Compulsory Modules Master in Fine Art Playwriting Full-time and part-time students will take three concurrent modules in the first two semesters. The fourth module will be taught in the third semester and subsequent summer months (for full-time students) or in the second year of the course (for part-time students). The fourth module will be supplemented by an ongoing series of masterclasses from professional writers and script editors. Contemporary Theatre Practice This module will introduce students to a range of contemporary theatre practices as evidenced in the theatres of Dublin. The principal aim of the course is to enable students to become conversant in the styles, forms, theories and practices that constitute contemporary theatre making in Ireland. In addition, students will be introduced to a range of dramatic production in related media (radio, television and film) whose styles and forms will be analysed in this module. The Contemporary Theatre Practice module is shared by all Master in Fine Art students (directors, designers and playwrights). Dramaturgy This module will be taught by a professional dramaturge. Its aim is to introduce students to a range of dramatic texts for the theatre or related media with an emphasis on the dramaturgical composition of those texts. An understanding of the contexts within which those dramaturgical strategies were produced will also be fostered. This seminar-based module requires students to examine key problems related to the creation and structure of scripts for performance. Students will consider a variety of theories regarding dramatic structure, consider the research requirements of script creation, explore different approaches to script development and learn to apply a dramaturgical vocabulary to a number of case studies. Writing Workshop The overall aim of the module is to prepare students for the writing of a play for performance in Module 4. Students will share their creative writing in a workshop format, and will receive both group feedback and individual tuition in the development of their craft. The module includes: creative workshops; developing an awareness of the professional writing context; developing an explicit, personal aesthetic; and offers the possibilities for writing in numerous professional contexts (theatre, education, community), and for various media (theatre and recorded media). This module also outlines career development and group or self critique; it introduces research skills, rehearsal etiquette and re-drafting. Play This module will be taught through individual supervision of the writing of a student’s full-length play (of between 45 and 90 minutes performing time). The play will be submitted for examination along with a reflective journal of the student’s practice. The development of the script will be aided by the involvement of professional actors and directors in the redrafting process. The module will culminate in a rehearsed reading of a selection of students’ work in a semi-staged showcase to an invited audience of theatre professionals. Working closely with students of other specialisations, student cinematographers have a creative involvement in fiction, animation and documentary films, commercials and multicamera television, lighting and shooting several productions during their time at the School. During the course students will be provided with tutorials, seminars, screen studies, workshops and master classes with specialist tutors and visiting professionals. All workshops and master classes are mandatory. Through Tutorials students will be guided towards finding their own criteria for self assessment and finding their own individual challenges. The aim of the tutorials is to encourage the student to get the best out of themselves through discussions and critiques with their peers and through an awareness of self. While supportive overall, tutorials will have an element of critique and challenge. They should allow the student to step back and reflect on their own work. Seminars will deal with stylistic approaches, principles of optics and photographic and video theory. Special attention will be given to the importance of relationships and interaction with other specialisations, like directors, editors, designers, sound and post production. Also, regular seminars and lectures will be conducted on Screen Art. Screen Art is crucial to broaden students' critical understanding of the art of cinema. This need is satisfied by providing systematic screenings, special events, seminars, discussions and analysis. These happen throughout the two year course. Workshops and Practical Exercises are designed to teach most aspects of traditional and digital cinematography - cameras, lenses, grip equipment, originating materials (film stock/tape), light meters, location lighting, studio lighting, day for night, night for night, filming in moving vehicles and also film grammar, crew roles, studio protocol, laboratory procedures and special visual effects. The aim is also to develop responsibility and professionalism. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS We are looking for people with innate talent. Therefore previous training in these areas is not mandatory but some basic technical knowledge is required. Experience gained from working in the camera department of the film and television industry is helpful but is not essential. You must have an understanding of the role of the Director of Photography and its creative and logistical responsibilities. You would also need to be able to demonstrate good communication and collaborative skills and leadership qualities. You must have a good understanding of “cinematic language” and demonstrate this in your submitted film material. We would like to see examples of your work that are exclusively yours. The showreel must contain fiction filming. It should demonstrate a strong visual sensibility and an awareness of the considerations of camera operating, composition and lighting and their potential for creating mood and atmosphere. Most importantly your fiction film should have a clear element of visual narrative and show your ability to tell a story with images, using all the elements that can be brought to contribute to it. This we refer to as “cinematic language”. Materials submitted with your application should be of a good technical standard. The Academy Preparation Program offers one year of intensive filmmaking/photography and academic disciplines with mentorship enabling the student to complete several art works by the end of the academic year. The program works well to prepare students for MA studies in a particular discipline. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The one-year Academy Preparation Program (APP) at FAMU International aims to provide its participants the opportunity to explore and become acquainted with the broad range of crafts, professions, arts and skills that comprise the cinematic/photographic endeavour on both a practical and theoretical level. Filmmaking hands-on program includes a large variety of practical student projects and exercises in formats from HDV, HDSLR to 16mm and 35mm. There is also practical work within a TV studio environment. Shooting is designed for locations as well as in studios. Photography students gain the skills within Photography department. Projects are specifically designed for the program curriculum and are supervised by FAMU faculty and mentors. The production of all mandatory practical exercises and final film is included in the price of tuition. Students enrolled in the one year Academy Program create their own study plan based on a combination of required – compulsory – courses, optional courses, electives, workshops and projects within their selected Major Concentrations. All courses, seminars and workshops award credits under the ECTS (European Credit Transfer System). Teachers and mentors in the program include full-time faculty from the eleven degree-granting departments of FAMU, as well as other artists, academics and film professionals as part-time faculty. As an entry-level course, the Academy Preparation Program is best suited for students interested in attaining a thorough background in audio-visual or photographic media before pursuing more in-depth studies in filmmaking and related media. While the program is designed as a general filmmaking/photographic course, it is nevertheless focused through MAJOR CONCENTRATIONS. Core courses taken by the student, mentor workshops and practical works completed will vary depending on each concentration. MAJOR CONCENTRATIONS (newly extended) for 2015/2016 are: 1.
