NEW - Master in European Economic Governance This master's program will complement SEP’s other activities, which are currently focused on the analysis of the economy and governance of both the European Union (EU) and the European Economic and Monetary Union (EMU), with an aim to develop policy suggestions. SEP's analytical research will enhance MEEG's theoretical, institutional and applied knowledge. After a one-year course, MEEG students will earn an international master's degree (Master di II livello) in Economics. The master’s program is divided into two terms. The first term focuses on providing essential analytical and macroeconomic tools, as well as an overview of the historical development and legal evolution of the EU and EMU. In the second term, courses concentrate on the internal market of the EU and related key regulatory issues, such as the regulation of banking and capital markets, corporate governance, consumer protection, energy, and the environment. In order to get the most out of these courses, students are expected to already possess basic analytical tools, and two preliminary courses will be offered to those who lack prior training in the field of economics. Almost all big and medium-sized firms operating within EMU member states entertain stable and continuous interactions with key European institutions. These interactions are often hindered by insufficient knowledge of the regulatory framework on the side of firms. On the flipside, European institutions often fail to factor in technical and country-specific instruments, causing them to inadequately assess the impact of their regulatory framework on the private sector. The MEEG aims at training professionals who can see the complete picture, and act as a vital link between national institutions, companies, and European institutions. Program The MEEG is a second level master's degree (Master di II livello). It is conducted in English, with a completion requirement of 60 credits. All applicants must possess a four or five-year undergraduate degree (or equivalent diploma), and will be selected based on their CV, and, in certain cases, an interview. The MEEG program includes two preliminary courses (for candidates who require basic technical tools), twelve main courses, two instrumental courses (Math-Lab and Application for European Funds), and three optional courses. Each of the preliminary courses lasts 12 hours and grants no credit. Each of the main and instrumental courses lasts 20 hours (including possible course-specific seminars) and grants 3 credits; 3 credits are provided by each of the optional courses (see below). A master's thesis provides 6 credits, and additional credits derive from activities in common with other master's programs, or self-directed activities approved by the teaching board. The MEEG intends to assist students with solid academic track records in finding internship opportunities at economic and financial institutions, both national and European. Instruction is divided into a preparatory phase, if necessary, and two full academic terms. Students who need to acquire basic technical tools for advancing through the program must take two preliminary courses in September, neither of which provide credits toward graduation. The first academic term spans October-December, during which students must complete between 7-8 courses (21-24 credits). The second term spans March-May, and consists of the remaining 7-8 courses (21-24credits), along with additional seminars as required. For all courses, attendance is compulsory. Lectures are usually held three days per week. A fourth day is reserved for general conferences and seminars, as well as internal course-specific events. A fifth day is dedicated to tutoring and discussion sessions, as well as individual study. The period from June to September is devoted to preparing the master's thesis and/or completing a possible internship. The program's structure allows for some flexibility in order to accommodate individual interests. Motivated candidates may submit proposals for self-directed study to the teaching board, with the understanding that refusal is a possibility. To earn the master's degree, candidates must pass a written exam at the end of each completed course write, and present a thesis to the teaching board, and satisfy the requirement for self-directed study. Program MEEG comprises the following courses: (i) two preliminary courses (to be taken in September) dealing with mathematical and statistical applications of economic theory and policy; (ii) two main courses on European macroeconomic theory and policy; (iii) six main courses on European regulation; (iv) one main course on European and comparative law; (v) one main course on European economic history; (vi) one main course on European economic institutions; (vii) one main course on European political institutions; (viii) two instrumental courses; (ix) two elective courses or group of courses; (x) seminars. In general (see below for exceptions), a completed program of study will include the twelve main courses, two instrumental courses, two elective courses, and additional seminars. Exceptions Candidates who do not have sufficient quantitative skill at the time of enrollment will be required to complete two additional preliminary courses. Candidates who possess an undergraduate degree lacking in economic training can substitute the two preliminary courses under (i) with two basic courses in Maths and Statistics offered by LUISS University. Additionally, they will be requested to replace the three optional courses under (ix) with three basic courses on microeconomics, macroeconomics and economic policy, offered by other degree programs at LUISS University. To supplement the above-mentioned courses, the master's program will include: (i) seminars held by key European representatives; (ii) professional training seminars, possibly in common with other master's programs; and (iii) seminars in which candidates will present their theses. This research-oriented master's programme now offers a comprehensive four semester programme dedicated solely to the study of development economics issues. It leads to an internationally recognized and accredited Master's degree in Development Economics and offers research-oriented teaching that covers theoretical as well as empirical issues in economic development. Its wide course offerings, one semester stay abroad, master's thesis and specialisation in agricultural economics or economics will enable students to analyse current issues in development economics and prepare them for careers in research or policy. Programme structure The Master's Programme in Development Economics is four semesters in length during which 120 ECTS are required. It is divided into the course phase and the master's thesis. There are four modules (24 credits) of compulsory modules. Students can then specialise in agricultural economics or economics, each requiring a further 12 credits (two modules) of compulsory courses in the field of specialisation. Then students can choose another 36 credits (six modules) in development or agricultural economics from a wide variety of course offerings, of which one course (6 credits) has to be a seminar. Three modules (18 credits) can then be chosen freely also among other subjects and the master's thesis completes the programme. Students have to study abroad for one semester. This semester can be spent at a partner university of the Faculty of Economic Sciences of Göttingen University. International students are exempt from this requirement.
