The international Master of Arts MIREES is a Second cycle Joint Degree (120 ECTS), awarded by the School of Political Sciences-Forlì Campus in cooperation with the following partner universities: Vytautas Magnus University at Kaunas and Saint-Petersburg State University.

MIREES is an innovative joint master’s Programme, taught entirely in English, devoted to students who have a BA background in Economics, Politics, International Relations, History, Languages or Cultural Studies at large and would now like to acquire an in-depth knowledge of Postsocialist countries in transitions, the new EU member states after the Enlargements Eastwards of 2004 - 2014, as well as the New East-European Neighbour Countries.

MIREES awards a joint diploma issued by the University of Bologna, Vytautas Magnus University of Kaunas and St.Petersburg State University. The Universities of Ljubljana, Zagreb, Comenius, and Corvinus are special partners welcoming mobility students and participating in teaching activities.

MIREES combines an academic approach with professional training, forging potential insightful consultants, analysts, and managers as Area Experts for international agencies, public administrations, private and public companies, and NGOs, while also offering a solid basis for further academic studies at the Ph.D. level.

Admission requirements

In order to be accepted to the MIREES program, applicants must possess:

  1. First Cycle Degree or any equivalent title obtained abroad, legally recognized, in one of the following fields of study: economics, political science, sociology, political geography, demography, gender studies, anthropology, history, philosophy, literature, language studies, cultural studies;
  2. Knowledge of the English language at a minimum of B2 Level, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, attested by one of the following certificates issued no more than 3 years prior to the application deadlines: TOEFL - computer-based – of at least 213 points; TOEFL - paper-based - of at least 550 points; TOEFL - Internet-based – of at least 80 points; IELTS - of at least 6.0 points; FCE – B; Trinity ISE II ; a B2 level certificate in English released by a University Language Centre. The above-mentioned certificates are not requested if the candidate is an English mother-tongue or has obtained a First-Cycle Degree awarded by an English-speaking university or entirely taught in English.
  3. Assessment of a suitable personal preparation in at least one of the following disciplinary fields: Law, Economics, Political Science, Sociology, Political Geography, Demography, Gender Studies, Anthropology, History, Philosophy, Literature, Language Studies, Cultural studies, at European and international level, and also in recent political and economic events in the European and international contexts, usually provided by a First Cycle Degree (BA).

The assessment is carried out on the basis of the documents submitted by the candidates and specified in the call for applications.

Programme profile

MIREES main characteristics are based on

  • an international Faculty (provided by the partnership);
  • an international students' environment (provided by an internationally wide students' enrollment);
  • a compulsory students' mobility within the partnership;
  • a strong research component;
  • language skills;
  • interdisciplinarity;
  • a wide and intensive methodology aimed to encourage active participation and to provide organizational, analytical, multifunctional, cross-cultural mindset skills and empathy towards the geopolitical Area of specialization.

The program lasts two years and is divided into four semesters. The first and second semester take place at the University of Bologna, Forlì Campus.

During the third semester, students carry out a compulsory mobility of at least 5 months at one of the partner or associate universities. The mobility is an integral part of the student teaching program and is aimed at carrying out educational activities in order to fulfil the required number of University credits as well as the research activities related to the master's thesis.

The fourth semester is devoted to research and thesis writing. Students’ mobility is also fostered by various opportunities offered by the program, such as research grants for the participation in international conferences and seminars as panelists as well as the possibility to carry out internships or additional mobility experiences for the preparation of the thesis.

The teaching plan for the first year includes:

  • Two Mandatory courses:
    • Methods and Skills (I.C.)
    • State Building, Nationalism, and Development in Eastern Europe (I.C.)
  • One language course among Bosnian – Croatian - Serbian, Bulgarian, Russian, Russian Advanced, Russian intermediate, Slovak
  • Elective courses in the field of Economics, History, Media and International relations, Politics or Sociology
  • Workshops on Eastern European Politics and Economics

The teaching plan for the second year includes:

  • Elective courses among those on offer at the partner/associate universities during the compulsory mobility
  • One east European language course
  • Research and Final Examination

Career opportunities

MIREES prepares students for careers at the European Union institutions, international agencies, voluntary organizations and NGOs, public administration, private companies doing business in East-Central Europe and Russia/CIS.

MIREES is also recommended for prospective Ph.D. students. Some of our best alumni are currently attending doctoral programs at the University of Oxford, Harvard University, the New School in New York, European University Institute and at other prestigious universities around the world.
