ECAM Lyon

Introduction

ECAM LYON

Over 100 years of history

The school was founded in Reims by the Lasallian Brothers in 1900 and moved to Lyon in 1946. It has been under the administration of the ECAM Foundation and recognized as a Public Service Provider since 1977. Proud of its rich heritage, ECAM Lyon continues to grow and now looks towards the future.

ECAM Lyon Values

At ECAM Lyon we are dedicated to preserving our core values: attention to others, respect, solidarity and commitment. All ECAM staff and engineers are proud ambassadors of this philosophy, making sure that it is shared with and passed on to all incoming students.

Educational Approach

We believe in an open and supportive approach to learning. Students work alongside our experienced tutors to create personalized learning plans. This allows each of our student engineers to thrive in their own individual training projects.

Business Links

ECAM Lyon works closely with local companies and industries: professional speakers, visits to industrial sites, partnerships, sponsorships, and company events (Fest'Innov - an innovation contest, round table meetings, employment workshops, mentoring etc.).

Lyon, City of Science and Culture

Enrolling at ECAM Lyon means moving to a dynamic and international city rich with science and culture. Lyon is the third biggest city in France and in terms of quality of life amongst the most attractive in Europe. Its location is ideal: Two hours from both Paris and the Mediterranean Sea, it lies close to the Alps and is cradled between two rivers, the Rhône and the Saône. Cultural resources are rich and diverse: theatres, museums, concert venues and numerous festivals, including the annual Festival of Lights. The city also stands out for its economic diversity: 40,000 companies and 1,500 policy-making centres across a range of competitive sectors.

ECAM Lyon, more than just a school

Our campus offers 20 clubs and associations, a hall of residence and numerous facilities for our students’ enjoyment: gym, restaurant, music room, relaxation room etc.

THE ECAM SPIRIT: AN EDUCATION BASED ON STRONG VALUES.

For more than a century, the ECAM spirit has grown in strength, year after year, from the founding values of the school. These values are all shared by the lecturers, the students, our graduate engineers, the heads and the Foundation, which is a recognized non-profit making association. The ECAM Spirit means guiding and assisting all students, step by step, along their journey to become engineers. This ECAM identity begins from admission and continues to develop throughout the years of training thanks to the quality of teaching and the values we share.

PEDAGOGICAL VALUES AT THE HEART OF OUR TRAINING:

  • Welcoming and guiding the student engineers,
  • Autonomy and personal judgment, specific skills which are strongly developed during training,
  • Training in science and techniques, theory and practice in equal proportions,
  • Teaching results have been proved successful as confirmed by feedback from industry partners.

ECAM ENGINEERS ARE RECOGNIZED NOT ONLY FOR THEIR SCIENTIFIC ABILITY BUT ALSO FOR THEIR INNOVATIVE SKILLS AND QUALITIES IN LEADERSHIP AND HUMAN RELATIONS.

A SERIOUS APPROACH TO WORK AND CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT

The ECAM spirit also encompasses the notion of success based on merit and hard work. It is for this reason that the school adheres to the pedagogical choice of regular assessment of acquired skills and competences. ECAM engineers approve of this rigorous approach in the learning process, which continues to be an asset when facing challenging situations during their careers.

MODESTY AND SOLIDARITY ARE ESSENTIAL THROUGHOUT TRAINING.

DEVELOPING PERSONAL QUALITIES

Our future success depends on the quality of the young men and women that we train. It is a priority of the school to turn out the best in terms of pedagogical training but also in terms of human qualities. Therefore, beyond the scientific skills required by any engineer, the school aims to instill human qualities and open-mindedness to meet the expectations of industry today.

According to school ethics, each student is considered as a unique human being, capable of adapting in a group. Examinations, small-group projects, or pair work; everything is done to encourage the personal development of each student and his integration within the year group. The students are encouraged and assisted in their personal commitments or through community activities.

ECAM LYON VALUES THE POWERS OF LISTENING AND AWARENESS OF OTHERS.

A FAMILY SPIRIT: ACTIVE AND FORWARD THINKING

With more than 6000 engineers trained since the founding of the school, solidarity and a feeling of belonging to the ECAM family is transmitted from one year group to the next. The link between ECAM engineers and new student engineers is ensured by a mentoring system. In each year group an individual student has the responsibility for a student in a lower year group to help and advise. ECAM engineers are encouraged to pass on their knowledge. Conferences, debates and days to meet mentors are organised to ensure this commitment.

EVOLUTION AND ADAPTATION TO THE ECONOMIC WORLD

ECAM engineers are at the heart of new technologies. Since the graduation of the first 9 engineers in 1903, ECAM Lyon has adapted its teaching to anticipate the evolutions in the economic world around us to become a leading engineering school. ECAM Lyon invests in academic research to face the challenges of the future.

A CONSTANT MOTIVATION OF THE SCHOOL IS TO BE AT THE LEADING EDGE OF SCIENTIFIC INNOVATION.

ECAM Lyon’s Research Centre

SINCE 2007, ECAM LYON HAS STRUCTURED AND DEVELOPED ITS RESEARCH ACTIVITIES The research centre is organized around two main topics: Energy Efficiency projects and microstructural modification of materials. The link between training and research is essential and profitable for both students and teachers alike in strengthening their knowledge and sharing their research progress. The research centre wishes to involve more students in their programme and therefore works very closely with the studies department so that they can offer a full and coherent programme.

SHARING RESEARCH PROGRAMMES WITH OTHER SCHOOLS

In order to share the research programme with other higher education establishments, ECAM Lyon has signed an agreement for a Master’s in Research with “INSA Lyon” and “Arts et Métiers Paris-Tech Cluny”.

IN 2012, NEW RESEARCH CENTRE

In 2012, ECAM Lyon created a research centre headed by Christophe CHANGENET, graduate from Higher Engineer School of Marseille (ESIM), doctorate (PhD) in Mechanical Engineering from INSA Lyon and accredited to supervise research.

The R&D department works in a transversal way with the other training departments of the school and focuses its research activities on subjects concerned by dealing with industry and socio-economic development programmes.
