Orchestra musicians have to meet both particular and complex demands regarding genre (Sinfonia, opera, operetta, musical etc.), cast and style of the works which will be performed (knowledge of interpretational characteristics ranging from Early Music to vanguard playing techniques of the newest compositions is expected). Therefore, it is necessary for the musician to possess a high artistic potential as well as the ability to work as part of an ensemble and to take up a subordinate role in a group (following a concertmaster, principal, conductor).
Instrumental excellence regarding playing techniques and interpretational skills is the fundamental prerequisite for a successful orchestra musician. Therefore, the Artistic Module (“Künstlerisches Kernmodul”, semesters 1–4) is the essential part of each semester. Ensemble playing from chamber music to an orchestra playing in different contexts (university orchestra, a practical period with a professional orchestra) is the pillar of the Key Module (“Schwerpunktmodul”, semesters 1–4). The core segment is supported by study fields such as audition training, concentration exercises and special playing techniques/secondary as well as historical instruments.
The Module Applied Music Theory and Musicology (“Angewandte Musiktheorie und Musikwissenschaft”, semesters 1–2) has been aligned with the core area of the course.
The Master’s course is characterized by its highly practical component which leads directly to the practical period in the second half of the study.
During the 3rd and the 4th semesters, students choose one module out of a module catalogue to either refine their artistic skills or to specialise.
APTITUDE TEST REQUIREMENTS
Aptitude test in main subject (supplement to the aptitude test regulations of Rostock College of Music and Drama)
- One etude or caprice of your choice (e.g. Dont op. 35, Vieuxtemps, Wieniawski op. 10, Paganini)
- A first movement (with cadenza) from a concerto by W. A. Mozart (KV 216, KV 218, KV 219)
- A movement from a romantic virtuoso concerto (e.g. Wienawski, Lalo, Mendelssohn, Saint-Saëns, Tchaikovsky etc.)
- 3rd and 4th movements from a violin sonata by J.S. Bach (G minor, A minor, C major)
Viola Same requirements as for the BACHELOR’S DEGREE COURSE (STRINGS), but at a more advanced level of difficulty:
- Scales and arpeggios through three octaves in any key; scales in thirds, sixths and octaves
- An etude by Kreutzer, Hoffmeister, Campagnoli
- Two contrasting movements from one of J.S. Bach’s 6 solo suites
- A movement from a Romantic sonata (e.g. Eccles, Schumann op. 113, Schubert, Brahms etc.)
- First movement of a classical concerto (e.g. E. Casadesus, C. F. Zelter, F. A. Hoffmeister, K. Stamitz etc.)
- Two contrasting movements from a solo sonata or partita by J.S. Bach
- 1st and 2nd movements from Haydn’s cello concerto in D major, op. 101
- 1st and 2nd movements from a Romantic or modern cello concerto
- A Caprice/Etude from Piatti or Popper (Advanced School of Cello Playing)
- A 20th-century work composed after 1960 (please bring score for the contemporary work)
- Recitative from Beethoven’s 9th Symphony
- An orchestral part of your choice
- Henry Eccles: Sonata, 1st and 2nd movements
- A fast movement from one of the following works: Koussevitzky, Bottesini or Dittersdorf concerto
- A work composed after 1950
