Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences was established based on KTU Board Resolution No. V7-T-17 caused by University renewal program in studies and research. The Faculty started its activity since January 1, 2014. It is derived from the Faculty of Fundamental Sciences founded in September 1, 1993.



Faculty of Fundamental Sciences was founded on September 1, 1993. According to KTU Senate Resolution, three departments from different faculties (Physics, founded in 1922, Mathematical Research in Systems, founded in 1940, and Applied Mathematics, founded in 1962) were joined. The main purpose of establishment of the faculty was to activate scientific activities of physicists and mathematicians, and to improve the preparation of KTU students in the fields of mathematics and physics. The goal was also to provide greater independence for physics and mathematics departments in order they can competing their study programs and train the specialists.

Research and education at the Faculty is carried out in the following major areas:

  • Applied Mathematics
  • Applied Physics
  • Medical Physics
  • Materials and Nanotechnologies.

It also supports interdisciplinary and inter-field education and inter-institutional research.

About Faculty

The Faculty provides 3 undergraduate programmes and 4 graduate programmes for Lithuanian students. It has a strong international profile on undergraduate, graduate and research level. Incoming international students can join to one of 4 full degree study programmes organized in English. The Faculty participates in many European exchange programmes for students, such as Erasmus, Nordplus programme, IAESTE, and has bilateral agreements signed with high ranked EU Universities. On research level the Faculty also participates with a large number of projects in national and international level.

Leisure time

Student’s union FUMSA at Mathematics and Natural Sciences Faculty unites the most active students from applied mathematics, applied physics and materials and nanotechnology specialties, who wish to work for the benefit of their faculty students.

At present, many active and friendly students from FUMSA are trying to ensure social, academic, and cultural well-being of the faculty students. The members of FUMSA are the same students, who have a common goal.

The union has long lasting traditions: every year they organize exclusive freshmen camp that is a march to life, staying on Bražuolė river coast. Annual thematic "freshman" christening tradition is unforgettable also. 3x3 basketball tournament for the Dean's Cup is organized in the early spring.

Every year in spring FSA FUMSA organizes the largest festival of the Faculty “FD” (better known as "Funtiks’ Day"), which lasts four and sometimes even five days.

Learning outcome Knowledge the newest knowledge about fundamental, classical, quantum and theoretical physics, physical laws on polymer and super conductors, concepts, equations, phenomenon, their experimental and theoretical basis nowadays physical technologies: vacuum, plasma, laser; the research of the newest physical technologies, methodics of technological measurements and techniques, analysis and processing of obtained experimental results. Intellectual Abilities understand the newest nowadays physics achievements and problems; master high technologies and their physical background, micro and nano technologies. Practical Abilities to apply physical measurement methods and technique; to plan, organize and maintain practical research, experiments, beginning with the formulating of the problem, the selection of research equipment and methodics and ending with the evaluation of the results; to create physical technologies; creatively use nowadays informational technologies, apply them in physical technologies. Transferable Abilities understand the culture of continued studies, have the skills of studying that are needed for the constant professional training ; keep such intellectual units, as: creativeness, innovation, enthusiasm, discipline, motivation; management, negotiation and leadership skills.
