Introduction

The University of Silesia in Katowice, established in 1968, is one of the biggest public universities in Poland which educates over 30.000 students. It contains 12 faculties and several university-wide didactic units spread into four cities of the Silesian region: Katowice, Sosnowiec, Chorzów and Cieszyn.

The University of Silesia in Katowice was created through a merger of the branch of the Jagiellonian University that had existed in Katowice since 1963 and the Higher School of Pedagogy, the only school in the region with a history dating back to 1928. The has signed over 440 international agreements with over 300 institutions from all over the world. Our partners are universities, research centres and enterprises from Germany, France, Italy, Russia, USA, Spain, China and many others.

Cooperation agreements enable student and academic staff exchanges as well as joint educational and research projects. The University of Silesia actively participates in LLP/Erasmus programme and other European Commission initiatives focused both on educational and scientific development. A graduate of the programme receives a solid preparation in the field of the computer science, including not only its theoretical basis and mathematical knowledge, but also gains knowledge in areas such as operating system and computer network architecture, algorithms and basics of programming. Studies on a programme Computer Science, run by a Faculty of Computer and Material Sciences, do not teach only the usage of well-known tools, but rather focus on creating new solutions in informatics. A graduate of the programme receives a solid preparation in the field of the computer science, including not only its theoretical basis and mathematical knowledge, but also gains knowledge in areas such as operating system and computer network architecture, algorithms and basics of programming. Student gets to know the methods of system and database designing – putting gained knowledge to practice, choosing right methods and tools to perform certain actions, caring for safety of system and data. Current situation on the market does not only demand dry knowledge from the computer scientist. What is just as important is creativity – the ability to solve non-trivial problems, which require the scientist to use methods and techniques characterized as artificial intelligence. The graduate is familiar with methods of tackling with complex problems, techniques of analyzing data, gathering information and creating knowledge-based systems. Requirements Candidates applying for graduate studies on the programme Computer Science: Modelling and Visualisation in Bioinformatics should own the Engineering Degree in Computer Science programme. In case the candidate graduated his Engineering or Bachelor’s Degree studies in any other programme, he should take a qualification exam confirming his knowledge on the subject. For the Engineering Degree graduates of Computer Science programme the acceptance for studies is based on an average of graduate’s marks. For the graduates of other programmes the acceptance for studies is based on the mark of the qualification exam and an average of graduate’s marks, accordingly to the following formula: W = 0.5 D + 0.5 T Where: D – average of graduate’s marks T – qualification exam mark The formula serves is used in creating the ranking list of the candidates. Candidates will be accepted for studies accordingly to the list. In case the candidate graduated in Computer Sciences, the value of T is treated as the highest grade in the qualification exam. The Master’s degree programme in Biotechnology equips students with various aspects of specialist areas of biotechnology. Students acquire knowledge of the molecular basis of biological processes, with advanced knowledge on disciplines such as bioinformatics, bioethics, plant and microbial biotechnology. They will be trained in the use of different experimental techniques in various types of laboratories required for employment in the biotechnology industry. They will also participate in lectures provided by guest researchers in the framework of the Lifelong Learning Programme-LLP/Erasmus. Specializations offered Plant Biotechnology Environmental Biotechnology Foreign language course offered English Career opportunities Most graduates are expected to start laboratory-based careers in institutions connected with the food and pharmaceutical industry, health care, environmental protection, plant breeding, pest control or similar branches of science and economy. Admission requirements A minimal number of 10 candidates are accepted to the programme. A candidate is expected to present the knowledge, qualifications and skills acquired while obtaining a Bachelor's or Master’s degree, or equivalent Master’s degree studies related to natural sciences. Specifically, a candidate should: be familiar with basic concepts and terminology related to natural sciences define and interpret basic natural phenomena and their processes be able to apply the basic techniques and research used in natural sciences present the knowledge in maths, physics and chemistry necessary to understand basic natural phenomena and their processes Verification of candidates is based on a supplement to their diploma or a transcript of records. The verified candidates are classified according to the average mark of their studies. The central premise of the specialization is to provide versatile education to future Americanists and Canadianists, who, thoroughly prepared for professional work in areas in which they will combine fluent, near-native English with the knowledge of diplomatic processes, international law, intercultural and internatioanal relations, will also develop practical diplomatic skills and intercultural expertise facilitating efficient communications at all levels of intercultural relations. Graduates thus profiled will be prepared to work as specialists in units of public administration and members of diplomatic corps as middle-tier officers and public servants. They will also be valuable employees of territorial administration and local governments, or liaison managers in companies involved with international business. Such a graduate will be an asset to all organizations in need of experts who have attained a near-native command of English and developed diplomatic skills neccessary in the context of business talks, political negotiations and intercultural mediation. Admission requirements The candidates, which graduated their Bachelor’s degree studies in English Philology, or Philology, specialization: English, may apply for studies. So may the candidates, which graduated Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree and Master’s (long-term) studies and own one of the following certificates confirming advanced knowledge in English: British Council IELTS (with the score of at least 7.0), TOEFL iBT (with score of at least 100), TOEFL BPT (with score of at least 600), Cambridge CAE (level B at least), Cambridge CPE (level C at least), PTE Academic (with score of at least 70), or International Baccalaureate (English chosen as language A or B, with the mark of 5 the lowest). Additional requirements: Candidates applying for the programme should be familiar with the content of the Bachelor’s studies in English Philology, or Bachelor’s studies in Philology, specialization: English. The candidates which graduated in other programme are bound to complete the missing requirements. The curriculum differences, along with the schedule and the means of their completion will be defined by the Dean of the Faculty of Philology individually for each of such candidates. Qualification procedure: The qualification is based on the degree contest on the Bachelor’s diploma. Students of the University of Silesia which graduated their Bachelor’s degree studies in the programme of English Philology or Philology with specialization of English have the priority in the qualification. With the knowledge and skills needed in the labour market, the graduate will get the possibility to work in the rapidly expanding interactive entertainment and video game market, as well as in advertising agencies and cultural institutions. The main aim of the programme in Video Games and Virtual Reality Designing is to develop a Master’s Degree graduate prepared to conduct independent operations in the field of video games and virtual reality designing. With the knowledge and skills needed in the labour market, the graduate will get the possibility to work in the rapidly expanding interactive entertainment and video game market, as well as in advertising agencies and cultural institutions. Graduate’s broad competence will grant him a range of possibilities in his future professional activity. The syllabus of the specialization Computer Games Graphics focuses on practice, familiarizing the student with the profession of a graphic designer. The specialization incorporates the competence in the field of artistic graphics and graphic designing. It emphases the knowledge of computer generated graphics workshop, especially the latest technologies of game designing (computer based 2D graphics and 3D animations, game engine and level designing, special effects, lighting, textures, frame manipulation, 3D modelling, object and character model manipulation, game’s world designing). The programme stresses also the ability to work with co-producers in the area of video games and interactive entertainment (scenarists, producers, programmers, etc.). Career opportunities The graduate of the Video Games and Virtual Reality Designing programme receives a Master of Arts Degree and the competence necessary to work as a computer graphics designer. Rapidly growing video game industry suffers of staff deficiency since its very beginning. The market sector is characterized by the constantly increasing labour demand for the qualified specialists in the area of preproduction, production and postproduction of the interactive entertainment. Broad competences achieved during studies will provide the student with a range of possibilities in his future career. Review and assessment of portfolios Review and assessment of portfolios takes place in presence of the candidate on 28-29 June in the building on Paderewskiego 13 in Cieszyn (43-400), rooms 103 and 104, between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM. The day and time will be specified for each candidate separately after the registration. The results of the assessment will be announced on 29 June 2016 at 6:30 PM at Paderewskiego 13, 43-400 Cieszyn. The interview concerning current media market and its relations with culture and art will take place on 30 June 2016 at 6:30 PM at Paderewskiego 13, 43-400 Cieszyn, rooms 103 and 104, between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM. The results will be announced on 6 July 206 at 2:00 PM in the IRK system and in the building at Paderewskiego 13, 43-400 Cieszyn. Additional information concerning review of portfolios The day and time of the review will be assigned to each candidate automatically after his registration is completed and the examination fee has reached the account of the University of Silesia. During the review of portfolios the candidate may present up to 5 large works of drawing and 5 paintings (larger than 50x70 cm). Additionally, presentation of drawing and painting sketches, concept arts, illustrations, animations, 3D graphics, collages, etc. is permitted. The sketchbook por binder is treated as a single work. In case of digital 2D works it is necessary to provide source files (work steps, layers, files in .psd format). The works to be presented should be saved as .jpg or .pdf. Animations and movies should be saved as .mp4, .avi, .mov, .wmv. In case of 3D works it is necessary to provide source files or/and objects in .obj or .fbx format, as well as textures. The works may be opened via 3dsMax 2014, Maya 2014, Zbrusk4r7 and Mudbox 2014. In case the candidate wishes to present more of his works, it is necessary that the commission is informed before the review. The student can choose the educational path of the specialization of resocialization with intercultural education at the graduate level full-time or part-time either in Polish or English (in a separately organized learning group). The graduate of the specialization of resocialization with intercultural education has competencies in the fields of pedagogy, sociotherapy, education and organization, and interpersonal communication. S/he has detailed, broadened and updated knowledge of the significance of resocialization pedagogy in the system of the sciences; of its factual and specific methodology and its relations to other scientific disciplines. Moreover, the graduate will have broader knowledge concerning intercultural education. Assumptions of the programme dictate that each student of this specialization has broader knowledge of work organization, structures, forms of work and management in resocialization, sociotherapeutic, diagnostic, guardian-educational, therapeutic, and aid institutions which support individuals in need in various age groups. Students obtain the knowledge of how these fields work within the probation and penitentiary systems. They also know how the above mentioned activities, phenomena and procedures are implemented in culturally diverse environments. Therefore, significant knowledge of the legal aspects of resocialization and security is acquired. The graduate has a detailed and deepened knowledge of the history and of the contemporary systems of resocialization in educational, therapeutic and non-institutional environments. S/he also has broadened knowledge of the process of socialization and education in the multicultural environment and knows the issues of socialization, care and education in depth within the context of current educational and civil changes. Therefore, the student is prepared for undertaking pedagogical activities aimed at the active shaping of an economic and social balance in a dynamically changing world. S/he has a well-organized and deep knowledge concerning the methodological problems of resocialization pedagogy and intercultural education. The graduate of the specialization of resocialization with intercultural education has detailed knowledge of historical and contemporary achievements in the field of educational, resocialization and sociotherapeutic work. Special consideration is given to the specific functioning of contemporary support systems; juvenile resocialization, family support and the support of minors, educational support for teachers, and aid for adults with social adaptation problems or conflict with the law, as well as world trends in this field. Each graduate has knowledge of the theory and methodology of resocialization work and sociotherapy with children, youth and adults and understands the methods and principles of resocialization and psycho-pedagogical diagnosing of children and other groups needing support, including the social and environmental diagnosis oriented to multicultural communities. They understand the methodology of work in the open environment and in isolating units, the methodology of work and education in culturally diversified environments. S/he also possesses the knowledge and skills concerning appropriate preventive activities based on the techniques of recognizing the pedagogical and social reality. The graduate knows and is aware of the problems typical of tutors' work and of resocialization, educational, guardian-educational and therapeutic institutions and, what is most important, s/he knows the needs and problems of people who require resocialization, care and support in various aspects. S/he can independently recognize the needs of people belonging to various ethnic, national and religious groups; has the ability to cooperate in interpersonal relations; can undertake educational, therapeutic and intervention activities. Owing to the extended course in intercultural education, the graduate is prepared for work in culturally diversified environments. It should be emphasized that graduates of the discussed specialization have well-developed abilities concerning various forms of communication. In particular, they are concise when expressing their thoughts, efficient public speakers, can create efficient texts, conduct discussions, polemics, negotiations, self-assessment reports and conduct themselves well in official public situations. The graduates create and conduct various methodological and organizational forms which enable or support resocialization, therapeutic, educational or preventive work with children, youth, family or the elderly, also from culturally diversified environments. Owing to participation in classes, the graduate has deepened skills of conducting scientific research, knows methodological techniques and tools to prepare for work as a tutor or tutor-therapist in resocialization, guardian, educational, penitentiary institutions and for work as an educationalist in diagnostic-consulting institutions and administration units which deal with such activities. The classes will be conducted by practitioners and coaches who daily deal with the care and education of the young. Some classes will be carried out by distance learning with the application of e-learning materials. Graduates can join the existing (or create their own) preventive or therapeutic projects and programmes, both in resocialization institutions and in sociotherapeutic, guardian, and educational ones, as well as in the open (also culturally diversified) environment. They have a well-organized and deepened knowledge of axiological, ideological, legal, organizational and pedagogical functioning of contemporary forms of resocialization, care, education, therapy and social prevention. Graduates know the major resocialization institutions currently functioning in Poland as well as current legal and organizational solutions. It is worth emphasizing that owing to the studies at the specialization resocialization with intercultural education the student acquires pedagogical preparation, professional qualifications in resocialization pedagogy and factual and methodological competences in intercultural education. Career opportunities The graduate of this specialization is equipped with reliable knowledge of resocialization pedagogy with the basics of intercultural education and with the skills of conducting scientific research, independent solving of theoretical and practical problems related to the specialization and the orientation towards pro-social activity and self-perfecting. The graduate of the specialization of resocialization with intercultural education can be employed as: tutor in youth educational centres and youth sociotherapy centres (Journal of Acts, No 50, item 400), tutor in youth detention centres and juvenile shelters, (Journal of Acts, No 50, item 400), educationalist /educational counselor/ in schools, institutions of non-school education, institutions providing care and education for learners educated outside the place of their permanent residence, educationalist /educational counselor/ in psychological-pedagogical centres, tutor in school and environmental care centres, tutor in boarding schools, educationalist /educational counselor/ in diagnostic-consulting centres, worker of crisis intervention points and points of work with perpetrators and victims of crimes, educationalist /educational counselor/ in social prevention centres, tutor in guardian-educational institutions of various types, educationalist /educational counselor/, tutor, animator in government, non-government and commercial organizations, promoting socialization and organizing support for people from multicultural environments. Moreover, the graduate possesses the required professional qualifications to apply for the position of court probation officer and of a tutor in a penitentiary unit (after fulfilling the remaining competition requirements specified by separate legal regulations). Admission requirements Studies II degree in pedagogy are designed for people with an undergraduate degree in education or a college degree majoring in education with specialty: teaching. The participants of the study may also be candidates other than the above-mentioned education higher education (undergraduate) from the area of ​​social sciences or humanities. For these candidates expected extended program requirements that will be interested to pursue as paid educational service. An additional requirement is formally documented knowledge English language level B2. A candidate applying for admission has the knowledge, skills and social competencies necessary to undertake educational studies second degree in this direction, in particular: Should know the basic knowledge of pedagogy as a science or field of art, Has graduated from an undergraduate programme; Has knowledge of the principles and ethical standards; Is able to observe, study and draw conclusions from the various areas of social activities and the humanities; Has skills in interpersonal communication; Can develop their professional skills in the field of knowledge, skills and social competencies; Knows the English language at the B2 level. The studies are meant for people who possess an undergraduate diploma (or graduate) in pedagogy which entitles to work in school, guardian, therapeutic and other educational institutions. The participants of the studies can also be candidates with other than the earlier mentioned undergraduate (BA) education in the field of social sciences if they complete the curricular differences in order to acquire general pedagogic qualifications. Graduates finish the specialization in the language in which they acquired the teaching effects required for completing the studies in the course and specialization. Graduates will possess extensive, cohesive knowledge of theoretical physics, proficiency in using sophisticated mathematic methods and advanced computer methods, including digital simulations. MA theses can be prepared in classical topics related to the theory of solids, field theory, theory of elementary particles or astrophysics, as well as nanophysics or quantum information science. Career opportunities Graduates from Theoretical Physics will have thorough knowledge of physics and mathematics, which makes them fully-fledged specialists who are capable of taking employment at universities and scientific institutions.
