The Master of Engineering degree permits specialization in the following options: soils-structures engineering, environmental engineering, water resources engineering, and general civil engineering. The Master of Engineering degree program is designed to provide an opportunity for engineers to achieve formal education beyond the Baccalaureate level with a strong and directed emphasis toward the practice of engineering. The focus of the program is on the development of competency in the area of engineering design. The goal of the program is development of the student as a practitioner capable of systematically solving complex problems of society within his or her field. The Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering prepares students for careers in research, practice and further studies toward a Ph.D. degree in a speciality area in civil engineering. The M.S. degree is typically completed in 18-24 months of full-time study for students holding a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from an accredited school. The M.S. degree requires independent research for a thesis in the student's area of interest. The faculty research interests are in the broad areas of environmental, geotechnical, pavements, structural engineeirng and mechanics, and water resources engineering. Graduate students are encouraged to explore various topics for their M.S. theses depending on the mutual interest between them and the faculty. The Department offers a combined Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering/Master of Engineering, and Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering/Master of Science degree programs. The intention of the combined program is to allow qualified students to complete requirements for both a baccalaureate degree and a master’s degree in 12-18 months beyond the time required to complete the baccalaureate degree. The Masters of Public Administration (MPA) is the only MPA program in North Dakota. It was established in 1976 and serves students on the main campus in Grand Forks and students in other locations through internet-assisted live classrooms. The interaction of in-service students, along with traditional students provides a great synergy. Students with practical experience can help novice students integrate theory and practice, while traditional students bring a wealth of knowledge of recent academic developments. The core of the program resides in the Department of Political Science & Public Administration. It also offers a track in Health Administration as well as a JD/MPA option. Our students come from a broad variety of backgrounds, from accountants to political scientists to zoologists. They also work at every level of government, as well as in the nonprofit sector. Some go on to work in the private sector. Our faculty come from some of the best universities in the U. S. The department has won university awards for its teaching. Students can also get involved in research projects at the Bureau of Governmental Affairs which conducts research on issues of importance to state and local governments and non-profit organizations.
