Renmin University of China, School of International Studies

Introduction

The School of International Studies (SIS), Renmin University of China, is one of the earliest institutes engaging in the teaching and researches of political science and international affairs. With enduring efforts made by generations of scholars in the past sixty years, the School has built strong academic traditions and accumulated invaluable historical experiences and thus made itself as a leading and influential teaching and research base in the fields of political science and international studies in China.

SIS History

The SIS has its roots in the Department of Diplomacy and Basic Teaching and Research Section of Marxism-Leninism (BTRSM), founded in 1950. Because of the organizational readjustment among colleges and departments the Chinese government initiated in 1955, the main body of the Department of Diplomacy was taken away to form the College of Diplomacy and the BTRSM was incorporated into the Department of History in 1956. In 1958, BTRSM was recovered and formed the Basic Department of Marxism-Leninism, which was rebuilt into the Department of Political Science in 1960. On the instruction of Premier Zhou Enlai and the party Central Committee’s “Decision on Strengthening International Studies”, the Ministry of Education in 1964 authorized Renmin University to set up the Department of International Politics. Thanks to new round of discipline integration and organizational readjustment, the University In 2000 incorporated the Department of International Politics and Institute of Russia, East Europe and Central Asian Studies into the School of International Studies.
