Brandenburgische Technische Universität - Cottbus - Senftenberg

Introduction

A Fresh Start for BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg

With its 10,000 students, the BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg is the second largest university and the only technical university in the state of Brandenburg. Its degree programmes are highly regarded within Germany and worldwide. Key to this success are the many collaborations in both teaching and research that BTU actively pursues not only with other universities and research institutions but also with local small and medium-sized companies as well as large international organisations and enterprises.

The new university was born in 2013 out of a merger of the former BTU Cottbus and the Lausitz University of Applied Sciences and has campuses in Cottbus, Cottbus-Sachsendorf, and Senftenberg.

One Common Roof for Differing Academic Profiles

The Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg combines the differing academic profiles of application-oriented and research-oriented bachelor and master programmes in one organizational framework. Together with professional training, postgraduate research studies, and Ph.D. programmes, the resulting wealth of educational paths can be shaped according to individual preferences and potential. BTU offers small study groups in a personal atmosphere, high teacher-student ratios, practice-oriented teaching, and modern buildings and research facilities, which help to create an excellent learning environment. BTU graduates acquire top qualifications for demanding careers in industry and academia.

Continuity and Development of Study Programmes

The existing degree programmes of the two former institutions, BTU Cottbus and the Lausitz University of Applied Sciences Senftenberg, will continue in the near future. Students who are enroled in any of those programmes will be able to finish their studies as members of the new university. The existing structure of faculties and scientific institutions, with all their staff members, are now part of the new university.

By the end of the year 2014, a concept for future degree programmes, research fields and the internal organisation of faculties and schools will be developed. The planned reforms aim towards emphasizing international and multidisciplinary programmes that respond to new demands and challenges in industry and society. These new programmes will be in line with the situations and expectations of today's students and will provide even better research opportunities. During this process of reinventing the university, the existing degree programmes will continue without interruption.

New Organisation and Profile

The BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg will refocus its research and teaching efforts in order to create a specific interdisciplinary research profile and its own didactic footprint, taking the profiles of other universities in Brandenburg and Germany into account. The degree programmes in engineering, natural sciences and economics on the three BTU campuses will be consolidated; new programmes, for instance in the field of health care in Senftenberg, are being developed and will connect to existing programmes. Schools for undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate programmes will be set up as effective organisational means to support teaching.

Excellence in Research

At a technical university, excellent teaching is directly connected with excellent research and successful knowledge and technology transfer into society and industry. Building on the success of the two previous institutions with their broad ranges of research projects in all fields, the existing large interdisciplinary research projects and long-term programmes will be bundled and coordinated in specific research centres. This will foster national and international cooperation, create an attractive environment for young researchers, and help to increase the amount of external funding for the university.
