Knowing the School

The School of Science is characterized by great complexity generated by the merger into a single organizational structure of numerous educational and scientific realities related to the basic sciences.

This complexity makes the provision of training of the School of Sciences extremely wide and varied. It ranges from computer science to mathematics and physics and astronomy, chemistry and industrial chemistry, biology, geology, environmental sciences and natural to the technologies for the conservation and restoration of cultural heritage. All these disciplines, although apparently very distant from each other, are united by the same rigorous and systematic approach used to address the research in their respective fields, and that is based on the formulation of models and their experimental confirmation. In alignment with European standards, the three-year degree courses in School of Science fulfill the priority task of providing basic training, while it is left to the Master of Science professional preparation updated on issues of great scientific importance and relevance. Characteristic of the School of Science is the close connection between the educational activities conducted by teachers and the research they developed within the Departments involved in the school. This activity is characterized in many cases to levels of excellence and for this reason the results found and are widely spread and recognition nationally and internationally. Thanks to the intense scientific activity conducted within the departments, the student during his training (especially in the context of the Master of Science) has the opportunity to attend workshops and participate in them directly to the research conducted using the same instrument at the disposal of the teaching staff. The student also has the opportunity to complete their training by participating in "stage" at outside companies. The ' internationalization is a dimension inherent in all the educational offer of the school: the student can choose from courses of study offered in partnership with other universities (Joint Programmes and Double Degrees), degree programs offered entirely in English and has the opportunity to participate in programs of international mobility in Europe and in other countries for periods of study, training and research.


The organization of university studies is divided into three cycles: Degree Courses of the first cycle and single-cycle (Bachelor, Master single-cycle), Curriculums of the second cycle (MSc) degree programs of the third cycle (Doctorates Research and Graduate Schools). Are also active professional courses like Master of first and second level, Higher Education Courses, Training permanent and intensive courses, Summer and winter school.

Master of Science

The degree program, which can be accessed with the high school diploma, lasts for three years at the end of which he graduated and obtained the title of Doctor.

The Master Course, which can be accessed only with the degree, lasts two years at the end of which follows the Master and you get the title of Doctor of Science.

The Erasmus Mundus Master Course in Chemical Innovation and Regulation (EMMC ChIR) is a Joint Master course developed by the Consortium of Universities. These are the University of Algarve, the University of Barcelona, the University of Bologna and Heriot Watt University. The Universities in the Consortium have agreed on the following Quality Policy regarding the EMMC ChIR: The mission of the EMMC ChIR is to provide its students with the all tools and knowledge from the scientific, the regulatory and the economic point of view necessary to manage the risks of chemicals responsibly and to meet responsibilities over chemical legislation worldwide. ChIR stakeholders are any institution or individual concerned with the risks of chemical substances over humans and the environment, namely the European Chemicals Agency, the national chemicals regulation bodies, chemical industry companies, and the public in general. ChIR will continuously update its curriculum and structure looking towards the fulfillment of its stakeholders’ expectations by preparing professionals highly competent to deal with the challenges of chemical innovation and safe regulation of chemical substances. The vision of the EMMC ChIR is to become the reference in Higher Education for the regulation of chemical substances. The EMMC ChIR aspires to be a model of successful European cooperation, promoting scientific research to support regulations on new chemical substances. The EMMC ChIR will contribute to the competitiveness of European and non-European companies by compliance with international regulations on the use of chemical substances and through the development of new safer alternatives. The Universities of the consortium will implement a quality management system for the EMMC ChIR in order to pursue this vision and continuously enhance the quality of the joint master course and have established the following quality objectives: • to implement adequate internal quality assurance mechanisms at three different levels: lecture modules, programme and host institutions facilities; • to implement transparent external quality assurance mechanisms by the respective competent national authorities and to contribute to the development of international quality assurance mechanisms for transnational courses; • to collaborate with the national authorities and ENQA in establishing a common framework of reference for Quality Assurance. The Universities in the Consortium are totally committed to quality and will put forward all necessary and available resources for quality assurance. Modules are grouped into thematic fields: Design Industry Market and Social Assessment Regulation Transferrable Skills Students will be free of choosing their own Modules set, at least 30 Modules corresponding to 60 ECTS, provided that general learning outcomes of the Course are fulfilled and all constraints of the approved Study Plans of each Partner University are satisfied. However, possible Study paths will be suggested to students by the Program Management Team. Learning activities will be taught in a single University (the Host University) by teachers from all the Partners and by invited teachers from elsewhere. Students will stay in the Host University during the first year. The Host Universities will be: 1° Edition 2013/14 Universtity of Algarve (Faro, Portugal) 2° Edition 2014/15 University of Barcelona (Barcelona, Spain) 3° Edition 2015/16 University of Bologna (Bologna, Italy) 4° edition 2016/17 Universtity of Algarve (Faro, Portugal) 5° Edition 2017/18 University of Barcelona (Barcelona, Spain) Research and Thesis During the second year, students will move to a different Partner University (the Research Host University) for Research activity corresponding to at least 60 ECTS. Part of this period can also be spent at another Partner University to contribute to a joint project (max. 30 ECTS) or at an Associated Partner Institution (max 15 ECTS) Discussion of the thesis and proclamation will be held at the Research Host University. During the Course, the student must stay in at least two Countries of the European Union different from their living Country. Prospects ChIR graduates gain an in-depth knowledge in chemical design, industrial processes, marketing, risk assessment and chemicals regulations. The EMMC ChIR is designed to attend the needs of chemical companies, research centers and regulation bodies. It opens student’s perspectives for bright professional careers as risk assessment experts, regulatory affairs specialists, regulatory scientists, regulatory professionals, innovative chemical scientist. The EMMC ChIR is a second cycle degree that grants access to third cycle degrees in the fields covered by the course. In particular, it is an excellent step towards a doctorate in regulatory science and doctorate in innovative and sustainable chemistry.
