The University of Westminster boasts a rich history and has been providing students with academic excellence, cultural engagement and personal enrichment since its inception as The Polytechnic Institution in 1838. A place for pioneers

The Westminster story began in 1838, when Sir George Cayley opened the Polytechnic Institution at 309 Regent Street in London. In 1881, philanthropist Quintin Hogg, bought the Royal Polytechnic Institution building and moved his Young Men’s Christian Institute into 309 Regent Street, which soon became the publicly funded Regent Street Polytechnic.

Since then, our education institution has secured a reputation as a place for firsts. These include:

  • the first polytechnic in the UK (1838)
  • the opening of the first public photographic portrait studio in Europe (1841)
  • the venue for the first public moving picture show in the UK, organised by the Lumiere brothers (1896)
  • organising the first marathon race (at the London Olympics) over the now traditional distance of 26 miles, 385 yards (1908)
  • offering the first degree courses in Photographic Science, Photography, and Media Studies (1960s and 1970s)
  • the first modern university to win the Queen’s Award for Enterprise – International Trade
  • the UK’s first Partner University for UN Habitat, the agency which deals with human settlement and development.

The Polytechnic Institution

Established under the chairmanship of the distinguished scientist Sir George Cayley, The Polytechnic Institution at 309 Regent Street was created in order to demonstrate new technologies and inventions to the public and played a significant role in the popularisation of science.

In 1841, the name changed to The Royal Polytechnic Institution when Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria, became Patron.

The Regent Street Polytechnic

During the 1860s, Quintin Hogg, a young business man, began to provide basic education for some of London's poorest children in the slums of Covent Garden. Hogg developed his vision to provide educational, social, sporting and social opportunities for young working men in The Young Men's Christian Institute. He purchased 309 Regent Street in 1882.

New day and evening courses in technical and commercial subjects were introduced to support the expanding economy as London became the world's largest city.

The Polytechnic became publicly funded in 1891 and was re-named the Regent Street Polytechnic.

During the First and Second World Wars courses were directed towards the war effort, taking the lead in retraining the large numbers of disabled soldiers returning from war.

Polytechnic of Central London (PCL) 1970-1992

The 1960s saw a major new expansion scheme for the Regent Street Polytechnic, transforming it into a multi-site institution. A new site in Marylebone Road was to house a college of architecture and advanced building technologies, while a second new site in New Cavendish Street was to house engineering and science.

By the time the new buildings had been completed, the Regent Street Polytechnic had been merged with Holborn College of Law, Languages and Commerce to form the Polytechnic of Central London (known as PCL).

The newly formed Students’ Union played host to several leading bands of the era, including Jimi Hendrix and Cream. Pink Floyd also formed at the Polytechnic at this time.

PCL was one of 30 new polytechnics formed in 1970, awarding degrees from the Council of National Academic Awards.

Throughout the next 20 years, PCL continued its commitment to part-time and evening education, and pioneered an extensive programme of short courses for mid-career professionals that attracted more than 20,000 students a year.

University of Westminster 1992- the present

PCL gained University status in 1992, bringing the right to award its own degrees and to participate in publicly funded research.

Today’s University, with 22,000 students, is far bigger than its predecessors and is structured into four campuses – Cavendish, Harrow, Marylebone and Regent.

Our expanding overseas activity has resulted in the University being awarded the Queen's Award for Enterprise in 2000 and again in 2005.

This innovative course offers both MSc and MA streams. It has been designed to develop your ability to apply economic analysis to policy issues and business problems, which are often ambiguous and multi-faceted. Although there is a strong theoretical core, the course focus of the course is very much on the practical application of economic techniques to problems, and on developing the ability to communicate the insights that economic analysis can provide. The course has been created in conjunction with the Government Economic Service (GES) – a major employer of economics graduates in the UK. The University of Westminster is the only English university to have secured GES recommended status for a postgraduate course in economics. The course aims to provide you with an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the latest developments in economics, with a focus on practical skills and development of the skills needed by a working economist. It is specifically aimed at those with a genuine interest in the application of economics to real-world situations. As well as enhancing your ability to apply relevant economic principles in the support of policy and strategy development, the course aims to develop your ability to communicate complex issues to wide audiences, your awareness of significant sources of economic and financial data, the problems faced when carrying out policy evaluation and your capability for self-awareness and group working. Course content You will gain an understanding of the key concepts in economics that underpin public sector policy and business decision making. This includes the various scenarios where we explore opportunity cost, equilibrium and disequilibrium, strategic interaction, market failure and the related concept of externalities. You'll develop your analytical skills by applying these concepts to current challenges that face the profession, at both macro and micro levels, and in both private and public sectors. This will provide you with the latest insights drawn from both the academic and practitioner arenas. Around a common core of modules covering key theoretical and practical elements, the MSc stream offers the possibility of pursuing a course of study in economics with a greater quantitative focus, while the MA stream has a stronger international emphasis. Core modules Economic Evaluation Project This module provides you with the framework within which to develop your full project (dissertation) from the proposal submitted as part of the Research Methods module. The majority of projects undertaken by MSc students would be expected to involve an empirical component and appropriate quantitative analysis. Projects undertaken by MA students are likely to be of a more applied nature, possibly issue or problem based. Macroeconomic Analysis and Policy This module reviews the historical evolution of macroeconomic policy and, through a review of the theoretical and empirical literature, develops the analytical framework of macroeconomics underpinning contemporary macroeconomic policy. Microeconomic Analysis and Policy You will review theoretical and empirical microeconomic approaches in order to shed light on business decision making and microeconomic policy in mixed economies. Research Methods This module aims to enhance your knowledge and competence of the research process, and the application of research methods in the area of applied economics. Strategy and Appraisal in Economics This module applies the theoretical tools, concepts and methodology of economics to private and public sector scenarios, with an emphasis on communicating and appraising policy and strategy options. International Economics This module offers a critical, theoretically informed, issue-based approach to the study of international trade and investment, finance, economic institutions, globalisation and economic integration. Managing Data The ability to access, manipulate and interpret data from a range of sources, both primary and secondary, is an essential skill for economists and business professionals. This module offers a practical introduction to relevant data sources and to the tools necessary to critically explore these sources. Option modules Development Economics and Policy By exploring the concepts and theories that have been developed and applied by economists to the study of the problems of developing countries, this module explores the implications for the framing of development policy. Global Financial Markets This module provides you with an in-depth understanding of the structure and operation of foreign exchange markets, financial instruments used in global markets and the operation of financial institutions such as banks and insurance companies expanding across a number of financial markets. Students on the MA stream may take another Westminster Business School postgraduate module, with the permission of the Course Leader. Course-specific entry requirements You should normally hold a first degree from a recognised institution (minimum Lower Second Class), or international equivalent. If your first degree is in Economics or a cognate discipline such as Business, Geography, Development Studies or Mathematics, a minimum Lower Second Class (or international equivalent) is acceptable. It’s especially useful if you’re a graduate with little or no accounting experience, as it offers the opportunity to study modules which will cover this shortfall. If you are a graduate member of a UK accountancy body, or an overseas equivalent, you may claim up to four exemptions from this Masters by applying for Accreditation of Prior Certificated Learning. This would enable you to complete the taught part of the course in one semester. The course provides exemptions from 7 of the papers of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) exams. The Westminster Business School is an ACCA Gold approved learning partner and one of the few UK institutions where you can qualify for so many ACCA exemptions on completion of a one-year course. Furthermore, graduates of the course have the chance to enter the the Gateway route of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA). On successful completion of the Gateway examination, students will gain exemptions from 12 of the 17 CIMA examinations. This course will give you a firm understanding of development theory in an international context, with a particular focus on how to bring theory into practice and build your practical expertise in range of development disciplines. The course aims to enhance your capacity to critically evaluate economic, political and social factors that are affecting the development policy environment, on a national and international level. Throughout this Master’s degree, you will develop management techniques and skills, and the ability to apply them in a development context. Through empirical research and analysis, you will have the opportunity to develop specialist expertise in a particular aspect of development management. The curse is designed to prepare you for a career in development management with an international organisation, a non-governmental body or a government development agency. Our graduates are NGO programme officers, trade advisors, project managers, micro finance specialists and development consultants. Some of our graduates have also set up their own development charities or proceeded to PhD research and teaching. Course content Our regular contributors to teaching and learning activities include experienced field practitioners drawn from international development organisations and NGOs. Active and enquiry-led learning is a central learning method on the course. Learning is based studying on real-world case studies with official project materials and survey data from the World Bank, International Monetary Fund and other development agencies. As part of this course, you have the opportunity to obtain a PRINCE2 Foundation certification in project management. Westminster Business School is an approved centre for Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and this course has been accredited by the CIPD as meeting the knowledge criteria for professional membership.
