Introduction

Established in 1868 as the first Business School in Italy, Ca’ Foscari University of Venice is a modern university, which encompass a vast and varied array of undergraduate and graduate degrees, in addition to numerous PhD programmes and a wide selection of executive courses.

The University teaches approximately 20.000 students and covers four main subject areas: Economics, Foreign Languages and Literatures, Humanities and Sciences.

The university is divided into 8 Departments and 6 Interdepartmental Schools, responsible for research and teaching activities of Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree Programmes. Three university structures exist alongside these:

  • Ca' Foscari Graduate School, which coordinates Research Doctorates (PhDs);
  • Ca’ Foscari Challenge School, which organises Professional Master’s Programmes (1st and 2nd level) and other opportunities for executive education;
  • Ca’ Foscari School for International Education, which promotes intensive summer and autumn courses, orientation programmes, foundation year programmes and other extracurricular activities for Italian and international students.

Ca Foscari assists students during their entire University career by offering a range of loans, grants and bursaries through its Financial Aid Office. Tailor-made support is available to international students, students who work and students with disabilities. This MSc programme takes two years of full-time study, covering a wide spectrum of fields in Computer Science and Information Technology. It is suitable for students with diverse academic backgrounds, such as computer science, engineering, statistics, mathematics and related disciplines. The programme has been awarded with the GRIN 2015 Quality Label. GRIN is an Italian association that aims at promoting research and education in Computer Science. The programme The programme unfolds into three semesters of full-time lectures and lab experience. During the last semester, students work on a individual project and dissertation, supervised by a department member. The programme is organized around two curricula, which include both compulsory and elective courses, from which students have to build their study plan for qualification. The two curricula, which include a first semester of common courses on advanced topics in computer science and mathematics, are the following: Data Management and Analytics (DMA) This curriculum is designed to train a new generation of professionals specialized on data collection and processing. The study program of this curriculum allows students to acquire skills and key competences on fields such as machine learning and artificial intelligence, advanced databases and information retrieval, statistics, data mining and visualization, cloud, distributed and parallel computing. Software Dependability and Cyber Security (SDCS) The curriculum aims at training specialists in software engineering with advanced skills in software correctness verification, in design of secure and privacy aware systems, and their performance evaluation. The study programme thus focuses on the field of system modelling, software correctness, scalability and performance evaluation and, finally, on the different aspects of cyber security. The final project The students will work intensively on a topic of her/his choice, while interacting on regular meetings with the project supervisor. The project can consist in the development of an innovative software, or the investigation and analysis of existing designs and solutions; the topic can be any area of computer science or statistics. The University of Venice offers a MSc (Master of Science/Laurea Magistrale) degree in "Environmental Sciences" which includes three available curricula, one of which is fully taught in English (Global Environmental Change programme). The Msc programme in Enviromental Sciences also offers the possibility of getting a Joint Master's Degree in Sustainable Development. The study plans The programme unfolds into three semesters of full-time lectures and lab experience. The last semester is dedicated to the development of individual projects and of the thesis, supervised by a department member. Each study plan is organized around a set of core courses, two elected activities and a final examination, in which the candidates will defend their thesis. The Global Environmental Change Programme, fully taught in English, provides a thorough understanding of Earth System dynamics, through a holistic and systemic approach, which also takes into account the social and economic systems. Several disciplines are covered, including: climatology, past and recent climate history, tools for predicting changes in climate, analysis and forecasting of the impacts of climate change on the environmentas well on human society and welfare, adaptation and mitigation strategies, integrated assessment of global change drivers. The final work The final work (thesis) is the culmination of the programme. The students will work intensively on a topic of their choice, while interacting on regular meetings with the project supervisor. In several cases these projects lead to a PhD career.
