American University of London

Online and distance learning is the future of education. Even though we live in a global village the concept of a global university – not rooted in a particular country – such as AUOL – is occasionally misunderstood by the dinosaurs of brick and mortar education especially in countries where online education is still a novelty. AUOL’s formula has proven a great success over the years. It is efficient, student-oriented, and can be transmitted from any computer terminal anywhere in the world. That is why this formula is now being championed by numerous online educational institutions around the world.

Very few people can afford to give up work to start studying, and with university fees at an all-time high, learning via traditional methods is beyond reach for many. This exciting alternative in higher education holds for you the promise of professional and personal growth without any limits or boundaries. AUOL was originally founded in 1984 as the American College of Science & Technology. AUOL, the international distance learning center, which was subsequently incorporated as an independent Online and Distance Learning University in 1999 has six Schools: Business, IT, Law, Education & Liberal Arts, Humanities, and English. AUOL is a private international institution; we are not a British University (nor are we in any way associated with the University of London) and we do not award British qualifications. AUOL Online is specialized in Distance Learning education (in other words an “open” university). Distance learning is rapidly becoming the preferred alternative, and AUOL has quickly become established as one of the pioneers in the field.

The University‘s academic staff are highly qualified and experienced. They are accustomed to working with executives, managers and consultants employed in both the private and public sectors.

Affiliates are at the centre of our educational formula. Most of the degree programs offered are taught by our affiliates. To give but one example, as soon as an enquiry is received at the university it is passed on to the relevant affiliate in the applicant’s country. Affiliates’ study programs are based on the university’s recommended curricula. Affiliates operate under the auspices of their region’s head office.

Surveys over the years have shown that a degree earned through a non-campus University with a strong reputation such as AUOL, can be just as useful as one from a traditional school. A recent report by the UK Institute for Fiscal Studies found that, on average, men with first degrees earned around 15% more than male non-graduates with similar backgrounds and levels of ability. Stanford Professor Jeffrey Pfeffeer in a recent article on traditional business schools in the Academy of Management Learning & Education writes, “Little of what is taught to students in “traditional” business schools prepare them for the corporate workplace. You have to question what goes on in the years it takes to get an MBA”. Even if a degree has no connection whatsoever with a job that has been applied for, having the credentials that make you a Bachelor, Master or Doctor are what you really need to get that better position and higher salary. In the age of digitised information, and in the global village we live in, AUOL is a pioneer. Child development focuses on the changes that occur from birth to adolescence. It attempts in the first instance to identify a child’s repertoire of behaviours at a particular time. Secondly, the discipline aims to identify the factors that influence particular development processes: that is, to specify how development occurs. As a discipline Child Development focuses on specific questions (the what, and the how) yet it covers a wide range of topics. A simple, theoretical way of breaking down the discipline is to consider three main areas of study. These descriptive areas refer to the topic of investigation rather than a specific orientation to a problem. Physical changes: The growth of the body offers tremendous opportunity for change. An infant who is strong enough to walk can explore a much wider environment. A child whose fine motor skills are delayed will have difficulty writing in the classroom. The physical changes of puberty are classic examples of how changes in the body can influence wider psychological processes in the individual. Cognitive development: Changes in the ways in which children think about their world as they mature has a profound effect on their ability to cope with the demands of school and daily life. The ability to process greater amounts of complex information offers scope for learning new skills and knowledge. Social-emotional development: Here the focus of investigation is the relations the child has with others, including parents, peers and friends. There has been a long-standing interest in topics such as attachment to caretakers and the development of morality. More recently, the ways in which children develop an understanding of gender, expand their skills in interpersonal communication and form friendships have become new and exciting areas of research.
