JSBE is the first University in the whole of Scandinavia offering a full master's and doctoral programme in Corporate Environmental Management since 1995.

The dynamic and internationally-oriented Jyväskylä University School of Business and Economics (JSBE) is one of the seven faculties at the University of Jyväskylä. JSBE has offered degree programmes in the fields of economics and business since 1967.

As part of an internationally renowned research university, JSBE strives for excellence in research and education in the key fields of business and economics. Around 120 faculty and staff members, including 23 professors, work at JSBE. We serve 1100 degree students, 170 doctoral students, and 200 MBA students.

Full-Service Business School

We are a full-service business school with Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degree education and MBA Executive Education. Around 150 Master's and 15 Doctoral degrees are awarded each year at JSBE. Our main areas of education include accounting, economics, entrepreneurship, management and leadership, and marketing. Education offered at JSBE is based on up-to-date research conducted by the faculty.

The quality of education at JSBE is internationally recognised: the Association of MBAs (AMBA) has awarded the Avance MBA programme with a five-year accreditation, which places the programme among top executive programmes globally. JSBE is also a member of the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). The quality system of the University of Jyväskylä has received the FINHEEC quality label from the Finnish Higher Education Evaluation Council (FINHEEC).

JSBE offers several programmes taught in English. Our two international Master’s degree programmes are offered in the fields of Corporate Environmental Management (CEM) and International Business and Entrepreneurship (IBE), and our doctoral programmes are taught exclusively in English. Exchange students can take courses from our non-degree course programme in English, which is also open for Finnish and international degree students.

JSBE has specialised expertise in environmental and social issues connected to business. We were the first business school in Scandinavia to offer a full Master's and Doctoral programme in Corporate Environmental Management (since 1995). JSBE has been repeatedly recognised for our outstanding leadership in training future business decision makers in environmental management skills in the global Beyond Grey Pinstripes survey. Environmental and social issues are an integral part also in the strategic focus areas of JSBE.

Innovative research

Research at JSBE focuses on the behaviour of individuals, businesses and organisations in order to understand their functions as part of society. In all our disciplines, the emphasis is particularly on empirical research on managerial-relevant questions and policy-relevant questions.

Our research is organised through disciplines and research groups. The JSBE research groups overlap discipline boundaries. Recently, the research groups focusing on spatial labour market analysis and responsible leadership have been particularly pronounced and recognised.

Active cooperation

JSBE actively participates in national and international cooperation networks in the areas of education and research. We maintain strong links to the surrounding community by promoting our latest research results and by educating academic experts, leaders and entrepreneurs to serve society.

JSBE has partner institutions all over the world, and participates in several student exchange programmes, such as FIRST, ISEP, Erasmus and the Norek network. In addition, the mobility of teachers and other staff is actively promoted. JSBE also regularly receives international visiting lecturers to teach on all levels of education.

Master's Degree Programme in Banking and International Finance (BIF)

The BIF programme provides an interdisciplinary degree and a strong quantitatively oriented background for the students to serve as professionals especially in financial markets, banking and other duties in the fields of economics and finance requiring highly analytical performance. [+]

Study objectives The BIF programme provides an interdisciplinary degree and a strong quantitatively oriented background for the students to serve as professionals especially in financial markets, banking and other duties in the fields of economics and finance requiring highly analytical performance. Study contents The curriculum of the programme contains courses in core themes of economics, finance, and financial accounting. Structure of the programme and course descriptions are available here. Tuition fees Tuition fees will be introduced only for non-EU/EEA students in Finland from August 2017 onwards. The fees will concern non-EU/EEA degree students who start their studies in English-taught Master's degree programmes in August 2017 or after that at the University of Jyväskylä. Qualification After graduation students are awarded the title Master of Science (Economics and Business Administration). Postgraduate study opportunities Completing the BIF programme gives graduates the possibility to apply for doctoral studies for example in the doctoral program of the Graduate School of Finance, or after completing some advanced level courses in economics outside the curriculum of the BIF programme, also in the Finnish Doctoral Program in Economics. Master's Degree Programme in Corporate Environmental Management (CEM)

The CEM Master’s Programme is a sustainability programme with an environmental focus. It offers its graduates an integrated and interdisciplinary approach to environmental issues preparing the graduates to tackle these complex issues in working life. [+]

Study objectives Do you want to contribute in making business more sustainable? Are you interested in finding sustainability solutions for businesses and organisations? Do you want to be part of climate change mitigation? The Corporate Environmental Management Master’s Programme (CEM) enhances understanding and provides expertise on these issues and more. The CEM Master’s Programme is a sustainability programme with an environmental focus. It offers its graduates an integrated and interdisciplinary approach to environmental issues preparing the graduates to tackle these complex issues in working life. The international learning environment provides skills for identifying and managing environmental impacts; promoting environmental sustainability in business; and innovating new business solutions and sustainable business models. Jyväskylä was the first university in in the Nordic region to offer a complete master's and doctoral programme in Corporate Environmental Management. Training in CEM was launched in 1995 and the programme has been an international master’s degree programme since 2003. Jyväskylä University School of Business and Economics has been proactive in integrating corporate environmental management in its curriculum, research, and other activities. Our education has therefore been internationally acknowledged by the World Resource Institute in 2001 and the Aspen Institute in 2005-2011. Study contents The CEM-programme offers courses in 3 different focus areas: 1. Identification of environmental impacts in organisational operations 2. Management of environmental impacts of organisational operations 3. Promote environmental sustainability in business and innovate new business solutions and sustainable business models. The students with a business studies background will study basic courses in environmental sciences and the students with an environmental background (e.g. environmental engineering) will study basic business studies as their minor. The programme incorporates also courses with working-life relevance and has an extensive research component through the Master’s thesis and related courses. Primarily our applicants have either a business background or natural sciences background (eg. environmental engineering), but we do also accept applicants from other fields provided that their motivation is well-explained. Final project At the end of the studies students should write a Master's thesis. On successful completion of the Master's thesis, students will be able to: successfully complete an individual academic research project; identify problems related to corporate environmental management, and define and justify research problems for their own Master’s thesis; form a theoretical framework for an academic study; identify and justify the choice of the research methods of their own Master’s thesis; analyse and evaluate research results; make theoretical and practical conclusions based on research results; produce an academic research report. Career opportunities Graduates from the Master's Degree Programme in Corporate Environmental Management can work either in the public sector in public administration, municipalities, towns or environment centers, or in the private sector in companies. In addition, national and international non-governmental and other organisations are potential employers. Job titles can be for example:sustainability expert/specialist/analyst, environmental manager/expert, sustainability project manager, sales and sustainability specialist, corporate responsibility reporting specialist, project coordinator, sustainability and biofuels expert, climate and energy consultant, energy trader, researcher; and entrepreneur.The graduates can also work in the field of environmental-related marketing, accounting, entrepreneurship, reporting and communications based on their own interests. Internationalization The Master's Degree Programme in Corporate Environmental Management is an international programme with students from all over the world. Students are encouraged to apply to international internships and the Jyväskylä University School of Business and Economics offers possibilities for student exchange internationally. The Master’s Programme in Digital Marketing and Corporate Communication at the Jyväskylä University School of Business and Economics (JSBE) educates professionals of digital marketing and corporate communications for the needs of both nonprofit sector and private sector. We combine the most relevant aspects of digital business, marketing, and corporate communications with the latest academic research conducted in the field. Graduation from the programme gives in-depth knowledge and skills to plan and execute strategic and tactical activities in managerial and expert positions related to marketing, sales, and corporate communication in today’s digitalized society. The programme is being taught by academics working in the Digital Marketing and Communication research group at JSBE and both national and international practitioners. Finland is among the leading countries in the world in terms of how organizations and inhabitants use information and communications technology (ICT). For example, almost everyone in Finland uses online banking and owns a smartphone. We also have the lowest mobile data prices in the whole world. Final project The topic of the Master’s thesis is related to the digital marketing and communication research group’s focus areas. The topic can be either chosen independently, or given by the programme instructors. Along the Master’s thesis process, you will take part in a thesis seminar. In the seminar you will present your own research plan and hear about other students' progress. Your thesis supervisor will guide and support you throughout the thesis process. While writing your Master’s thesis, you will learn about independent information retrieval, critical evaluation of information, as well as the generation and application of new knowledge. After completing your Master's thesis you have acquired many generic skills related to working life, such as problem-solving skills, project management skills, and self-study and self-management skills. Experts from businesses will provide a number of visitor lectures on various courses and collaborate both in student work (group work, case studies etc.) as well as faculty research (research projects, research visits etc.). Integrating practitioners’ input into the programme improves its practical relevance and provides students with networking opportunities. Research focus The master’s programme is linked with the Digital Marketing and Communication (DMC) research group. The group consists of academic and industry award winning faculty and focuses on the effects of digitalization on customers, stakeholders, businesses and societies in close collaboration with industry partners. The group attempts to add knowledge on the use of digital and social media in business and corporate communication, as well as describe their intangible and tangible contribution to value creation. Further, the group focuses on the effectiveness of digital communication and marketing, and develops their measurement practices. Recent projects have dealt with digital marketing communications in industrial companies, transparency of sponsored content and SMEs responses to the changing marketing communications landscape. Current projects examine digital customer experience in the contexts of retailing, online shopping, mobile banking and other mobile services. The objective of the group is to contribute to the growing discussion in marketing theory dealing with the impacts of digital and social media on customer engagement, customer experience management, marketing communications, corporate communications, value creation, business-to-business marketing and marketing strategy. Study objectives After completing the JSBE Master’s Degree Programme in International Business and Entrepreneurship , graduates will be ready to work in demanding managerial posts in international companies, as management consultants, or as entrepreneurs in their own businesses. Whichever path is envisaged, the programme will prepare graduates so that they have an entrepreneurial and strategic mindset, with solid analytical skills. The programme is a generalist programme with a comprehensive perspective. IBE provides students with competences that are applicable in different sectors of the economy, different types of jobs, and different environments. Study contents A deep understanding of global economy is an essential part of IBE. The forward-looking programme combines the essential contents of international business, entrepreneurship, and strategy. In addition to courses in entrepreneurship, international business, and strategy, there are courses of human resource management, technology management, marketing, accounting, finance, and economy in the programme. Optional courses allow the students to dive deeply into the areas of their professional interests. IBE students may take as many optional courses as they choose at other faculties at the University of Jyväskylä. This provides the students with a wide variety of options. Final project Master’s thesis 35 ECTS and Master’s seminar 3 ECTS. Career opportunities Managerial posts, management consultants, entrepreneurs among others. Qualification After graduation students are awarded the title Master of Science (Economics and Business Administration). Internationalization Students are predominantly international. The students are encouraged to gain international experience. They have an opportunity for an international professional training period in international enterprises.
