architecture, including design projects from small to large scale. The material should be divided by study year and provided with an easily readable, short description of each assignment presented in the portfolio. Additional artistic work of the applicant (e.g. competition projects) may be presented in the portfolio with a written description of the content and the year of completion. Team projects, in which the applicant is one of the actual authors, may also be included. Any material that is not entirely the applicant’s own work must be clearly identified and the applicant’s own particular contribution to the project has to be described. Cover page is required and must include the applicant’s name and the UAF application number. Mark your name on each page of your portfolio. Form of the portfolio: The portfolio must be submitted as a single, multi-page PDF-file with all pages in horizontal (landscape) orientation, in either A4 or A3 size. The maximum number of pages is 20 and the maximum PDF-file size is 15 MB. The portfolio should be designed and formatted for on-screen viewing (avoid double-spread layout). Selection Process The admissions committee for the Master's Programme in Architecture will assess the students eligible for admission, based on their academic qualifications and the level of architectural design, working methods and presentation skills illustrated in the portfolio. The admission committee has at least five members, all qualified architects, teaching at the Oulu School of Architecture. N.B. All submitted documents will be examined for their eligibility and authenticity. In case the applicant submits forged documents, the application will be automatically rejected. Detailed Selection Criteria The selection of students is based on the level of the portfolio and the academic content and level of the applicant’s Bachelor’s degree. The main focus in the student selection is on the artistic level of the portfolio, reflecting the applicant’s ability to express him/her self in spatial and visual terms as well as ability to work in different scales, from large to the small. Programme Specific Academic Requirements Students who are on their last term/semester of Bachelor's studies can apply to study a Master's degree. Applicants with excellent academic records can be offered a conditional study placement. In these cases the applicant has to submit his/her Bachelor's degree documentation before receiving the final study placement offer. University of Oulu International Master’s Scholarship Scheme 2017-2018 Connected with the renewal of university strategy, the increased importance of internationalization and the introduction of tuition fees for non-EU/EEA citizens, the University of Oulu has assigned a significant amount of money for tuition scholarships for 2017 entry. The scholarships will be granted in the form of a tuition fee waiver. The tuition fee waiver awarded covers 100 % of the full tuition fee. Applicants can apply for the tuition scholarship as part of the admissions process. University of Oulu Scholarship Scheme in more detail The University of Oulu International Master’s Scholarship Scheme (IM Scholarship) provides scholarships to academically talented international students. The scholarship is aimed at students studying for a Master’s degree in the University of Oulu two-year International Master’s programmes. The scholarship covers the full international tuition fee. University of Oulu IM Scholarships do not cover living costs. In order to retain the scholarship in the following year of study, a student must have completed 55 ECTS by the end of the previous academic year. If a student does not achieve this requirement during the first year of studies, they will be liable to pay the full international tuition fee for the second year if they wish to complete their Master’s degree programme. An exception to this rule can be made if a student has been granted approved leave from studies (e.g. due to serious illness). Eligibility Requirements to Apply for International Master’s Scholarship Applicants are eligible to apply for a University of Oulu IM Scholarship 2017-18, if they are: Non-EU/EEA* citizens who do not have a permanent residence permit in Finland. (Applicants not eligible for the International Master’s Scholarship are: 1) non-EU/EEA citizens who have a permanent residence permit in Finland, 2) EU/EEA citizens or comparable persons, 3) University of Oulu students who have been accepted to study BEFORE the academic year 2017-18.) Eligible to apply for a Master’s degree programme at the University of Oulu for academic year 2017 – 18. The applicant has obtained their first academic degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent) from a recognised institution of higher education. The applicant proves a high level of proficiency in English language. Approved methods of demonstrating language proficiency. Applicants who are in their last term/semester of studies for their first academic degree during the application period, can apply for the scholarship. Applicants who receive a conditional offer of study placement for a Master’s programme will receive a conditional scholarship offer. A permanent residence permit bears the letter P or A and an EC residence permit for third-country nationals with long-term EC resident status bears the letters P-EY. Application for International Master’s Scholarship 2017-18 There is no separate application system for the International Master’s Scholarship. All applicants for University of Oulu Master’s degree programmes need to complete the Student Application Form. Those applicants who are applying for the University of Oulu International Master’s Scholarship have to additionally complete the “Application for Scholarship,” section which can be found at the end of the Student Application Form. The International Master’s Scholarship application section cannot be completed and/or submitted without the Student Application Form. All students choose a design unit within which to undertake their project work, each unit has a different specialism across the themes of; digital surrealism, film and animation, bio-technology, art practice and contemporary culture. The first year of the programme starts by developing advanced skills in urban design and digital representation that can be applied to a major building project in conjunction with a professionally mentored 'Design Realisation' technical report. The second year of study takes the aspirations of the students work to a higher level of professional and academic engagement with an integrated advanced architectural design project and a specialist theoretical and, or, technological thesis developed with respect to the students own interests and passions.
