The Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig / University of Art is a university with strong international focus and an emphasis on both art and research. With around 1,200 students in Fine Arts, Design, Aesthetics & Art History and Media Studies, the Braunschweig University of Art is one of the largest art academies in Europe. Our students come from 39 states all over the world and make up 12,7 % of the student body.
Dating back to 1842, the HBK is proud of its traditions. Yet at the same time, it is looking forward and orientating itself for the future. We encourage an open and productive exchange between our students, teachers, and professors in all areas of study. Our goal is to combine artistic work, creativity, and research alongside varied curriculums to impart key qualifications that are essential for many jobs today: the ability to think innovatively and the ability to understand, construct, and manage complex problems.
The HBK Braunschweig offers a large number of laboratories and workshops where the students can gain practical experience with the assistance of professional staff members. The Library gives you access to more than 120,000 items pertaining to all subjects taught at the University; most of them can be borrowed. Collections are particularly strong in modern, contemporary art and design.
The Braunschweig University of Art combines three domains under one roof:
- fine arts
- theory of art and media.
Each discipline has its specific methods and practices in research – oscillating between the classical academic research in the theory of art and media, practice based research in communication and industrial design, and artistic research in the fine arts.
