The School of Visual and Performing Arts currently houses three departments including: Music and Dance, Theatre Arts and Film Technology and Fine Art and Design. Master of Music (MMus) Master of Music (MMus) degree will be offered in Musical Performance,African Music and Musicology by course work, examination and project. Course Regulations The Master of Music will cover a minimum of two years. In the first year of study, candidates will take eight core units including one compulsory School of Visual and Performing Arts unit, and two electives. In the second year, they will take four elective in the first semester and prepere a recital and dissertation in the second semester. The composition dissertation will investigate a compositional problem that the candidate will have identified, accompanied by a creative work in which the the issues discussed in the dissertation are presented. Examinations All units shall be examined at the end of the semster in which they are taken. The examination pass mark in each unit shall be 50% of the total mark. Each unit shall be assessed out of 100%.Continuous Assessment Tests shall contribute 40% and the University Examination 60% of the total marks. Where a unit consists solely of practical work, it shall be examined wholly by continuous assessment, in which case the latter shall account for 100%. Music The aim is to educate a school-leaver who is able to teach music at all kinds and grades of schools. The study is tied with preceding bachelor study, concentrated on gaining special musical knowledge and abilities. Master study degree focuses in collaboration with pedagogical and psychological subjects and with praxis at basic and high schools to development of musical pedagogical skills. The subjects take account of pedagogical orientation of master degree. Description of the entrance examination and evaluation criteria 1. Exam in the first subject – a maximum score of 30 points. 2. Exam in the second subject – a maximum score of 30 points. 3. Oral exam – assessing the applicants’ general awareness of pedagogy and psychology, and their motivation to study the chosen subjects – a maximum score of 30 points. Total score – 90 points maximum. English Language The entrance exam is conducted as a written text consisting of a linguistic and literary part. The linguistic part (langue disciplines): text analysis with regard to its phonetic, morphological, lexicological and syntactic aspects. A successful applicant needs to be well-versed in all the basic disciplines within the English language system (phonetics, phonology, lexicology, morphology and syntax). The linguistic test plumbs the applicants’ knowledge of the relevant terminology, their ability to properly expound miscellaneous systemic phenomena within their original context, and to give a practical illustration using some concrete language material. The two-year program aims to provide the methodological fundamentals, the analytical skills and the cultural background for higher level musicological research and, more generally, to allow students to competently participate in current discussions of music. In the academic panorama, musical knowledge appears nowadays to be complex and multifaceted: it includes musical texts and theories, art and popular music, compositional tools and conceptions of performance, the impact of media on musical experience, and the functions of music in different social contexts. The Master prepares students for this composite and interdisciplinary knowledge, which is now a fundamental prerequisite for doctoral programs in Europe and America. The skills acquired also provide access to careers in high-level institutions dedicated to conserving and promoting musical resources, and professions that involve transmitting musical culture or conceiving and managing cultural events with musical content. The Department of musicology and cultural heritage, which hosts the program, is part of the University of Pavia, but it is located in Cremona, Claudio Monteverdi’s native city. In 2013 it ranked first for academic production among all Italian departments comparable for size and sector of research. It is made up of distinguished scholars who represent all fields of musicological research and have gained international recognition. A long history of exchanges involving both students and instructors has consolidated the Department’s position within today’s global academic debate. The teaching staff’s areas of specialisation range from historiography to music theory and philology, ethnomusicology and popular music studies, covering the entire chronological span from classical antiquity to the 21st century. Our wide and finely articulated didactic offer guarantees a complete and competitive training.
