Introduction

As part of the reorganization of Bologna University approved in 2012, the School of Engineering and Architecture has formed out of three previous Faculties: Bologna’s Engineering Faculty, the Second Faculty of Engineering at Forlì, and the Cesena “Aldo Rossi” Faculty of Architecture. The multiple experience and knowledge accrued by these different places of origin now converge in one new School.

The School of Engineering and Architecture offers its students learning curricula resting on a solid scientific basis, with a clear leaning towards applied technology that combines the differing approaches of systems, design and analytical engineering. This covers the fields of architecture and industrial design, as well as the various fields of engineering: industrial, mechanical, ICT, environmental, civil, constructional, biomedical, aeronautical and space, chemical and biochemical, electric energy, electronic, telecommunications, automation, and management.

Besides these multi-disciplinary skills, students will develop qualities that will stand them in good professional stead: commitment, concentration, intellectual resilience, practice with group work, and a penchant for digging deep, learning properly and then delivering the fruits.

The School organizes its studies so as to combine a solid methodological and scientific training with preparation for a career; humanistic learning twins with practical building know-how.

The basic degree programmes aim to give students mastery of methods and general scientific contents, as well as specific occupational know-how. The second-cycle programmes are an advanced training geared to higher professional practice. In acquiring the statutory educational credits – each with its own skills – the student gains an academic qualification and professional training which will be snapped up by the job market – witness, the star employment rates of the School’s graduates.

The School also imparts a pronounced international slant to its programme catalogue. Students may choose Joint Programmes and Double Degrees in collaboration with foreign universities, while degree programme curricula may be completely taught in English. Students are urged to spend periods of study and gain credits on international mobility programmes in Europe and elsewhere in the world, profiting by internships and research grants designed to help them prepare or develop degree dissertations.

By way of baptism in the labour market, over 2,300 agreements have been struck with firms and institutes prepared to host the internships stipulated on the degree curriculum (as well as extra-curricular internships).

Aerospace Engineering is a four-semester programme with core and elective courses. From the second semester, students may take elective courses which are logically grouped in an Aeronautics track and in a Space track, but that can also be selected individually. To access the Master Degree course in Aerospace Engineering the student must have earned a Bachelor's (First cycle) degree, or another five-year laurea degree (Italian) or another equivalent qualification obtained abroad. The Master Degree course admits a planned number of students each year, in relation to the available resources. The number of admitted students and the selection methods are published yearly in the relative “Call for applications”. Admission to the restricted access degree programme is subject to demonstration of the required knowledge and skills, by passing the exam with a minimum score indicated in the “call for applications”. Students must also provide proof of knowledge of English language of at least B2 Level, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. If the aforementioned certification, issued by a “Centro Linguistico di Ateneo” (CLA) or an equivalent certifying entity, is missing, the AEROSPACE ENGINEERING Degree Programme Board can verify that the candidate's English language competence is at least sufficient for a correct understanding of the classes and for the examinations to be carried out in English. This entry requirement will be evaluated on the basis of the candidate's curriculum vitae and, if necessary, by means of an interview with a specifically nominated Board, so as to enable the student to enrol on the course anyhow. In that case, a certification of English language of at least B2 level has to be obtained anyway by the end of the first year of enrollment. Only nationals from the USA, U.K., Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Canada are exempt from the proof of English language proficiency requirement. Applicants who obtained a Bachelor's degree in one of the mentioned countries, or a Bachelor's degree taught in English are also exempt from the proof of English language proficiency requirement. Programme profile The 2nd cycle degree programme produces professionals with a high level of preparation and specialization, able to fill technical and management positions in working contexts which require specific skills in basic science and industrial engineering, with a specific focus in aerospace engineering. Graduates must be able to apply analytical tools, numerical simulation techniques and experimental laboratory methods. Professionally, graduates will be able to produce physical/mathematical models to analyse aircraft and spacecraft requirements and performance and the physical environment they move in. They may also study advanced methods for air traffic monitoring and control using information processing and telecommunication systems in aerospace environments. These learning outcomes are achieved through a learning programme which, based on a solid background in physics and mathematics is completed in this 2nd cycle degree programme by some specific course units, the acquisition of professional and operative skills in all specific disciplines of Aerospace Engineering, and in particular aerodynamics, flight mechanics, aerospace structures and materials, propulsion and aerospace systems. The course curriculum, including the preparation of the dissertation, leaves space for autonomous learning activities, including workshops, allowing students to develop strong skills in the planning, design, manufacturing and assembly of highly complex systems. 2nd cycle graduates will be able to operate professionally in production innovation and development, advanced design, planning and programming, management of complex systems, both as freelance or employed in manufacturing and service industries and in civil service. 2nd cycle graduates may find employment in aircraft and aerospace industries; public and private aerospace research and development institutions; air transport companies; air traffic control authorities; the air force and aeronautical sectors of other corps; manufacturing industries which require skills in aerodynamics and light structures. The Master Degree in Automation Engineering is a two-year programme fully delivered in English. The Degree provides students advanced competencies in many important fields of Automation, such as robust control, system theory, software for real time control, vision systems, mechanical systems, design of advanced automatic machines, diagnostic systems. Within this Master Degree Programme students have 2 possibilities: Master Degree in Automation Engineering for 2 years in Bologna; Double-Degree Master Programme with Tongji University (AlmaTong Programme). For these students, classes of the first year will be held in Bologna. Then, students will attend classes in Shanghai for a period of 3 semesters. Upon completion of their studies, including a final graduation project, they will obtain two Master degrees: “Laurea Magistrale in Automation Engineering / Ingegneria dell’automazione” from the University of Bologna; “Msc in Control Theory and Control Engineering” from Tongji University. Admission Requirements The admission to this programme is granted to applicants that comply, first, with the curriculum requirements, secondly with the necessary prior preparation and thirdly with the language requirements (section 1.3). If the curriculum requirements are not complied with, the access to the Second Cycle Degree in Automation Engineering/Ingegneria dell'Automazione is denied. If the curriculum requirements are complied with, the applicant's prior preparation has to be assessed. The admission is granted if all requirements are fulfilled. The procedures to verify curriculum requirements and prior preparation are listed below. Curriculum requirements To be admitted to the Second cycle Degree in Automation Engineering/Ingegneria dell'Automazione the applicant must hold a University degree of at least three years (or achieved through the acquisition of at least 180 ECTS –CFU), or another degree obtained abroad and recognized by the Automation Engineering Board as equivalent. Admission to the Second cycle Degree in Automation Engineering/Ingegneria dell'Automazione is reserved to: a) Students graduated from Italian first cycle courses (“Lauree”) of the “Information Engineering area” (area 8, as defined in the DM 270/04 and area 9, as in DM 509/99) or in the “Industrial Engineering area” (area 9 as in the DM 270/04 and area 10 as in DM 509/99) whose name contains “Ingegneria dell'Automazione” or “Ingegneria Meccatronica”. Italian first cycle courses included in this definition have adequate curricula. b) Students graduated from Italian first cycle courses of the “Information Engineering area” (area 8, as defined in the DM 270/04 and area 9, as in DM 509/99) or in the “Industrial Engineering area” (area 9, as in the DM 270/04 and area 10, as in DM 509/99) with a final mark of at least 110/110. c) Students graduated from Italian first cycle courses of the “Information Engineering area” (area 8, as defined in the DM 270/04 and area 9, as in DM 509/99) or in the “Industrial Engineering area” (area 9, as in the DM 270/04 and area 10, as in DM 509/99) with a final mark less than 110/110 but complying with the following requirements: - at least 6 CFU in the SSD ING-INF/04; - at least 12 CFU in the set of SSD: ING-IND/13, ING-IND/32, ING-INF/05. d) Students graduated from Italian first cycle courses complying with all the following requirements: - at least 30 CFU in the SSD MAT/02, MAT/03, MAT/05, MAT/06, MAT/07, MAT/08, FIS/01, FIS/03; - at least 6 CFU in the SSD ING-INF/04 - at least 12 CFU in the set of SSD: ING-IND/13, ING-IND/32, ING-INF/05. The same criteria of point d) shall also apply to those who hold a University degree obtained abroad and deemed appropriate by the Automation Engineering/Ingegneria dell'Automazione Board for which it is possible to convert the degree score to the Italian system, and to identify the scientific areas and the number of credits obtained in each sector. Otherwise, the career of the applicant shall be assessed by the Automation Engineering/Ingegneria dell'Automazione. In very exceptional cases, the Automation Engineering/Ingegneria dell'Automazione Board can assign differentiated didactic plans in compliance with the “Degree Programme Regulation” to those Students with particular previous academic curricula. Such differentiated didactic plans do not concern students who have the First cycle Degree in Ingegneria dell'Automazione acquired at University of Bologna. Language requirements Adequate proficiency in English (at least B2 level according to CEFR) is required for admission to the Second cycle Degree in Automation Engineering/Ingegneria dell'Automazione. Candidates submitting a certificate issued by a recognized institution (e.g. TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge Esol, ...) proving such knowledge are exempted from further assessment. Otherwise, English proficiency of the candidate is assessed by a Commission nominated by the Automation Engineering/Ingegneria dell'Automazione Board. Whenever English knowledge is not considered adequate, the Automation Engineering/Ingegneria dell'Automazione Board may require the Student to fill the gap before registering any exam of their second year. Expected learning outcomes The specific learning outcomes of the 2nd cycle degree programme in Automation Engineering aim to produce professional figures with a solid basic and specific background able to cover management, design and coordination roles in companies requiring knowledge of sizing and implementation of highly complex architectures, automatic and robotic systems, automation processes and plants which integrate computer components, measuring, transmission and actuation equipment. Therefore, they will have an in-depth knowledge of the specific subjects of this class, with particular attention to the fields of advanced design, innovation and development of production, planning and programming, management and organisation of complex systems. It follows that graduate automation engineers possess in-depth interdisciplinary knowledge of the automation, mechanical, computing, electronics and electro technical sectors. Graduates will possess the following skills: Inclination for advanced design, integrating mechanical, electric, computing and control aspects, for particularly complex automation systems and with high levels of innovation; Organisational skills even in complex industrial systems; In-depth knowledge of the automation sector. The computing facilities and laboratories available to students, and which are constantly being enhanced, provide the setting for students to practically apply the knowledge, working autonomously and in groups. Internships will also be available through the collaboration with many local companies with which the university has signed cooperation agreements. Moreover, students may obtain a dual degree: the 2nd cycle degree in Automation Engineering from the University of Bologna and an MSc in Control Theory and Control Engineering from Tongji University in Shanghai, China. A Masters degree in Chemical Engineering is key to professional success in several modern and innovative industrial sectors. Smart materials, sustainable processes for energy production, industrial biotechnologies, and advanced pharmaceutical applications are only some of the examples of sectors where the expertise of chemical engineers is sought and highly rewarded. Furthermore, the conventional world-players as the chemical and Oil&Gas field are facing a context of increasing innovation and internationalization, thus requiring global competences and higher qualifications of the chemical engineers recruited. The STEM (Sustainable Technologies and biotechnologies for Energy and Materials) international curriculum of the Masters in Chemical and Process Engineering was built to meet these needs. The course is a two-years Master “second cycle Degree” officially recognized under the “Bologna Process”, requiring the students to obtain 120 ECTS. The program is two years in duration and is divided into four terms. In the first year, courses are mainly oriented to address basic issues of the Master’s studies: advanced thermodynamics and transport phenomena, introduction to basic design, and introduction to industrial safety. In the second year, both compulsory and elective courses are offered on specialized topics, such as materials, energy and environmental processes and industrial biotechnologies. The program is entirely taught in English, and requires the student a proficient use of the English language. At the end of the program, a degree titled "Master in Chemical Engineering" (Laurea Magistrale in Ingegneria Chimica, Classe LM-22) is awarded and is valid under Italian law. A Dual Degree Agreement is active with Columbia University in the City of New York (USA). Applicants, upon completing successfully the program, will obtain both the Laurea Magistrale from Bologna University and the Master of Science in Chemical Engineering from Columbia University. The programme is intended to provide students with firm technical bases while nurturing decision-making and leadership potential. It prepares graduates to practice their profession at an advanced level and with a unique exposure to an international environment to better understand global issues of civil engineering. About the programme: Civil engineering All courses and activities are given in English. The master’s duration is two years (4 semesters). The core modules, common for all students, aim at consolidating fundamentals and improving modelling capabilities in the classical areas of Civil Engineering such as structural mechanics and engineering, hydraulics and hydrology, soil mechanics, road design and transportation. In the second year, students choose a curriculum amongst: Infrastructure design in river basins (Bologna) Structural engineering (Bologna) Off-shore engineering (Ravenna). About the curriculum: Infrastructure design in river basins The curriculum “Infrastructure Design in River Basins” focuses on the management of water resources and river basins in a human-impacted environment through: the analysis of the hydrological, geological, geomorphological and socio-economical behavior of the catchment area; the monitoring, understanding and management of surface water and ground water resources, keeping into consideration the impact and feedbacks of human interventions on these systems; the design and management of water systems and hydraulic structures, their characteristics and functioning in relation to other civil engineering infrastructures (such as transportation systems). Students will become able to make appropriate and critical use of methods, techniques and tools necessary for planning the integrated management of water resources and water systems in river basins, for designing engineering structures and infrastructures (aimed at water supply, drainage and defense from water-related risks), together with the accompanying maintenance and operational control practices. The first year of the programme will be delivered in Bologna, while the second year will be offered in Ravenna. Electricity is the most valuable energy and its availability is a precondition for the growth in developed countries as well as those in the developing world. It is well known that the standard of living of a country is directly related to the consumption of electricity. Almost everything that man uses requires electricity to operate: appliances, lighting systems, telecommunication systems, public and private transportation systems, cooling and heating, medical equipment for diagnosis and treatment, ... Applications are so many and accustomed to the use of electricity is such that it perceives the importance only when, for some unforeseen, it fails. The Electrical Engineers are the repository of scientific and technical knowledge pertaining to the production, transmission and use of electricity and of a multidisciplinary technical-scientific culture that makes them a particularly versatile professional figure. Employment opportunities are manifold, and the preparation acquired allows him/her to play key roles in the fields of industrial, technological and environmental engineering. For example, the Electrical Engineer manages large power grids, is responsible for the production of electricity from conventional as well as renewable energy, takes care of environment protection and energy saving, designs electrical systems, measurement instrumentations and drives for industrial automation and for electric traction, and he/she is engaged in nanotechnology research, electromagnetic compatibility, plasmas and superconductors. The demand for Electrical Engineers has always been very high, so that the new graduates in Electrical Engineering are not currently sufficient in number to meet the demand of the labor market. Admission requirements Curricular requirements To be able to profitably follow the Secondd Cycle Degree Programme in Electrical Engineering students must possess the following knowledge: - University level knowledge of Mathematics, Physics, Informatics and Electrotechnics - Knowledge of English language at least of level B1 for the Italian language curriculum and level B2 for the curriculum in English language. Admission to the Second Cycle Degree Programme is also subject to the possession of the following curricular requirements: 1. Assessment of knowledge and language skills The Second Cycle degree in Electrical Engineering is divided into the curricula Electric Power Engineering in Italian and Electrical Engineering in English. For access to the Second Cycle Degree in Electrical Engineering the assessment of the knowledge and skills compliant with English language level B1 is required. The knowledge and language skills of level B1 is considered accomplished for students in possession of the corresponding language certification. In the case of linguistic competence lower than B1 Level, the degree board can foresee that the student has to fill an early deficit, with anticipation of the prerequisites of the suitability B1 compared to the examinations of the second year. For access to the curriculum Electrical Engineering is expected the assessment of the knowledge and skills in English language level B2. The assessment of knowledge and language skills at level B2 is considered paid in respect of students in possession of the corresponding language certification. Otherwise, English proficiency of the candidate is assessed by a Commission nominated by the Degree Programme Board. Master goals ECST students, international program fully taught in English, will attain knowledge in the basic issues related to advanced micro-nano-electronic devices, solid-state sensors and biosensors, including reliability features. They will as well acquire skills in the modelling and design of digital and analog integrated circuits, advanced telecommunication systems, artificial intelligence and software engineering applications, automation systems and bioengineering. Learning activities ECST is a 120 credits, four-semester programme, consisting in core classes (60 credits), curriculum classes (18 credits), elective classes (12 credits), general-culture classes (9 credits) and a master thesis (21 credits). The core classes are mainly concentrated in the first year and aim to consolidate basic knowledge. During their second-year students can choose their curriculum classes mostly in the field of electronics and telecommunications with options in automation and robotics, computers and information processing, and bioengineering. The classes are organized with lectures, practice, design and laboratory activities. Career opportunities ECST graduates will be able to work in companies whose core business is the design and/or manufacturing of devices, equipment, systems, and infrastructures of electronic and optoelectronic type, including sensor systems, advanced telecommunication systems, applications of artificial intelligence and software engineering. Moreover, they will be able to effectively contribute to all working activities employing electronic technologies or infrastructures for signal processing in the civil construction, industrial and information fields, within public or private research Institutes, public Agencies, or Academia. The HBR (Historic Building Rehabilitation) international curriculum of the Masters in Engineering of Building Processes and Systems was built to meet the needs of new professionals, able to integrate the functions traditionally found within the process, by focusing on the critical analysis of the historical heritage, the diagnosis of conservation conditions, the definition of procedures and techniques for consolidation and rehabilitation of the artefacts, by applying effective methods and solutions, compatible with the protection of the heritage characters. The innovation in both technical and organizational structure is increasing the complexity of the building process. The emergence of more stringent requirements and the intense penetration of new materials and technologies take special relevance in consolidation, recovery and rehabilitation of historic buildings, which is a market segment in steady expansion. The growing cultural value attributed to the existing building and the economic and environmental benefits associated with its conservation are expanding this market, whose further development fuels a demand for high-profile skills, able to meet its specific characteristics and constraints. The HBR (Historic Building Rehabilitation) international curriculum of the Masters in Engineering of Building Processes and Systems was built to meet these needs of new professionals, able to integrate the functions traditionally found within the process, by focusing on the critical analysis of the historical heritage, the diagnosis of conservation conditions, the definition of procedures and techniques for consolidation and rehabilitation of the artefacts, by applying effective methods and solutions, compatible with the protection of the heritage characters. The course is a two-years Master “second cycle Degree” requiring the students to obtain 120 ECTS. The program is two years in duration and is divided into four terms. In the first year, courses are mainly oriented to address basic issues of the Master’s studies: History of Italian and European Architecture; Conservation Theory of Historic Buildings and Heritage Conservation; Survey of Historic Buildings, Materials and Technologies for Historic Buildings; Advanced Structural Mechanics and Mechanics of Historic Masonry and Wood Structures. Additionally, a Design Project course aims at training the students in applying to a case-study the acquired knowledge. In the second year, both compulsory and elective courses are offered on specialized topics, such as Structural Diagnostics, Seismic Assessment and Rehabilitation; Geotechnical Engineering for the Preservation of Historic Buildings; Mineralogical and Petrographical Characterization of Natural and Artificial Stone Materials. The program is entirely taught in English, and requires the student a proficient use of the English language. At the end of the program, a degree titled "Master in Engineering of building processes and Systems" (Laurea Magistrale in Ingegneria dei Processi e dei Sistemi edilizi, Classe LM-24) is awarded and is valid under Italian law. The title enables graduates to take the exam for Professional Engineer qualification (Sector: Civil and Environmental) HBR Master students have the opportunity to obtain a double degree: from the University of Bologna ( MSc in Engineering of Building Processes and Systems) and from the Tongji University, Shanghai, China (MSc in Architecture and Civil Engineering) . The ERE programme An international Master’s Degree Programme in “Earth Resources Engineering - ERE” (“Laurea Magistrale” according to the Italian regulation), is offered by ALMA MATER STUDIORUM – University of Bologna. According to the Bologna process, the Laurea Magistrale is equivalent to a Master of Science. The program is open to students of any Nationality. The central theme of ERE is the conscientious stewardship of our finite natural resources, namely minerals, fuels, energy, water, and land. Students taking ERE Programme will attain a broad background in environmental engineering and earth resources covering water resources, pollution prevention, energy, resource economics, recycling, waste and biowaste valorization, alternative and renewable raw materials, reclamation, and health. The main goal of the Master’s degree is to educate professionals with the necessary in-depth scientific and technical knowledge to be successful in the field of environmental engineering and in a multi-cultural educational environment. The programme is intended to prepare students with firm technical bases while nurturing decision-making and leadership potential. Master goals Telecommunications engineering is an international program fully-taught in English through which, on the one hand, students will acquire a deep knowledge of the four macro-layer of telecommunications: electromagnetism, signal and systems, networks, application and services; on the other hand, they will obtain a solid background in basic related fields (such as electrical circuits and devices, computer science and mathematics). Students will be supported in developing an appropriate attitude towards analytical and designing methodologies, along with organizational and management skills. Career opportunities Nowadays telecommunications are pervasive, applying to all products of modern life. A telecommunication engineer is able to design, implement and manage telecommunication devices, systems, networks and services. Moreover, a solid background in telecommunications can be very helpful in many other jobs and professional positions: about 50% of the telecommunications engineers who graduated from the University of Bologna find a job in companies not belonging to the field of telecommunications. Learning activities Learning activities are based on the established tradition of telecommunications engineering studies in Bologna: they span from signal propagation in both radio and optical media to communication theory, networks, applications and services, including lectures, laboratory activities and seminars. The course value is strengthened by connections with numerous national and regional industrial partners, resulting in opportunities as internships and student-oriented presentations. Students will be able to benefit from active cooperation at the international level as well as spending a period abroad, broadening his/her knowledge and personal background. Admission Requirements Admission to the 2nd cycle degree programme is conditional to meeting curricular requirements and secondly on assessing student personal competencies and skills. Candidates not meeting curricular requirements will not be admitted to the 2nd cycle degree programme. Those meeting them will be required to sit an entrance exam to assess their personal competencies and skills. Candidates passing the entrance exam will be admitted to the 2nd cycle degree programme.
