Marketing Philosophy Marketing is the lifeblood of business. Every activity in business involves costs and it is only when one of the many functions - selling is performed that revenue accrues to an enterprise. This places Marketing in the very central position in every business. The premier position of Marketing in industry has been recognized, and establishments that do not give this vital business function its appropriate place pay the price for this failure with relative underdevelopment and vulnerability. Marketing has become even more important as technology and industrialization leap forward daily, with the resultant large scale production in anticipation of demand. One of its functions is to identify, anticipate and satisfy needs. With the increasing sophistication in computerization and quantification, scientific purchasing and management of materials in industry are imperative. These developments justify and indeed compel the establishment of the programme in Marketing. Objectives of the Programme The Postgraduate Programme in Marketing of the Department of Marketing, Enugu State University of Science and Technology aims at producing graduates equipped with the ability to influence the production of goods and services that satisfy (at a profit to the enterprise), the changing needs of individuals and groups in society. The Postgraduate Programmes in Marketing consist of the Postgraduate Diploma (PGD), the Master of Business Administration (MBA), the Master of Science (M.Sc.) and the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA PROGRAMME The Postgraduate Diploma Programme has been specially designed for graduates and executives with deficiency or lack of previous professional knowledge in Marketing in order to equip them with the modern Marketing knowledge. It is also to prepare graduates with some deficiencies to fit adequately into the M.Sc. Marketing programme. A Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing is a recognized qualification for the practice of Marketing and for occupying high and responsible Marketing and business positions in Banking, Insurance, academic and governmental institutions and industries. Graduates of the PGD programme in Marketing should posses the ability to analyze and forecast the economic trend, understand and appreciate the presence of the consumer, and work effectively within the legal framework of society in which goods and services are produced and distributed. The programme does not only aim at producing graduates who will function as managers in commerce, industry, and government, but even more so, entrepreneurs who will be self-employed as well as employers of labour. It is expected that enterprising firms, organizations, and academic institutions would take advantage of the Diploma course to provide short-term (but very vital) Marketing training for their personnel. Objectives of the Programme: The specific objectives of the programme are: To expose students to fundamental courses in Marketing needed for the advanced M.Sc in Marketing programme. To teach students the process of investigative science needed to explore theoretical and practical problems in Marketing. To update students with deficient knowledge in the field of Marketing and other cognate business courses needed to understand and analyze Marketing problems. DURATION OF THE PROGRAMME The programme lasts a minimum of two semesters. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Provided the matriculation requirements are satisfied; Five credit passes including English Language and Mathematics at the 'O' Level. Relevant Bachelor's Degrees not lower than 3rd class division from recognized Universities. Bachelor's Degrees with at least 2nd class lower division in areas not related to Administration may be considered Higher National Diploma at Upper Credit level Relevant professional qualifications Mass Communication POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA (PGD) IN MASS COMMUNICATION MASTER OF SCIENCE (M.Sc.) IN MASS COMMUNICATION DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (Ph.D) IN MASS COMMUNICATION Introduction The Department of Mass Communication, ESUT was established in July, 1985 with strength of the five full time academic staff and other part-time lecturers and graduated its first set of graduates in 1988. The department was at that time in then faculty of Humanities when Anambra State University was briefly merged with the Institute of Management and technology. Sequel to the de-merging of the two institutions in November, 1985, the Interim Joint Council that was set up by the then Anambra State Government to govern the affairs of the State University abolished the Faculty of Humanities and moved the Department of Mass Communication to the Faculty of Environmental Sciences. Based on the premise that the department seems to have closer affinity with some of the academic programmes in the Faculty of Management Sciences, the school Senate, in September, 1987, moved the Department of Mass Communication from the Faculty of Environmental Sciences to the Faculty of Management Sciences where it is currently located. The department currently runs a Bachelor's (B.Sc) Degree programme for both regular and part-tome students, postgraduate programmes comprising Post-Graduate Diploma (PGD), Master's Degree (M.Sc) and Doctorate Degree (Ph.D) in Mass Communication.
