MSc in International Transport
The MSc in International Transport is a business-oriented degree for those in, or wishing to enter, the international shipping, transport and logistics sectors.
Cardiff Business School has over 40 years of experience of researching and teaching international transport, and the programme has a very good reputation in the industry. Today’s transport industry needs well-educated and adaptable managers at all levels, whether at policymaking or operational levels.
Transport is essential to every society and accounts for a significant proportion of the cost of most activities. It is a large and complex industry, which includes a wide diversity of firms and organisations in the shipping ports and logistics sectors, as well as supply chains and support services. It is an industry at the forefront of technological development. It provides new business opportunities in the areas of logistics and e-commerce.
About the MSc in International Transport programme
The study of shipping, transport and logistics explores issues ranging from the management of local transport operations and individual enterprises to the provision of global transport infrastructure and its impact on the environment.
The programme develops students' capacity to make an effective contribution at the highest level to the planning and management of international transport undertakings. It is particularly suitable for those who are, or intend to be, managers in firms involved in transport/shipping operations, or in a central government position.
The programme of study for each student is selected from a wide range of options, so that a programme can be tailored to previous or current work experience, or may be designed to widen the student’s range of expertise.

Programme Structure
Between September and June, in Semesters 1 and 2, you will undertake the taught component of the programme.
During this period, you will attend lectures and tutorials coupled with directed reading and, in some modules, case study exercises. Students must achieve a satisfactory standard of assessed work and examinations covering the taught component.
Students must undertake one compulsory module:
- International Transport Operations
Plus three optional modules from:
- E-Commerce and Information Technology
- International Logistics
- International Trade and Transportation Law
- International Transport and Sustainable Business
- Law of Carriage of Goods by Sea
- Logistics Modelling
- Port Policy and Management
- Shipping Economics
- Strategic Supply Chain Management
Students then undertake a dissertation between June – September.
Assessment
Teaching on this programme embraces a range of methods including traditional class work, group seminars, interactive problem-solving and continuous assessment. In the first stage taught component, assessment involves examinations, essays and project work.
Students who are successful in the taught component proceed to stage two of the programme and prepare a dissertation, due for submission in September. Candidates who achieve an appropriately high standard in the examination and dissertation stages are eligible for the award of the degree with distinction and merit.
