University of Augsburg

The University of Augsburg was founded in 1970 and is one of the modern universities in Bavaria. With approximately 19,000 students and an academic staff of about 1,200, it offers a wide range of academic programmes in natural sciences, business, law, arts, and humanities.

In its research, the University of Augsburg connects local with global perspectives centered on five focus areas: Transnational Studies, Health Sciences, Resource Management, Materials Science and Applied Computer Science. In addition, top-level research is being done in all disciplines represented at the university.

The University of Augsburg is situated on a landscaped campus to the south of the city of Augsburg, easily reached both by road and by public transport. Please do not hesitate to contact us – we look forward to welcoming you here!

Studying and living on campus

The University of Augsburg campus is one of the most congenial places to study in Germany. Situated near the city centre of Augsburg, the campus is spacious architecturally appealing, blended into a landscaped park with a lake, fountains and sculptures by contemporary artists.

Ideal conditions for studying

If it takes more than 15 minutes to get to the university from the main train station or Königsplatz, the central bus and tram stop, then something has gone wrong somewhere. Trams leave Königsplatz every five minutes and stop right in the middle of the campus. The university registration fee includes a „Semester Ticket” that gives students free travel on public transport within Augsburg.

Living in Augsburg is almost as cheap: even in the charming city centre, the rents are affordable. In addition, there are more than 2000 rooms and apartments available in the university dormitories.

Seven faculties

The University of Augsburg provides the ideal conditions for completing a degree programme successfully and within a reasonable time frame.

Seven faculties have been established, each with longterm strategies for development and using the most up-to-date facilities available:

  • Faculty of Business Administration and Economics (founded 1970)
  • Faculty of Law (founded 1971)
  • Faculty of Theology (founded 1971)
  • Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences (founded 1972)
  • Faculty of Philology and History (founded 1972)
  • Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (founded 1981) and
  • Faculty of Applied Computer Science (founded 2003).

The Master‘s Program (M.Sc.) in Materials Science at Augsburg University is an interdisciplinary tuition-free study program connecting several aspects of physics, chemistry, and methods for characterization and processing of materials. [+]

Materials Science at Augsburg University is an interdisciplinary tuition-free study program connecting several aspects of physics, chemistry, and methods for characterization and processing of materials. The Master program in Materials Science deepens the scientific expertise of your previous education. It aims at understanding material properties and interactions between materials with particular regard to application-oriented research in science and technology. In Augsburg, we put a strong emphasis on natural sciences (rather than mechanical engineering) in materials science, aiming to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the chemical, physical and functional properties of materials. The International Master in Materials Science is a full-time program and intended to be completed in four semesters (120 ECTS credits). Building on experience from the Bachelor’s level, knowledge of materials science is deepened and enhanced, finishing with the completion of a Master thesis and an associated thesis defense. All classes are taught entirely in the English language. Knowledge of German is not required, however, the university offers free German language courses. The Materials Science program offers students a broad variety of elective courses to specialize in fields like spintronics, porous or optical materials, low temperature physics, nanostructures, and many more. Furthermore, through method courses your theoretical knowledge is complemented by practical lab experience using state of the art research facilities. Augsburg is a lively university town with about 25.000 students out of 270.000 inhabitants. It is located in Southern Bavaria, one of the federal states of Germany, at about 60 km from the city of Munich and about 100 km from the Alps. The city of Augsburg offers a long cultural history dating back to the first Roman settlements more than 2000 years ago and is located between two rivers, Lech and Wertach, providing plenty of recreational green areas with forests, hills, and freshwater lakes. What scientific background do you expect? For admission to the Master program in Materials Science, a Bachelor’s degree in the fields of materials science, physics, chemistry, or materials science and engineering is required. A degree in a related discipline might be deemed equivalent by the examination board, subject to evaluation of the documents submitted by the applicant. All applicants have to submit proof of having obtained at least an equivalent of 16 ECTS credits in each of the following subjects: (1) Materials Science, (2) Physics, (3) Chemistry. The following list gives an overview of the curriculum of your fellow students who graduated from Augsburg University: Materials Science (42 CP) Introductory knowledge on all classes of materials: e.g. crystal structure, thermodynamics, properties and defects, solid state analytics Physics (54 CP) Experimental Physics (Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Electodynamics, Optics, Atomic and Molecular Physics, Solid State Physics), Theoretical Physics (Basic Quantum Mechanics, Thermodynamics) Chemistry (44 CP) General and Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Solid State Chemistry, Chemical Lab Practice Mathematics (16 CP) Linear Algebra, Fundamental Calculus, Differential Equations, Complex Analysis Your background will be compared with this list. Which level in English is required and which certificates do you accept? Applicants whose first language is not English must provide proof of having obtained level B2 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Currently, accepted equivalences to B2 in terms of internationally recognized test methods (e.g. TOEFL, IELTS) are as follows: - TOEFL TOEFL (paper-based) score of at least 550 or - TOEFL TOEFL (computer-based) score of at least 213 or - TOEFL TOEFL (internet-based) score of at least 80 or - IELTS-Overall Band Score of at least 6.5 (out of 9) These limits are strict!
