Programme Description

Our Master of Science in Socio-Ecological Resilience for Sustainable Development will introduce you to the complexity of interactions between humans and nature. You will learn how to use resilience thinking as an approach to managing socio-ecological systems and to help you solve real-world problems.

Programme structure

Courses in the first year have their emphasis on resilience and reflect the challenges facing society and research at the Stockholm Resilience Centre. In the second year, you will gain practical research experience while conducting your degree project.

First year

  • Governance and Management of Social-Ecological Systems
  • Resilience Reflections and Applications

Second year

Degree project (60 credits)

Career prospects

The MSc program serves as good preparation for the continuation of Ph.D. studies within socio-ecological systems and sustainability. It opens up potential careers in governmental ministries and local administrative authorities, NGOs and research institutes, or working with indigenous rights. In the private sector, job possibilities exist in consulting agencies and established companies worldwide.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for the program we require the equivalent to Bachelor's degree and that you can show that you have background relevant to the subject either from studies or other experience. In addition, you are required to show English proficiency equivalent to the Swedish high school level.

Application and tuition fees are required unless you are EU/EEA citizen or have long-term/permanent residency status in Sweden (or temporary residency for reasons other than studies).
