With two distinctive but interrelated pathways MA Fashion Cultures is a theoretically based course that explores fashion and dress within its historical, social and cultural contexts. On the History and Culture pathway you will investigate fashion as object, representation and practice through an interdisciplinary approach from both historical and contemporary perspectives. On Fashion/Film you will investigate the on-going changing relationship between fashion, costume and forms of film as well as the relationship between cinema and consumption within a global context. The Fashion/Film unit offers students from a fashion background the opportunity to learn more about the history of cinema and the critical theories deployed within film studies. Students whose first degree is in cinema or media studies will be provided with the chance to learn about the history of fashion, its emergence as an academic discipline and the different theoretical approaches now utilised within the field. Students who wish to make films when appropriate to the unit will be supported with the necessary skills and facilities. LCF provides workshops, lectures and seminars on filmmaking that will support students wishing to undertake this opportunity. Studio space and technician support is also available to support film making. This is offered to students with existing experience and to those new to this field. While you will choose one pathway, you will have the opportunity to attend the lectures for the other pathway if you wish to, so you can gain the fullest possible understanding of a variety of disciplines and their impact upon visual and material cultures. You will enrol onto your chosen pathway as decided at your interview and will exit with the appropriate pathway award.

Through photographic practice, you will examine social, cultural and critical issues involved in the practice of fashion photography and the impact and construction of the fashion image as a spectacle.

MA Design (Ceramics); MA Design (Furniture); MA Design (Jewellery) will develop your creative abilities, imagination and expertise. It offers three pathways: Ceramics, Furniture and Jewellery. These disciplines all have a rich tradition in material-led creativity. Framed within one course, we explore the evolving boundaries of these disciplines, embracing ideas of practice beyond traditional definitions. This allows a range of hybrid practices to emerge, disrupting assumptions around design, craft and manufacture. The course focuses on design as a process and as a practice. We look at design as modes of thinking, as ways of communicating to audiences and systems of engagement with the materiality of the world. These factors will impact the way your ceramics, furniture or jewellery design work will be realised. It will influence how you design it, talk about it, debate it and how you write about it. We are interested in all forms of manufacturing – from master craftsmanship, artisan work and the hand-made to factory production and emerging technologies. Our students are interested in single artefacts, mass-market delivery and all stages in-between.

Beyond the understanding of performance and the role of character creation through costume, the study of Costume Design at MA level allows you to locate your practice within the wider realms of contemporary culture and art, as well as within the relevant dramatic, social and political contexts.

In MA Fashion Futures, a groundbreaking course, you are encouraged to explore and develop speculative fashion practice and theoretical perspectives in parallel.

MA Fashion Retail Management is adynamic and academically rigorous course. It is designed toequip students withessential retail management knowledge,international retailingexpertise,brand development and creativedirection skills demanded by fashion retailers operating in an increasingly competitiveand global environment. Youare encouraged to critically develop independent, inquiring and creative approaches to increasingly complexfashion retailing challenges. You will beable to analyse relevantacademic theories and apply them toreal fashion retail situations. You will be able tocombine cutting-edge approaches in retail formats andbrand management to develop appropriate solutions for fashion retail environments. You will have the knowledge to critically evaluate the retail business environment, and criticise retail growth strategies and operations. You will examine and explore the concept of customer experience with experiential and sensory design from real to virtual situations. Your creativeapproach will beutilised toexplore the convergence of thephysical and virtual store inboth visual and strategic forms. Students will have the choice of two pathway options to focus their interests: Creative Pattern Cutting or Garment Technology.You will experiment with a range of digital and manufacturing technologies and techniques, materials and components in order to achieve your goals. As well as developing conventional and creative pattern cutting techniques, you will become conversant with digital pattern technology and you will explore digital pattern development through using 3D sampling software.
