This course is designed for individuals with experience of music technology and related disciplines. You’ll explore the field in more depth, and broaden your experience in interdisciplinary and multimedia work.

Our staff and students have released numerous records (many as part of the Bristol underground bass scene), and have specialisms in audiovisual work, sound design, music for media, game audio, programming and lecturing (FE and HE).

We have outstanding facilities in this area, including two fully-fledged TV studios and post-production audio suites. You’ll also have access to our world-leading Seeing Sound Visual Music symposium.


The course is designed to be flexible and to work around your individual interests and needs. You may choose to focus purely on sound throughout the course or you can add in multimedia elements.

You’ll have a great deal of freedom to focus on the work you want to do. Even when you’re studying theory, you can focus on your own individual area of research, so you can research and contextualise your own area of practice. Some modules are optional, and in addition, there is a great deal of flexibility within the modules. For example, the Skills Portfolio module is made up of many sub-projects from which you choose a selection.

Course structure

Trimester 1

You’ll gain a grounding in creative sound and media technology. Following a structured teaching-led programme, we’ll furnish you with the practical and theoretical skills you’ll need to develop as the course progresses.

Trimester 2

In the second trimester, you’ll create a themed but creatively free portfolio. We’ll encourage you to collaborate with students on the Creative Sound and Media Technology course, with students taking our other MMus courses, or indeed with creative individuals outside of the course.

You’ll have the choice to attend a weekly seminar series in either electroacoustic composition techniques or visual music.

Trimester 3

You’ll complete a major project, during a dissertation-equivalent module. You can undertake your own programme of work (in any area you like) with close staff supervision. You’ll use the skills acquired in the first two trimesters to produce a substantial portfolio of practical creative work

You’ll work independently, focusing on your individual practice. You’ll receive one-to-one tutorial support at the beginning and end of the module and on request.

Most modules revolve around a weekly meeting for the full group. Group sessions are supplemented by individual tutorials – the Major Project (which runs over the summer) is entirely taught through tutorials.

You can choose to study this course by distance learning.


Distance learning

You can choose to study this Master’s degree through distance learning.

Combining regular personal tutorials with a range of online teaching and learning tools, the course combines personal and social contact with asynchronous videos etc. Group session content is largely presented through dedicated screencasts, and tutorials take place using video conferencing software.

You are encouraged to come along to visit us, although this is not compulsory.

Some graduates go onto further study and research at PhD level, and some go on to become lecturers in further and higher education.


You’ll need skills and talent in music and/or music technology. Generally, a base level of music technology skills (basic DAW/sequencer use) is desirable, but more advanced skills can be covered as part of the course.

We may accept you even if you don’t have basic technology skills if we feel skills in other areas of music making compensate. Many of our students come from music technology-based undergraduate courses, but we also accept students from other disciplines who have explored music technology in their own time.

We are also very interested in mature students and experienced practitioners who may wish to use the course for their professional development. Here we can occasionally take life experience in place of a first degree, but this is the exception rather than the rule.

Interview and portfolio guidance

You’ll need to produce a portfolio when you apply; this will greatly inform our decision process.

On the whole, we are looking for you to use technology as a creative tool, rather than just as a recording medium. For example, if your work is primarily acoustic, we’d be looking for you to have an approach that shows you’re able to transfer creativity into the technological arena.
