About STUST Southern Taiwan University

STUST was founded in 1969. As of the 2007 academic year, we have a total of four colleges—College of Engineering, College of Business, College of Digital Design, College of Humanities and Social Sciences—25 departments, 11 graduate institutes (which offer 12 Master's programs and 3 doctoral programs), 4 teaching centers and 18 research centers.


STUST has over 800 faculty members, and we currently have approximately 18,000 students enrolled, of which over 170 are international students.

Our campus is located in the north-eastern suburb of Tainan City on an area of 16 hectares. To our west is Tainan City, and to our east is Yung-Kang City. Our campus is less than 4 km from Tainan’s Railway Station. Our school is truly located in an area with the beauty of the countryside and the convenience of metropolitan life.


Mission

“Willing to educate qualified students” and “benefiting society and adding to the development of our nation” are lyrics that appear in STUST's school song, and they were the purposes for establishing this university. The mission of STUST is to pursue academic excellence in both technological fields and in the humanities.

During the past 40 years, with the board of directors and tens of thousands of teachers and students working together, STUST has grown and developed. We are now undoubtedly the leader of private universities of technology in Taiwan.

Department OverviewThe Department of Electrical Engineering at Southern Taiwan University was established in 1969. Presently there are 37 faculty members actively engaging in research and teaching in three fields of expertise: Control and IC, Power and Information, Biomedical Electronics. As of June 2007, the enrollment of EE department was 1101, including 989 in the undergraduate program and 112 in the graduate program. STUT EE Department is offering programs which award BS, MS, and Doctoral degrees.According to a May 2007 issue of Evaluation, a bimonthly publication dedicated to evaluation and accreditation of higher education in Taiwan, in a survey based on the data from ISI web of Science from 2002 to 2006, STUT’s EE Department ranked 15th on both “total number of papers”and “total number of citations”categories among all Electrical Engineering Departments in Taiwan. Since 2000, STUT’s EE Department constantly ranked among the top EE Departments of private universities in the number of research grants from the National Science Council of Taiwan.... [-]

To meet the new wave of mechatronics engineering age and the upcoming new millennium, in 2002 the institute is founded to meet the needs of the nation's long-term development. The institute aims to develop advanced mechatronics technology and system by integrating interdisciplinary sciences of electrical engineering, electronics engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, control, material and opto-electronics along with the technology of IC and opto-electronic type actuator and sensor development, precision finishing, design positioning, control, fabrication and inspection. Amid knowledge economy era, more and more successful enterprises have already shifted organization resource from mass production to unique design and innovation.  For enhancing market competition, increasing sales volume and profitability and avoiding low-price war, Taiwan government and enterprises highly aware have already advocated the concept of design value added aggressively.  Taiwan design industry has won 450 awards in 4 major international design awards in Japan G-Mark, USA IDEA, Germany iF and Reddot, including 10 top awards since 2003.  Taiwan industry design even won 65 awards in Germany iF design competition in 2006, surpassing Japan and Korean and ranking the second next to host country Germany and topping in Asia.  It proves Taiwan designers have already reached top international level and also “design” is a trend that Taiwan must continue development. ...
