EEG offers 8 undergraduate degree courses, of which 4 are taught in post-labour regime; 16 Master Programmes and 6 Doctoral Programmes, of which 3 are jointly offered along with other higher education institutions.


EEG total number of students is over 2400, among which 1351are undergraduates, and 1079 graduates - 918 master students and 161 doctoral students.


About 20% of our undergraduate students participate in international mobility programs and it offers about 30 course units in English.


EEG has 3 departments and 5 research centres. Three of these centres achieved maximum rating of Excellent awarded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology – FCT.


90% of the faculty of the school holds a PhD degree awarded by most prestigious institutions, such as, inter alia, the universities of Oxford, Warwick, Lancaster, Essex, Manchester, Nottingham, Cornell, Stockholm, London School of Economics, Tinbergen Institute and the European University Institute.

Doctoral Programmes


In 2012/2013, the School of Economics and Management (EEG) offers six PhD Programmes: Administration Sciences, Entrepreneurial Sciences, Political Science and International Relations, Accounting, Economics, Marketing strategy.


The provision of doctoral programmes reflects the EEG’s scientific expertise. The quality of its faculty, trained in European and American universities as diverse as Oxford University, University of Warwick, Lancaster University, University of Essex, Cornell University, Stockholm School of Economics, London School of Economics, Tinbergen Institute or the European Institute in Florence has positioned the EEG in a very high ranking in research in Portugal: 3 research centres with a maximum rating of Excellent. The pursuit of a doctoral programme as offered by the EEG is the guarantee of obtaining a high degree of national and international recognition.


The EEG partners with other Portuguese Universities in the offering of three doctoral programmes.


The PhD in Economics is the result of a partnership with the University of Coimbra; the PhD in Accounting brings along the University of Aveiro; and, the PhD in Marketing and Strategy combines the efforts of the Universities of Minho, Aveiro and Beira Interior.

Justification and Purpose Accounting is increasingly seen as a scientific domain with great impact both on the social and economic areas. The organization, through Accounting, can get useful and timely information which will help scholars, and practitioners, on their decision making processes. Nonetheless, constant changes in the legislative framework, in the accounting thought and theory development, compel those who have chosen this area of knowledge as a professional activity or as a tool for decision making, to undergo a continuous process of learning. Holders of our Master degree in Accounting should be highly skilful and competent in Accounting, Auditing and Taxation. This advanced and thorough qualification, will improve their scientific education and professional performance and will help them to evolve as active members within the decision making process in private or public, national or international companies and in dynamic and competitive environments. In addition, this programme does also envisage to: Acquire in-depth scientific training in Accounting. Develop avanced scientific research in Accounting. Apply some underlying principles to the constitution of an European High Education Area, within the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), whilst supplying updated flexible curricula. It is a four-semester-long Master Programme, which corresponds to a total of 120 ECTS. Throughout the 1st year, the expected learning outcomes and the programme coursework, address the needs of graduates from areas such as Accounting, Auditing and Taxation. It also accommodates the needs of recent graduates wishing to be experts in Accounting and, in particular, Chartered Accounting Technicians, Auditors, Accounting Lecturers and Researchers. The Master Programme in Economics is designed to provide advanced training in Economics to holders of a 1st cycle in Economics or Management. It is a three-semester-long programme which corresponds to 100 ECTS. Justification and Purpose The Master Programme in European Union Policies and Territorial Cooperation, is a joint programme under the umbrella of the University of Minho (EEG and ICS), Portugal, and the University of Vigo, Spain, along with the support of the European Centre of Excellence (EEET). It intends to contribute to the development and updating of knowledge on the policies of the European Union and Territorial Co-operation. Its specific objectives are listed below: Deepen the issues of development and social inequalities, the environment and social change, of the territorial dynamics and processes of globalisation; Provide in-depth knowledge about the institutional system of the EU and its political processes (actors, contexts and agendas); Increase awareness about the philosophy, standards, financial instruments and, in particular, the initiatives that characterise the European agenda; Analyse the characteristics, earnings and deficits of territorial co-operation promoted by the EU; Project the territorial co-operation in the framework of the European Union, and with respect to the Euroregion Galicia-Northern Portugal, to deepen knowledge of this reality in the social, economic, political, cultural and administrative dimension. It is a three-semester-long Master Programme which accounts for 90 ECTS. The two first semestres are devoted to the programme coursework, whereas the completion of the third semester may occur in the format of an internship in an institution/company, or a project work. Justification and Purpose This Master Course aims at providing advanced training to graduates wishing to improve their knowledge and skills in the banking, insurance and financial area. Students will deepen their knowledge on the functioning of the monetary, banking, financial and insurance markets and they will become more skillful and able to contribute productively to the financial sector of the economy. The Study Plan starts with basic theoretical training, followed by course units applied to the banking, financial and insurance sectors, in particular: (i) fundaments in Macroeconomics, Microeconomics and Econometrics; and (ii) specific training in the area of Monetary, Banking, Finance and Insurance Economics. The second year of this Master Course is dedicated to research and the preparation of an original Dissertation or, alternatively, an Internship + Report, always under the guidance of one or two supervisors. More specifically, this master degree course aims at endowing students with skills and abilities that can be summarised in the following expected outcomes: Integrate knowledge on Monetary Economics, Banking and Financial Economics and Insurance. Understand how an equilibrium is generated in the banking and financial sectors, through interest rates. Analyse: (i) the functioning of the monetary and financial markets; (ii) monetary, insurance and financial institutions; and (iii) main methods of financial assets evaluation. Use, in a rigorous manner, the bibliographic and data sources, the relevant indicators, as well as the principal statistics and econometric techniques used in this field of knowledge. This Master Programme was audited and accredited unconditionally by A3es-Agency for the Evaluation and Accreditation of Higher Education, in 2014. Master in Public Administration

Whilst being based upon two fields of expertise ("Specialisation in Public Administration and Public Policy" and "Specialisation in Government and Local Administration", respectively), this course provides in-depth knowledge in various scientific fields of the Administrative Sciences and allows students to strengthening soft skills, in the course unit of "Methodology and Transversal Skills", or in the numerous activities promoted by EEG. Justification and Purpose One of the biggest problems pinpointed within the scope of the Portuguese Public Administration, including all spheres of action, is the lack of qualified human resources capable of performing efficiently and effectively the management of Public Services and Public Companies at different organisational levels. The current financial constraints, the search for excellence in services’ provision units and the challenge of offering new alternate solutions envisaging the full satisfaction of social needs do require other than routinary practices and systematic improvisations. Indeed, most public professionals, holding management /leadership positions and holding specific theoretical training, still struggle with continuous problems of insufficient knowledge in public administration and in public policies. In this context, this is a comprehensive and innovative project that endows students with in-depth theoretical and methodological skills. Therefore, it envisages to: Prepare specialised professionals in Administrative Sciences and Management of Public Services, State Business Sector and Third Sector Organisations; Stimulate the development of a new public management mindset taking into account the current demands of the public provision of services. Whilst being based upon two fields of expertise ("Specialisation in Public Administration and Public Policy" and "Specialisation in Government and Local Administration", respectively), this course provides in-depth knowledge in various scientific fields of the Administrative Sciences and allows students to strengthening soft skills, in the course unit of "Methodology and Transversal Skills", or in the numerous activities promoted by EEG. No matter the field of expertise, the programme is structured in three semestres, which corresponds to 100 ECTS. This Programme allows students to deepen their previous education in economics. It also envisages to explore the emerging fields of the third sector, sustainability of Non-Profit Organisations, as well as more specific realities of Economic Science, in particular, Tourism Economics, the Economics of Sports and Welfare Economics, and thus prepare students to conduct scientific research. Justification and Purpose This Programme allows students to deepen their previous education in economics. It also envisages to explore the emerging fields of the third sector, sustainability of Non-Profit Organisations, as well as more specific realities of Economic Science, in particular, Tourism Economics, the Economics of Sports and Welfare Economics, and thus prepare students to conduct scientific research. Hence, it unfolds a double objective: Strengthen the EEG advanced academic offer in innovative domains of Economics; Offer advanced training in the field of the Social Economics. It is a three-semester-long programme which comprises 100 ECTS; the two first semester is dedicated to coursework. Coursework (first year) aims at strengthening the students’ soft skills and endowing students with a thorough knowledge of Economics Science applied to the Third Sector – through course units as diverse as the Economics of Tourism, the Economics of Institutions, or Multiculturalism, Citizenship and Social Inclusion.
