Programme outline
Starting in 2018, our MA Historical Research & Public History is a one-year programme of study or can be studied part-time across two years. International students who require a visa are only eligible to study this programme on a one-year, full-time basis.
Each of the programmeâs seven courses has been developed by award-winning academic, historian and broadcaster Dr Suzannah Lipscomb and will be delivered by the History Faculty at NCH.
- Course 1: The Historianâs Craft
- Course 2: Depth Study I*
- Course 3: Public History
- Course 4: Depth Study II*
- Course 5: Dissertation I
- Course 6: Applied Public History
- Course 7: Dissertation II
* Depth Studies are chosen from:
- The Royal Court: Ritual, Culture & Power in Medieval England, 1150-1300
- Cross-Cultural Encounters in the Early Modern World
- The Later Victorian Age: Society & Culture, 1870-1900
- African Americans & Economic Inequality from Civil War to Civil Rights

Your qualifications:
New College of the Humanitiesâ degrees has been designed and created by the Collegeâs world-class professors and faculty. The courses reflect their areas of expertise and research interests, meaning that they are strongly engaged with the material that they will teach you, and there may be opportunities for students to participate in active research.
In the case of the MA Historical Research & Public History programme, the curriculum has been overseen and developed by Dr Suzannah Lipscomb MA, MSt, DPhil (Oxon), FRHistS, Head of History Faculty & Senior Lecturer in Early Modern History. Depth Study topics have been devised and will be taught the members of the NCH History faculty including Dr Lars Kjaer BA, MPhil, PhD, Lecturer in Medieval History, Dr Edmund Neill MA, DPhil (Oxon), MSc (LSE), FRHistS, Lecturer in Modern History and Dr Olly Ayers BA (Manchester), PhD (Kent), Lecturer in History and Politics.
The New College of the Humanities MA Historical Research & Public History degree programme has been approved by Swansea University as being of an appropriate standard and quality and will lead to the Swansea University award of a Master of Arts (MA).
