Digital Humanities is a young field of research, focused on the use of computational techniques to support research in the Humanities, Social and Behavioral Sciences. One of the key drivers of the field is the recent availability of large digital repositories within many areas of the Humanities, Social and Behavioral Sciences. These repositories offer the prospect of applying computational visualization, querying and analysis techniques, leading to the discovery of new knowledge and insights. The field also applies new digital techniques to enhance approaches, processes, skills, and methods developed and applied in the Humanities, Social and Behavioral Sciences. This includes the use of digital techniques in instructional sciences, the use of digital games in social sciences or the use of digital techniques in online publishing.... [-]

Course content

Increasing computer power and the professional need to extract objective information from collected data have led to complex databases. Simultaneously, statistical science has become a large discipline with well-developed methods and techniques for a wide range of data structures. Knowledge obtained from correctly analysed data allows to predict, adjust and even optimize processes based on empirical evidence. On the other hand, inefficient or incorrect data collection and analysis can lead to inferior or misleading conclusions with possibly far-reaching consequences.

Therefore, international professional and research standards in various fields demand high quality data analysis, performed by qualified statisticians. This program offers intensive training in modern statistical methods and data analysis to scientists from a variety of fields including biology, bio-informatics, economy and marketing, environmental and life sciences, engineering, mathematics and physics, psychology and social sciences …The program aims at improving problem solving skills and evidence based decision making. This will enable scientists to play a distinctly important role within their field of expertise. Course structure ... [-]

Course content

The global demand for plant-derived products such as feed and food is increasing dramatically, as illustrated by the recent doubling of the price of most commodity crops. How can we deal with these exponentially growing demands for food, feed, and bio-energy? How can we cope with the fact that we will have to produce more food on less arable land, under environmentally more challenging conditions? These are just a few questions to be solved by the modern plant biotechnology.

The training in plant biotechnology is embedded in an environment of top science and industrial entrepreneurship where translational research enables the transfer of knowledge from plant models to crops. If you choose to study at Ghent University, you will be studying at the largest Agro-Biotech Campus in Europe.... [-]

Bodies of water, including oceans, large lakes, seas and estuaries, make up the largest part of the earth’s surface. Well above 70% of the earth’s surface consists of water, which is essential for all life. Humans extract both directly and indirectly a major part of their food from the seas, photosynthesis in the oceans is responsible for approximately half of the global oxygen production, the oceans continue to yield unknown life forms at an astonishing rate. In spite of the importance of the water bodies of this earth, much of them remains unknown. Course content

The two-year program Master of Science in Marine and Lacustrine Science and Management (Oceans & Lakes) addresses students with a background in sciences. Oceans & Lakes is an interuniversity program jointly offered by Ghent University, University of Antwerp and Vrije Universiteit Brussel. It provides students with a strong fundamental and applied knowledge and prepares them for an active role in the scientific research and management of marine and lacustrine systems.... [-]

Top MScs in the Flanders in Belgium.

Our society is facing a number of key challenges, such as the sustainable use and management of the natural resources of our planet (water, soil, mineral resources and energy), and the protection of our population and infrastructure against the natural hazards (earthquakes, volcanic activity and climate change) that come with living on a dynamic planet.

For a geologist “global change” is a familiar topic, with a variety of facets. Our planet is an incredibly dynamic and perpetually changing system and unraveling it is one of the biggest challenges of the 21st century. To achieve this, a fundamental knowledge of the composition, structure, evolution and functioning of our planet is required.... [-]

Course content

We owe our current quality of life to developments in the exact sciences in general and more specifically to chemistry. Chemistry has had, and continues to have a major influence on numerous branches of Science, such as medicine, biology, agriculture and geology, but also connects to sciences such as physics and mathematics, establishing it as a truly central science. The impact of chemistry is omnipresent in industry: numerous areas of industry involve chemistry, including for example production, quality control but also product improvement and waste processing. Innovation and the development of new products and processes are simply not possible without a fundamental knowledge of chemistry. The structure of matter and insights into molecular processes and reactions contribute to scientific breakthroughs that will address current and future challenges.... [-]

Course content

Nematodes or roundworms are everywhere. They are among the most harmful organisms of crops, especially in the tropics, but on the other hand, some species are natural antagonists that can be used in bio-control programs against pest insects. Because of their ubiquitous presence, overwhelming densities and diversity (sometimes compared to insects) the free-living nematodes are an ideal tool for biodiversity studies. They are used as bioindicators of pollution in both terrestrial and aquatic environments.

Course structure

The first master year consists of 60 credits compulsory courses of which the first semester are basic nematology courses aimed at bringing all students to the same level. The second semester is more specialised and applied.... [-]
