Introduction

University of Aberdeen

The University of Aberdeen is today at the forefront of teaching, learning and discovery, as it has been for 500 years. As the 'global university of the north', we have consistently sent pioneers and ideas outward to every part of the world. We are an ambitious, research-driven university with a global outlook, committed to excellence in everything we do.

History

Founded in 1495 by William Elphinstone, Bishop of Aberdeen and Chancellor of Scotland, Aberdeen is Scotland's third oldest university, and the fifth most ancient in the whole United Kingdom.

Much of the original King's College still stands today, a famous historic landmark beloved of generations of students, academics, and local people who are, inspired by the finest examples of medieval and Renaissance craftwork remaining anywhere in Scotland.

Over the centuries our graduates and scholars have changed the world in many fields of human endeavour. Their legacy and inspiration lives on today in our wide-ranging museum collections, and in our uniquely-rich historic collections and archives, soon to be available to a wide audience in our new University library.

Strategy

The University of Aberdeen is committed to becoming one of the top 100 world-leading universities, with a unique role developed over 500 years as ‘the global university of the north’.

We aim to be recognised locally, nationally and internationally as a broad-based university that delivers innovative and excellent teaching and research. We are committed to positive change, to celebrating culture, to embracing enterprise, and to pioneering new ideas and inventions.

The mission, objectives and targets outlined in our Strategic Plan are approved and monitored by the governance structure of the University Court, which has corporate and legal responsibilities, and the Senatus Academicus (Senate) which is responsible for the regulation and superintendence of teaching and the promotion of research. The General Council comprises all University graduates and certain academic staff and is empowered "to take into consideration all questions affecting the well-being and prosperity of the University, and to make representations from time to time on such questions to the University Court ".

Background

Aberdeen's Department of Archaeology is unique in the United Kingdom in that it focuses explicitly on the lifeways and worldviews of northern cultures, encompassing a region that takes in the North Atlantic, Northern Eurasia, high-latitude North America and the North Pacific.

Popular perception holds that if the 'cradle of civilization' was nurtured in warm southern climes, then the north was little more than a frozen wasteland. Such caricatures, of course, are hard to support when we consider the almost infinite and varied evidence of the human condition in the northern world. While often living in environments which could be less than favourable and even hostile, northern peoples were anything but more primitive versions of those farther south.... [-]

Master in Environmental Microbiology

Programme Length:

MSc 12 months full-time PgDip 9 months full-time

Aims

The MSc degree in Environmental Microbiology was established in 1992 and is unique in the United Kingdom. Our aim is to provide wide-ranging training in environmental microbiology, applicable both to students with previous knowledge of a relevant subject and to those with little background in environmental microbiology. We aim to provide students with theoretical knowledge, practical skills and an appreciation of the application of the subject. We also develop students' communication and generic skills. ‘Environmental Microbiology is the study of microorganisms that inhabit the Earth and their roles in carrying out processes in both natural and human-made systems’. In this subject there is much emphasis on interfaces between environmental sciences and microbial ecology. There has also been an increased interest in environmental microbiology since the late 1980s resulting from the application of novel molecular techniques. An environmental microbiologist thus needs a good grounding in basic microbiology and molecular biology, but this must be combined with knowledge of environmental science. The School of Biological Sciences has an international reputation for excellence in inter-disciplinary research in plant/soil/microbe systems designed to underpin environmental studies, and it was graded 5 in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise and this excellence was confirmed in the 2008 RAE. We have an international reputation for research into the remediation of contaminated land and molecular microbial ecology, and we have research expertise in environmental microbiology, microbial ecology, soil science, plant science, environmental science, biogeochemistry, and modelling.... MSc in People and the Environment

Programme Length: MSc: 12 months full-time or 24 months part-time

Aims

Human beings now live in what an increasing number of environmental scientists call the Anthropocene – a stage in the Earth’s geological and climate development that is dominated by the activities of humankind. Whether in the realm of conservation, biodiversity, evolution or climatology, no effective study of environmental issues can proceed without an understanding of human behaviour on both the large and the small scale.

The MSc in People and the Environment draws on the expertise of leading anthropologists to bring this relationship back into the centre of the debate and develop an understanding of the human dimensions that are inherent in all environmental issues. The programme focuses on areas such as conservation, landscape and access, human-animal relations and indigenous rights, and is designed to furnish students not simply with an informed and nuanced understanding of the issues. More than this, it also examines and questions the underlying assumptions – about the inevitability of human behaviour, about how we perceive and relate to non-humans, about our place within a natural and man-made landscape – that can hold back constructive debate in these areas.... MSc in Sex, Gender, Violence: Contemporary Critical Approaches

Programme Length:

MSc - 12 months full-time, 24 months part-time PgDip - 9 months full-time, 18 months part-time

Aims

Violence comes in many forms: from the barrel of a gun, to the end of a fist, through to the discursive power of language and the power of imagination and culture, constructing some nations, some values, some beliefs and indeed some people as unworthy of dignity or indeed of life itself. Despite being exhaustively theorized and legislated against, violence is globally rampant.

In this programme the focus will be on ways we think about, understand and respond to violence. How do we know what counts as violence or a violent act? Why does legislation against violence so often transpire as inadequate, perhaps especially in the case of gendered and sexual violence? As the links between sex, gender and violence appear intimate and often lethal, a central but not exclusive focus of the programme will be on theories and practices of sex/gender. We will also consider how violence is represented, for example in media representations of conflicts; we will look at representations of violence in popular culture especially in films; we will analyze legislative attempts to deal with violence for example in the arena of human rights and gender mainstreaming. And yet, aside from our visions of sensational violence, we will pay close attention to the brutal fecundity of violence through the banality of every-day ordinary violence. ... [-]

Understanding of soil processes and interactions with the wider biological and physicochemical systems is fundamental to sustainable development and environmental management. Soil Science offers an exciting range of specialisms, including cutting-edge biotechnology, environmental analysis and modelling opportunities. The main objective of the degree, therefore, is to provide a rigorous training in pure and applied aspects of modern soil science suitable for those intending to pursue a career in the environmental field, those already in relevant employment and those considering further research to PhD level. Teaching includes enhanced knowledge-based learning, technical development and practical skills. The MSc programme is 12 months and includes 120 credits of taught courses and a 60 credit research project. The MRes programme is more oriented towards preparation for a research career; it is 12 months, includes 90 credits of taught courses, and two projects, a 30 credit and a 60 credit. The PGDiploma is of 9 months duration and is based on only taught elements. The School of Biological Sciences has an international reputation for excellence in inter-disciplinary research in plant/soil/microbe systems designed to underpin environmental sustainability and the maintenance of biodiversity, and it was rated as excellent in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. We have an international reputation for diagnosis and remediation of contaminated land, with research expertise in soil science, environmental microbiology, biogeochemistry and modelling.... [-]
