From mobile phones to watches, media platforms, utility grids, and medical devices, connected objects are permeating all levels of industry and technology. As society becomes increasingly digitized, the data they generate enables new interactions and business models, with wide-reaching impacts on traditional economic systems and, even, social habits.
For 21st century companies, developing the strategies and skills required to make their products connected is imperative in order to avoid their own obsolescence. But how are those skills developed?
Whether a connected object is intended for mainstream consumption or a specific industry, companies face a wide range of questions beyond technical feasibility: what is the market potential for this object? Can it be assessed through Big Data analysis? Which selling price will ensure long-term profitability? What will be the costs of storing and analyzing the data generated by this object? How will this data be processed in compliance with the privacy and property laws of different countries and regions? What are the object’s potential impacts on its sociological and societal context? The success of a connected object depends on companies' ability to answer these questions right from the design stage.
The Internet of Things: Innovation and Management Programme (IoT-IM) Graduate Degree is based on the Ecole Polytechnique’s trademark multidisciplinary approach and provides you with the necessary knowledge and expertise of the entire connected objects’ ecosystem - from the electronics to economics of connected objects. It is a complete program for future entrepreneurs, engineers and IT/IoT consultants with a passion for the internet of things, and the curiosity to investigate the many sectors that overlap within the field.
Important: Previously entitled "Connected Objects for a Digitised Society (CO4DiS)", the program IoT-IM has been restructured in order to integrate more management component and broaden the scope of career outcomes. Please contact us if you have any questions about this change.
At École Polytechnique, we firmly believe that solid technical and scientific know-how must be complemented by a thorough understanding of the economic, regulatory and societal context, in order to form a complete and competent engineer. The Internet of Things: Innovation and Management Programme aims to provide such an understanding through the study of six thematic pillars and how they apply specifically to the world of connected objects:
- Electronics: objects, captors, sensors, and more
- Communications: connectivity, data transmission
- Software Systems: embedded systems, cloud and data exploitation
- Law & Regulation: intellectual property, individual rights & data protection
- Management & Economics: monetization of data, business models, Innovation and entrepreneurship, Strategy, Project management
- Society & Sociology: behavioral interaction, social changes
The coursework of your degree will allow you to study with faculty members and work in the very laboratories where several of the communication protocols used for smart grids and software systems were invented. Co-tutoring opportunities will be available with our valued research and industrial partners, including EDF R&D and Cisco Systems, the latter of which also sponsors the École Polytechnique “Internet of Things” Chair.
The IoT-IM Programme offers two tracks: Entrepreneurship Track and Strategic Management Track.
Both tracks include a Graduate Project, undertaken in small groups, parallel to your coursework. The projects are performed under the supervision of a dedicated tutor, who will be able to provide guidance and advice as well as ensuring you benefit from his or her professional and academic network. According to the track that you choose, two options are offered:
- Entrepreneurship Project: You and your team will manage all the steps in the connected objects development process, from ideation to design to prototyping and pitching the finished product. Your project may be based on your team’s own creative ideas or from an area of interest suggested by one of our academic or industrial partners. This two-year long graduate project will culminate in an academic defence in the form of a pitch and product launch.
- Strategic Management Project: During the first year, you and your team will work on a topic proposed by partner companies of École Polytechnique and addressing real IoT issues from and for real clients. You will be asked to assist the company in solving complex challenges and deliver strategic recommendations. You are also required to undertake a four to a six-month work placement at a company in France or abroad, in the first and the second year.
Through our institution’s extensive network, additional insight will be gained from our series of Master Classes which invite leading industry, academic and regulatory figures to the campus to share their strategic vision through human-scale talks and conferences.

II. Master Classes
The pedagogical objective of the Master Classes is to offer an in-depth exposure to specialized topics, typically with an industrial and/or applied angle, or to topics which are novel and innovative, and not covered in any of the regular academic courses. Master Classes are intensive seminars, affording students the ability to balance their academic learning with best-practices from engineers in professional exercise, or affording students the ability to confront themselves with the frontiers of scientific research. Students must validate the Master Classes by the presence (mandatory) and by participation.

III. The Graduate Project - Entrepreneurship Track
The pedagogical objective of the Graduate Project is for students to document acquired skills in the application of scientific and technological tools, theories, and methods, in a development project relevant to the overall thematics of the program Internet of Things.
The Graduate Project is undertaken in a small group of 2-3 students.
During the Graduate Project, the students are to demonstrate and ultimately document in their Graduate Thesis, the ability to:
- Work in a small, technical, team, on developing a Connected Object, including the environment (back-end, data analysis, economic model, ...):
- Perform a bibliographic survey and identify relevant reference materials
- Develop a coherent and relevant problem statement
- Develop, and execute, a project plan
- Develop, and execute, a test plan
- Produce a working prototype, and a convincing demonstration hereof
- Analyze the societal, ecological, and economical, impact and viability, of their "Connected Object".
- Document and present, clearly and pedagogically, the result of their work, as well as underlying analysis, in a Graduate Thesis.
The Graduate Project formally commences 4 weeks after the start of the first academic year. During those 4 weeks, the student group will be formed, and work together to develop a Graduate Project Synopsis. During these 4 weeks, the group will also be associated with a main academic advisor, who will follow the Graduate Project for its entire duration.
The main academic advisor meets regularly with the students to suggest directions, assist in developing a scientific and engineering strategy, assist in identifying and reaching out to external expertise, as needed, and offer continuous critical reviews of their work as it progresses.

The structure of the IoT-IM Graduate Degree has been designed to provide students with an optimal professional environment, ensuring you graduate from the program ready to launch your career in the world of connected objects.
For students choosing the Entrepreneurship Track, you will be an ideal candidate to join the latest IoT startup or leading technology company as soon as your degree is completed. As the degree’s Graduate Projects prepare you for every step in the creation of a new connected object, you will also be ready to launch your own startup.
For students opting for the Strategic Management Track, IT/IoT consultant is an obvious choice as the first career step. You may also join digital divisions of multinational companies. The Company Project, as well as the internships that you will undertake, will give you many opportunities to build your own professional network.
As you know, real expertise in connected objects is increasingly in demand with industry players large and small and wherever large-scale networks exist. French energy provider EDF, for example, is the world’s largest internet service provider (ISP), which may come as a surprise. However, through its subsidiary ERDF, a smart grid operator, it manages the world’s no.1 IPv6 network which pilots their smart grid.
The infrastructure industry’s use of connected objects has enabled it to stay at the forefront of smart grid management, while also inspiring its fair share of startups. Cisco Systems, a close partner of École Polytechnique and supporter of our research, holds a 30% share in the global router market and is heavily involved in the development of the connected objects sector.
Our location in the Paris-Saclay research and business cluster has developed a number of high-value partnerships with international companies which provide excellent opportunities for graduates. Application requirements and deadlines
Applicants must hold or expect to hold a Bachelor's degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics, or «Diplôme d’ingénieur» prior to the beginning of the program.
English Language requirements
Applicants must demonstrate full English-language proficiency. The tests that we accept are the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), the Internet-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL ibt) and the following Cambridge General English Tests: First (FCE), Advanced (CAE) and Proficiency (CPE).
The minimum scores required are:
- TOEFL IBT 90
- IELTS 6.5
- Cambridge Test - First (FCE) Grade B - 176
Scores must date no earlier than two years prior to the start of the program.
List of supporting documents needed
No paper copies are needed for the admission review process. If you are admitted, you may be required to submit official or certified hard copies before the start of the program. Supporting documents include:
- Scanned copies of transcripts of all previous post-secondary education (including exchange programmes and programmes you did not complete)
- Official document or letter from your university explaining the grading and ranking system
- For completed programs: scanned copies of degrees
- For programs still in progress: certificate of enrolment by your home university stating the title of the expected degree and date of completion. This document must prove that you are at least in your final year of undergraduate studies.
- Personal Statement. Minimum: approx. 700 words, in French or English. Please use the form provided in the online application system.
- Contact details for two referees (Names, positions & emails). A letter of recommendation form will be sent directly to them.
- CV or resume, without any biographical gaps, maximum: 2 pages, in French or English;
- Copy of passport (or ID card for European students)
- Copy of TOEFL/IELTS (taken less than 2 years before)
Tuition fees are €12,000 per academic year.
Please note that registration with a health insurance scheme is compulsory in France when you enrol at a Higher Education Institution.
If you come from any of the 28 EU countries, Iceland, Lichtenstein, Norway or Switzerland and are already registered with a national health insurance provider, you must apply for the European health insurance card. This card is free and will give you access to state-provided healthcare during your stay in France under the same conditions and at the same cost as nationals.
Students from Quebec are exempt from joining the French Student Social Security upon presentation of Form #SE401Q106.
Room & Board
Ecole Polytechnique is pleased to provide accommodation on campus for all graduate degree students given that they request it within the timeframe.
The rent is 617 euros per month (including housing insurance). You will also be required to pay a security deposit of 617 euros upon arrival. All residences are equipped with a shared-kitchen but you may also have your breakfast, lunch, and dinner at our university restaurant from Monday to Saturday. A lunch meal costs approximately 2 to 4 euros thanks to our student discount rate. Monthly expenses for meals usually range from 200 to 350 euros.
Students receive assistance from the Housing Office to apply for the French National Housing Benefit "CAF". Students usually obtain a financial aid of 150-200 euros per month.
All our students receive the ISIC card (International Student Identity Card) automatically and for free. They gain preferential and discounted access to over 150,000 products, services, and experiences relevant to all aspects of student life.
Additional scholarship opportunities can be found at CampusFrance website (e.g. French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development for international students). Please note that the French scholarship "CROUS" is not compatible with our degree.
