MA TESOL

One of the UK’s most respected TESOL programmes, in one of the biggest TESOL departments, the programme has helped students develop their professional careers for nearly three decades.

MA TESOL is a one year full-time, or two years part-time, programme for experienced TESOL professionals, such as teachers, teacher trainers, language school directors, curriculum developers, inspectors, lecturers and materials writers.

Most students leave the course feeling professionally confident and competent, and many are able to find more responsible, higher status work with their MA qualification.

Why study with us?

The MA TESOL offers a comprehensive programme of academic and professional development. Because we’re a large department we can provide a particularly wide range of courses, and our staff have experience of working in many different global TESOL contexts. We’re also known for our excellent academic and social support, which means students can quickly settle into life in Leeds, feel part of a welcoming, lively learning community, and form lasting friendships with colleagues from around the world.

The programme effectively has three parts: in Semester 1, students study two core modules, while also doing a practice assignment, academic skills training, and taking part in a weekly TESOL forum with all other TESOL students. In Semester 2, students do various optional modules and also study research methods. From June to August, students will be mainly working on their dissertation (critical study) with the support of a tutor; this is usually a research project on a topic of particular interest.

During term time, students have 8-10 hours of class time and will be expected to work independently outside class, either alone or in study groups. Most modules are assessed through written assignments, which students choose from a range of topics. Staff will comment on drafts and offer other kinds of support during the process of assignment writing, and act as supervisors for students’ dissertations within their area of expertise. In this way, students can make dramatic improvements in their academic performance over the year.
