(Program jointly offered by Ghent University, KU Leuven)

The space sector is an important component of modern life, in terms of economic, societal, technological and scientific developments. This sector and its manifold applications help to sustain the prosperity of our society. Its future requires highly skilled experts with a broad interdisciplinary view. The development of innovative technologies is fostered by intense symbiosis between technological sectors and the challenges set by fundamental research in exact and biomedical sciences. The economic and societal valorisation of space technologies requires an efficient understanding between project developers and the economic sectors. The large scale of space projects imposes important constraints on their management. The international character of the space sector and of its broad applications, including the relevance of space for security and defense, implies a need for European and international legal and political measures.... Bodies of water, including oceans, large lakes, seas and estuaries, make up the largest part of the earth’s surface. Well above 70% of the earth’s surface consists of water, which is essential for all life. Humans extract both directly and indirectly a major part of their food from the seas, photosynthesis in the oceans is responsible for approximately half of the global oxygen production, the oceans continue to yield unknown life forms at an astonishing rate. In spite of the importance of the water bodies of this earth, much of them remains unknown. Course content

Best Master of Science Programs in Natural Sciences in Belgium.

Our society is facing a number of key challenges, such as the sustainable use and management of the natural resources of our planet (water, soil, mineral resources and energy), and the protection of our population and infrastructure against the natural hazards (earthquakes, volcanic activity and climate change) that come with living on a dynamic planet.

For a geologist “global change” is a familiar topic, with a variety of facets. Our planet is an incredibly dynamic and perpetually changing system and unraveling it is one of the biggest challenges of the 21st century. To achieve this, a fundamental knowledge of the composition, structure, evolution and functioning of our planet is required.... [-]

Course content

We owe our current quality of life to developments in the exact sciences in general and more specifically to chemistry. Chemistry has had, and continues to have a major influence on numerous branches of Science, such as medicine, biology, agriculture and geology, but also connects to sciences such as physics and mathematics, establishing it as a truly central science. The impact of chemistry is omnipresent in industry: numerous areas of industry involve chemistry, including for example production, quality control but also product improvement and waste processing. Innovation and the development of new products and processes are simply not possible without a fundamental knowledge of chemistry. The structure of matter and insights into molecular processes and reactions contribute to scientific breakthroughs that will address current and future challenges.... [-]

Course content

Ghent University is the only university in Flanders to offer a Master of Science in Engineering Physics. Alumni of this master has solid physical know-how and the necessary skills to have a leading role in groundbreaking physics research. At the same time, they have the engineering skills that make them wanted as innovators and developers in the industry, research institutes, and universities. The engineering component of the master’s program develops skills such as analysis, design and optimization of existing and new systems, products, machines, and materials. This involves approximating physical reality by system descriptions ranging from simple rules of thumb to expert systems. The physical component follows a reductionist approach where experiment and mathematical modeling aim at understanding and reducing physics to its basics, and deriving its governing equations. Despite the more philosophical approach, a rigorous attitude remains essential and all physical theory has to withstand experimental validation.... [-]
