California Institute of the Arts

Introduction

California Institute of the Arts was founded with the intent to bring different art forms together and allow them to cross-pollinate, in the process fostering collaboration and sparking innovation.

As an internationally recognized school for the performing and visual arts—film, theater, art, dance, music and writing—the CalArts artistic philosophy places an emphasis on an exploration of new paths beyond conventional boundaries.

The CalArts educational philosophy is based on close collegial interaction between teachers and students—in class, in production and in one-to-one mentoring. This approach combines rigorous instruction with individualized attention, a process that empowers students to define their own personal objectives—and to develop and refine their own distinctive artistic voices. Given more creative freedom than at traditional art schools and conservatories, our students, in turn, are self-motivated, passionate, and deeply committed to their work. They are accepted into CalArts primarily on the basis of their artistic ability; once here, they produce art from day one.

Today CalArts comprises three entities. First, is the educational and artistic program on campus. The second is REDCAT, our producing, presenting and exhibiting venue in downtown Los Angeles. The theater and gallery at REDCAT bring an eclectic mix of artists from throughout the world to Los Angeles. This state-of-the-art venue also features work by faculty and alumni. And third is CalArtsCommunity Arts Partnership (CAP), a network of collaborative partnerships that links the Institute with more than 40 arts organizations in order to provide arts education to youth throughout greater Los Angeles. Teaching in CAP programs offers students the opportunity to acquire valuable teaching experience, to earn income, and to make a significant contribution to the lives of others

MFA in Acting

The Acting Program at CalArts, offers classically centered training with an eye toward the future, designed for preparing young artists for the performance challenges of the 21st century. The aim of this program is to guide students in becoming versatile, well-rounded theater artists who have the skills to chart their own creative and professional paths. Accordingly, the program seeks talented performers who are engaged with their imaginations, guided by their passions, and compelled to speak their stories.

Reflecting the rapidly evolving landscape of contemporary performance practice, the Acting Program has moved beyond the training structures used for preparing actors for repertory theater companies. Instead, the actor of the 21st century needs to be highly versatile, able to work in any number of forms, styles and settings. This actor must be technologically literate, have a strong command of body, voice and speech, and be equally adept in theater, film, television and emerging media.... [-]

MFA in Brass

A family of separate yet interrelated courses of study, the Programs in Performance prepare students for the emerging career pathways of the 21st century-characterized by a remarkably diverse spectrum of professional practices. Each individual program enables students to develop both high-level technical skills in their areas of specialization and the breadth of knowledge and versatility required for success in today's evolving artistic world. Students are presented with myriad performance opportunities, extensive studies of both traditional and cutting-edge music, and an excellent student-faculty ratio. They also have unique opportunities to look beyond music by working in settings that merge music with other art forms, new genres, and previously uncharted areas.... [-]

MFA in Film and Video

The Program in Film and Video is designed for students who use film and video as media for personal expression and exploration—those artists for whom independent film and video is a calling and not simply a mode of production. In the workshop environment cultivated by the program, each student develops and refines his or her practice as a respected member of a community of artists.

Individually and collectively, the program’s faculty is broad in its sympathies and interests. The program supports an unparalleled breadth of work—from personal essays and political documentaries to experiments in narrative, from lyrical and abstract films to installation and new media. Students acquire a full range of technical and practical skills, learn to think critically about their chosen media, and work to develop a precise language and aesthetic for personal articulation.... MFA in Graphic design

Graphic design plays an important and varied role in today’s culture. The Program in Graphic Design prepares its students for a wide range of professional options—from publication design to web design, from film title and broadcast design to exhibition design, from type design to a career in design education. The program emphasizes both practical and conceptual skills, and enables each designer to integrate a command of visual language with imagination, theory and technology.

Classes in the Design Program are small, intimate and critique- based, fostering debate and discussion as well as imparting formal and practical knowledge. All students work in residence in communal studios (grouped by year level) that are open 24 hours, and have access to Art School facilities and labs. Each undergraduate and graduate year has a core class supported by a number of required and elective classes, allowing both structure and flexibility within the curriculum. Design Program classes are taught by a group of accomplished faculty, supplemented by a series of visiting faculty and guest lectures. In both the BFA and MFA programs, students create a body of work that is not simply a string of assignments, but which is uniquely theirs, and which prepares them, upon graduation, to carve an independent path into graphic design practice with a compelling portfolio marked by strong ideas expressed through form.... MFA in Photography and Media

The Program in Photography and Media is committed to educating independent artists in a world where photographic imagery and new media representations and strategies are omnipresent. From foundation work through graduate studies, courses are designed to challenge conventional notions of artistic practice and to question the position of representation within contemporary culture. The program encourages debate and experimentation, since nothing is stable or even particularly comfortable in photography's relation to the other arts-especially in an environment that includes so many new practices. The faculty represents a broad range of those practices, some purely photographic, some entirely digital and others branching off into writing and publishing, painting, video, filmmaking, assemblage, net art, digital media and installation.... MFA in Piano / Keyboard

Offering advanced instruction in piano and keyboards, this program is structured to refine performing skills, explore new techniques, and extend new artistic horizons in order to prepare versatile and resourceful professional performers. Students explore a broad spectrum of repertoire, from the Baroque to cutting-edge new music, and enjoy numerous opportunities to perform classical and contemporary music in solo recitals and as part of chamber music groups and large ensembles. The program also encourages students to expand their versatility by investigating other keyboard studies, such as harpsichord, jazz, systemic improvisation, interactive computer technology, and pedagogy.... MFA in Scene Design

Focusing on the development of the skills and knowledge needed for professional scene designers, this program is based on the understanding that the designer’s multifaceted contribution to a production involves much more than providing a visual background.

Under the leadership of scenic designer Christopher Barreca, whose teaching is informed by his active design practice in international, regional and Broadway venues, the curriculum explores all aspects of live performance as a collaborative process, giving special attention to the shaping of artistic vision, aesthetic sophistication, critical thinking and craft. Since scene designers are visual artists who work in theater, the program is closely allied with other visual arts programs at CalArts, as well as programs in dance, performance art, and film and video.... MFA in Sound Design

Directed by sound designer Jon Gottlieb, the Sound Design Program is devoted to a rapidly evolving field that integrates aesthetic concerns with scientific disciplines and new technological tools. The program can stretch as far as each student’s energy and imagination allows.

Although the curriculum is rooted in text-based theatrical training, sound designers take part in additional projects in experimental theater, multimedia and interactive design and production, concert sound reinforcement, performance art, animation, and live-action film and video. Accordingly, students are strongly urged to utilize all the resources, both artistic and technological, available across the entire CalArts community.... [-]

This challenging program helps students develop into highly versatile performers, improvisers and composers who are able to successfully initiate, produce and integrate work informed by jazz styles with other musical traditions and the latest innovations in contemporary music. The program emphasizes small ensemble performance and improvisation, and offers exceptional performance opportunities, both on- and off-campus, as well as opportunities to work with and observe world-class guest artists. Students rehearse and perform with faculty on a regular basis, while their work is continuously honed in private sessions, classes, ensembles and performances. Studies in this program culminate in recitals, often augmented by recording projects.... [-]

MFA Program in Dance

The MFA Program in Dance is an intensive two year course of study intended for talented dance artists who wish to pursue professional careers as choreographers and educators. To obtain the MFA degree, students must complete all course requirements and successfully present a Thesis Concert during the second year of residency. Interested and qualified graduate-level applicants to the School may apply to be considered for a supplemental concentration in Integrated Media (IM)—a course of study for interdisciplinary work with digital media.

The MFA curriculum enables each graduate student to develop and refine his or her own personal aesthetic. It includes seminars dealing with topics in professional dance—from organizing concepts in choreography to meeting the practical demands of producing concerts to identifying larger artistic and career goals. The curriculum also features classes in technique composition, dance theory, costume design, dance production, dance on camera, and digital media and editing.... [-]
