MSc Food Safety and Quality Management
The MSc Food Safety and Quality Management has been designed for professionals working in the food chain. This programme has been designed to provide graduates with an insight into measures that are required to provide a supply of safe and wholesome food to consumers globally. A wide spectrum of food safety and quality management issues are addressed following the farm to fork approach. Topics covered include: good governance and national control systems, food inspection and testing services, legislation and private standards, management of food safety and quality within the supply chain as well as in hotels and restaurants. Students will gain an understanding of safety and spoilage characteristics of a range of commodities/food products. As well as an understanding of the design and implementation of Food Safety Management Systems based upon the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point Concept (HACCP). The MSc FS&QM by Research is available for students with the appropriate background.
The MSc Food Safety and Quality Management (Control Systems and Trade) specialises in activities linked to good governance, food inspection and testing along the supply chain and is available for students working or would want to work in this area. The route forms part of the named award on successful completion of the programme.
The MSc Food Safety and Quality Management (Postharvest Technology) allows specialisation in the technology of handling plant products and is available for students with the appropriate background as a specialist route. The route forms part of the named award on successful completion of the programme.
The MSc Food Safety and Quality Management (by Research) is also available for students with the appropriate background and interest in research, fulfilling the requirements for the degree by undertaking an extended research project and a limited number of taught courses.

The programmes are focussed on issues that affect the food industry globally. The international market place requires that food is safe and wholesome for local consumption as well as international trade. The programme has been designed to summarise the main hazards associated with food and commodities and for students to understand and become competence working with the tools that can be used to ensure that consumers only eat food that is safe and wholesome.
Professional development for government officials, environmental health officers, those employed in the food industry such as food technologists, postharvest technologists handling and storing agricultural crops, food chemists or food microbiologists and laboratory staff.
