Dual Award in Operations Management This unique Dual Award programme provides students with the opportunity to study at two highly respected European institutions, Newcastle University Business School and the University of Groningen, while experiencing two amazing European cities. The key feature of this distinctive programme is its focus on operations management in different contexts of culture and business environment. On completion students will be awarded degrees in: Operations and Supply Chain Management MSc (Newcastle University); and Technology Operations Management MSc (University of Groningen). Students will learn how to analyse operations functions in different countries, understand various institutional environments and develop a sharp eye for operations management within multinational enterprises. The programme also enables students to develop operations strategies, instruments and processes while developing skills to efficiently communicate and cooperate with people from different cultural backgrounds. The programme will enhance students' employability for a wide range of operations management careers in international, multinational or transnational companies. Who is the programme for? The programme should be of interest to graduates with a background in relevant subject areas (i.e. science, engineering, maths and management). Graduates from other disciplines may also consider this programme. The programme aims to produce graduates with the necessary specialist knowledge and skills appropriate to pursue careers in operations management, technology management, supply chain management, general management, and consulting. For students interested in further study, the programme will enable them to develop advanced research skills, the ability to critically evaluate and utilise current research, and to generate directions for further study that open onto to PhD routes. Practical skill development On a practical level, students will be able to: conceptualise real world problems using analytical frameworks drawn from operations theory identify key factors and theories, critically analyse and evaluate the concepts and practices of operations strategy in different contexts solve operations problems within different business environment with particular emphasis on operations strategy integrate evidence from a variety of sources to effect improvement in the operations performance advise within the workplace on operation functions and strategy in both national and international contexts Modules The programme is modular in structure, comprising 180 credits, which are studied on a full-time basis over 17 months. Semester One is studied at Newcastle University and Semester Two at the University of Groningen. Supervision for the dissertation is managed jointly across the institutions. For Semester Three, participants can choose to undertake their dissertation at either University. Supervisors will be allocated from both Universities, regardless of which institution is chosen. As well as the inclusion of specific modules addressing some advanced context, a range of the module assessments give students the opportunity to develop and practice intercultural communication and learning, harnessing the international experience of their programme and the international cohort and staff teaching the modules. Semester One: Newcastle University Purchasing and supply chain management (20 credits) Technology change and innovation management (10 credits) Advanced Management Accounting (10 credits) Students would then follow either: Stream A - This stream is for students without an undergraduate degree in Operations Management Operations management (20 credits); Or Stream B - This stream is for students with an undergraduate degree in Operations Management. Studying this route is at the discretion of the Degree Programme Director. Supply chain and logistics modelling and control (10 credits) All students following Stream B must then choose one 10 credit module from the following: Understanding organisations (10 credits) International business environment (10 credits) Market analysis (10 credits) Semester Two: University of Groningen Product and service development Process improvement and change Asset management Inventory management Research methods for technology operations management Behavioural operations management Semester Three: Provided jointly by Newcastle University and University of Groningen Dissertation (60 credits) Modules will be offered subject to availability. Entry requirements Applicants should normally hold an upper-second class degree (2:1 level) or international equivalent. The programme should be of interest to graduates with a background in relevant subject areas (i.e. science, engineering, maths and management). In certain circumstances graduates from other disciplines will be considered by the Degree Programme Director. Applicants whose first language is not English require IELTS 6.5 or equivalent, with a minimum of 6.5 in written English, and a minimum of 6.0 in all other sub skills. Please be aware we do not accept the pre-sessional English programme for entry onto this programme. Applicants should quote the programme code 4120F on the application form. Visa information for Dual Award programmes International students will require a UK Tier 4 student visa for their first semester at Newcastle University, this visa will be curtailed when relocated to the University of Groningen for the second semester. To obtain your visa for The Netherlands you will have to prove to the Dutch immigration authorities that your financial resources are sufficient to support yourself during your stay. The Admissions Office at the University of Groningen expects you to transfer €10,750 which includes a non-refundable legal fee of €300 for your visa and residence permit, this will be payable during Semester one. Once you have paid this deposit the University of Groningen will apply for your visa on your behalf. The deposit minus the legal fee will be returned to you once you have opened a Dutch bank account with a local bank. Please note that it is NOT possible to arrange a visa for yourself at the Dutch embassy in your home country or in the UK. All students are welcome to return to Newcastle University for their research semester to carry out their dissertation. International students are required to apply for a student visitor visa for this period; this can be applied for whilst in The Netherlands. Note that a student visitor visa does not allow students to work whilst in the UK and they must leave at the end of the programme of study.
