Programme Description

Course details

Build your practical and theoretical experience in the creative and innovative applications of music technology in a studio environment. This course will give you the skills to take your ambition further and provide you with the confidence to work for major record labels and recording artists across a range of genres.

You will work alongside experienced industry professionals, exploring the technical and creative aspects of recording, arranging, mixing and mastering to develop a wide range of commercial and non-commercial musical scores.

You will have access to a suite of high-quality, professional music studios approved by JAMES, the accrediting body of the Music Producers Guild and the Association of Professional Recording Services.

In addition to a skilled and experienced teaching team, you will also learn from guest speakers from the music, film and television industries. We have fantastic links with local and national music, arts and festival organisations, which will provide a variety of opportunities to test your knowledge and practical skills.

Artist in Residence Programme

The Artist in Residence programme gives our students an opportunity to work with professional artists and gives them a taste of what is it like to work on a professional music project. So far we have welcomed artists Chris T-T, Ian Prowse, I Monster, Tom Williams and Utah Saints.

Entry requirements

Requirements:Applicants should either have at least a second class honours degree in the cognate subjects of Music, Music Production or Audio Technology, at least a second class honours degree in a non-cognate subject supported by evidence of an aptitude for the subject applied for, or have equivalent experience or training, normally from within the work environment. All applications should be supported by a reference, either academic or professional. All applicants should satisfy our University English language requirements.

IELTS:

IELTS 6.0 with no skills below 5.5, or an equivalent qualification. The University provides excellent support for any applicant who may be required to undertake additional English language courses.

MATURE APPLICANTS

Our University welcomes applications from mature applicants who demonstrate academic potential. We usually require some evidence of recent academic study, for example, completion of an access course, however recent relevant work experience may also be considered. Please note that for some of our professional courses all applicants will need to meet the specified entry criteria and in these cases work experience cannot be considered in lieu.

Please note that all applicants to our University are required to meet our standard English language requirement of GCSE grade C or equivalent, variations to this will be listed on the individual course entry requirements.

Fees & funding

UK & EU

The tuition fee for the year for students is £6500. The amount you will pay may increase each year to take into account the effects of inflation.

International

The tuition fee for the year for students is £11500. The amount you will pay is fixed at this level for each year of your course.

Music Studios

Write, mix, produce and record your own music in our state-of-the-art studios. You will be following in the footsteps of BRIT Award-winning musicians Piers Aggett and Kesi Dryden, of Rudimental, who both studied at the University.

Headingley Campus

Our historic Headingley Campus is set in 100 acres of parkland with easy access to Leeds city centre.

Library

Our Library is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, every day of the year, providing you with access to specialist books and journals, learning spaces, computers, multimedia facilities and media equipment hire. Tens of thousands of our Library's digital resources, including ebooks, ejournals and databases, can be accessed online at a time and place to suit you.
