The Executive Master in International Relations (EMIR) is a flexible and challenging graduate programme aimed at enriching the skills of professionals through a diverse modular curriculum, tailored teaching methods, and an interactive learning environment. PROGRAMME AIMS Understand the dynamics of international politics and diplomatic issues, and to develop the practical skills necessary to master the challenges of 21st century diplomacy; Advance cross-cultural negotiation and communication skills to better diffuse international frictions, manage crises and encourage international cooperation; Develop competence in dealing with challenges at the global, regional and national levels; Learn and incorporate tools, procedures and instruments to effectively manage complex projects and programmes in international and multicultural environments; Engage in a culturally diverse learning environment and build a network of professional relations with fellow students and faculty. STUDY MODE The Executive Master has been designed for professionals in a related field with a strong interest in the key developments of international politics. It spans over 9 months and includes regular evening classes, weekend workshops, a week-long summer or winter school and a final dissertation. Modules are practice-driven and solution-oriented and will be taught in English by a multinational faculty that includes experienced academics and practitioners. PROGRAMME ELEMENTS Evening Classes Throughout the semester, participants meet every two weeks for two hours to discuss diplomatic challenges and strategies in order to address them. Expect short presentations and frank debates in a workshop atmosphere. The Executive Master Evening Classes are also open to practitioners who desire to network and discuss institutional tactics and strategies. Case Studies & Simulations In each of the two semesters, participants and practitioners take part in three Friday afternoon to Saturday evening case study or simulation sessions that confront them with real world situations, difficult decisions and the need to find sustainable solutions. Expect immersive group-driven and solution-oriented exercises. The Executive Master Case Studies & Simulations are also open to practitioners who desire to engage in practical training. DURATION: 9 MONTHS (60 ECTS) CASE STUDY PROGRAMME SEMESTER 1 (18 Etcs) MODULE 1 Governing Global Issues I MODULE 2 New dimensions of foreign policy, geopolitics and global security I MODULE 3 Fundamental skills for the leaders of tomorrow I SEMESTER 2 (18 Ects) MODULE 1 Governing Global Issues I MODULE 2 New dimensions of foreign policy, geopolitics and global security II MODULE 3 Fundamental skills for the leaders of tomorrow II WINTER OR SUMMER SCHOOL (4 Ects) A one week full immersion course will provide students with a specialized opportunity to explore the key developments issues in global governance. The Executive Master Winter and Summer Schools are also open to practitioners who desire to engage in an intense one week of training. RESEARCH PAPER (20 Ects) To complete the EMIR, participants write a 8’000 to 10’000 words dissertation applying theoretical insights and practical solutions to a problem they face or might face in their professional career. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Applicants should possess an undergraduate degree from a university or its equivalent. Students are encour­aged to discuss the course with GSD academic tutors prior the submisison of the application. Applicants whose mother tongue is not English must provide evidence of their English language capabili­ties at an approved level. Applicants who fail to reach this standard may be required to complete an agreed English Language tuition programme prior to the com­mencement of the Executive Master programme (EMIR).
