National Central University was originally founded in Nanjing, China in 1915. NCU had later developed into a renowned academic institution with comprehensive programs and outstanding faculty, enjoying a high reputation equal to that of Peking University. In 1962, the Graduate Institute of Geophysics was founded in Miaoli, Taiwan as the re-establishment of the University. The campus was relocated to Zhongli in 1968, and today it has become a home to more than thirteen thousand students and teachers.

As one of the leading universities in Taiwan, NCU has eight colleges: Liberal Arts, Science, Engineering, Management, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Earth Sciences, Hakka Studies, and Health Science and Technology, along with several research centers covering cutting-edge disciplines. NCU is also one of the members of the University System of Taiwan (UST) , sharing resources with Tsing Hua University, Chiao Tung University, and Yang Ming University.

Around the globe, NCU currently has about 170 partners in North America, Europe, and Asia. The cooperation mainly focuses on student exchange programs and double degree programs to offer our students more opportunities to study abroad.

In recent years, we have been selected twice in “The Aim for the Top University Project”, receiving grants from the Ministry of Education. The University has been evaluated “Excellent” for the past few years. We are now conducting research into four main fields: Environment and Energy, Complex Systems and Plasma Sciences, Optics and Opto-electronics, and Applied Informatics: Learning, Enterprise, Life.

The Institute of Atmospheric Physics is responsible for the graduate programs in atmospheric sciences. The Institute has both the master and the Ph.D. programs. Students in each program are enrolled separately through entrance exam of master or Ph.D. programs. For students studying toward the master degree, the goal of the Institute is to build up their research ability and to equip them with advanced knowledge and research tools in atmospheric sciences. Therefore, they are required to take at least 24 credits of advanced courses in atmospheric sciences. Furthermore, each student must complete, under the supervision of one of the institute’s faculty members, a master thesis in his/her special field. As for students toward the Ph.D. degree, developing their independent research ability is of primary concern. Therefore, Ph.D. students are only required to take 18 credits of courses but are required to, under the supervision of one or several Institute’s faculty members, conduct an original research in their interested fields. Graduate Institute of Environmental Engineering (GIEE) was expanded from the Environmental Engineering Division affiliated with the Department of Civil Engineering. Founded in 2001, the Institute of Hydrological Sciences (IHS) provides opportunities in research and education in three major areas: global hydrological cycles, hydrosphere environmental sciences, and information-technology based hydro-hazard mitigation. Through analysis, observation, and multi-scale modeling, the IHS seeks to investigate various processes and phenomena crucial to the environmental sustainability pertaining to the hydrological cycle, including climate change, land-ocean-atmosphere interactions, precipitation processes, surface/subsurface hydrology, coastal ocean processes and aquatic biogeochemistry. IHS welcomes domestic as well as international collaboration, which is much needed for attacking research topics of regional to global scale. Institute of Materials Science and Engineering (IMSE) was founded in August, 2005, and currently offers both master and doctoral programs. The long-term aim of our institute is to establish a world-class materials science research teaching unit. As for short-term, we focus on developing renewable energy and hydrogen-related technology by combining different fields of research within NCU, such as Nano-structures, catalysts, energy, and environment. Hydrogen production, solar cells, LEDs, fuel cells, secondary batteries, and super capacitors are our important topics. IMSE currently consists of 7 faculties, 2 chair professor, 2 joint faculties, and 2 adjunct faculties. In addition to the institute office , there are individual offices for all the professors in IMSE. The department admits around 100 undergraduates, 100 students to the master program, 30 students to the part-time master program, and 25 students to the doctoral program each year.
