Introduction
EXPLORE EUROPE’S HISTORY AND CULTURE IN A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE
We assign meaning to the world around us, identifying with certain forms of society, institutional practices, narrative constructions, and everyday habits. We call this process of assigning and deriving meaning 'identity formation'. Because identities are determined culturally and are continually changing, they have a history. Understanding that history is of vital importance in order for us to behave appropriately in today’s culturally diverse societies. In the Master’s programme in Cultural History, you will study Europe’s position in the world from a cultural historical perspective, with an emphasis on modern history. The programme offers you profound insight into the history of ideas and practices that form the identities of individuals, groups, and societies. International frameworks are increasingly important in this field and constitute one of the programme’s focal points.
English and Dutch tracks
In the English track, emphasis is placed on European and international cultural history themes. In the Dutch track, we will focus on the role of cultural history in the public domain. It is possible for you to combine courses from both tracks with permission from the Master’s coordinator.
Part-time
The part-time option allows you to complete the full-time programme over two years instead of one.
