Agro- and Ecosystems Engineering is about ensuring the prosperity and well-being of current and future generations in both the global North and global South. Agro- and ecosystems provide a wide range of essential goods and services such as food, water, energy, and biodiversity. Yet, the contemporary context of population growth, rapid urbanization, economic globalization, climate change, deforestation, soil pollution and degradation challenges the future provisioning of a sufficient quantity and quality of these goods and services.
What is the Master of Agro- and Ecosystems Engineering all about?
The Master of Agro- and Ecosystems Engineering (ACE) provides in-depth knowledge of the functioning and management of natural and production-oriented ecosystems. You can choose to focus on either temperate or (sub)tropical settings, or a combination of both. You compliment the interdisciplinary core programme with a major specialization in one out of four different domains: biological production, abiotic and biotic environment, bioeconomics, and bio-geo information....

How can forests help us fight climate change?
Do you want to affect the future of forests, a key natural resource and wellspring of biodiversity? Have you ever wondered why forests are called the lungs of the Earth and how climate change relates to forests? Or how trees are grown and processed into products in a sustainable and efficient manner? And how are the economy and forests interrelated? You can find answers to these questions when you study forest sciences. You will come to view forests not only as a setting for jogging trails or as a source of wood, but rather as a source of versatile renewable resources and as complex ecological systems that are closely connected to their environment. The relationship between humans and nature and between society and natural resources is a strong feature of these studies. The Master's Programme in Forest Sciences at the University of Helsinki has been ranked 4th in the world, placing it as one of the best educational programmes in Finland....

With an MSc in Aquatic Science and Technology, you can contribute to sustainable harvest and production of fish and shell-fish, assessment and management of human impact and environmental change as well as cutting-edge research on aquatic ecosystems, traits of their inhabitants, and their impact on global climate.
Two-thirds of the Earth’s surface is covered by water, and the seas, lakes, and streams have a crucial role to play in regulating our planet’s biogeography and climate—and in maintaining biodiversity. Moreover, a large part of the global population is dependent on fisheries and aquaculture as a source of food or income, and ‘blue growth’ features high on the EU’s political agenda....

MSc in Agro-Environmental Management
Developing sustainable agroecosystems
Students in the Agro-Environmental Management programme are out to change the world. Rather than just making minor changes to existing production systems, these students are out to rethink the entire production cycle by optimising production goals as well as environmental targets. They seek to develop sustainable pathways for every level of food production, to use new technologies to comply with an increased regulation, and to eliminate waste from the entire production cycle. This approach is not about maximising production – it’s about balancing production with environmental concerns.
Courses provide a strong theoretical background in subjects such as the management of border systems and the workings of the nutrient cycle. In the second year, students will have the opportunity to apply this knowledge to their thesis project....
