Overview

This Master's in Art and Design offers you the flexibility to shape your learning in support of a major independent project that you have conceived and planned.

The course is intended to support you to become a practitioner, able to strategise and lead within a creative industries context.

The bi-weekly MRes forum brings together staff and students from across the School to hear from visiting practitioners and discuss themes pertinent to your research.

Course structure

The course begins with interdisciplinary research designed to build your understanding of the approaches that are relevant to your ambitions. This is intended to support you throughout your studies and into work or further research.

You'll plan, experiment and take risks in ways that support development towards your major independent project. Depending on your particular interests, you'll draw on teaching and learning from Master's courses in the School of Art and Design - including Ceramics, Curatorial Practice, Fashion and Textiles, Fine Art and Visual Communication - thereby introducing you to students and staff from across the School.

The independent Master's Project offers you the opportunity to address a complex research task systematically and comprehensively through to completion, working to industry-informed standards and making use of the plans that you developed earlier in the programme.

How will I be assessed?

We employ a variety of exercises to test your developing skills. These range from exhibitions of your project work through to oral presentations and essays.

How will I be taught?

A series of lectures, talks and discussions will introduce and engage with ideas of research. You'll also have the opportunity to learn in a range of ways, for example through group and individual tutorials, group critique, self-directed research, specialist workshops and seminars, reading groups, study visits and our visiting and staff lectures programme.

Opportunities

Research

Research in Art and Design takes many forms, from theory-based dissertations through to practice-based outcomes such as exhibitions, moving image, and performance.

We're here to help you realise your ambitions and to support your planning towards an outcome that best matches your goals, be they further research toward doctoral study, a career in industry, or work as a self-employed artist, craftsperson, designer or curator.

You'll have access to an array of research-active staff in areas as diverse as fine art, ceramics, graphic communication, illustration, fashion, textile design, curatorial practice, and the history and theory of art and design.

Our School evolves constantly, and we have exciting plans for new areas of practice-based research, including drawing and interior design.

Field trips

We have formal links with institutions overseas and you’ll have opportunities to participate in a range of UK and international field trips (depending on the modules you choose). Please note that you may have to pay for some of these optional study visits.
