Courses In the courses, you will study critical research methods, design theory, strategic thinking, and historical and contemporary design practices—all within the broader context of urban and architectural design studies. You will then explore a broad range of methods, tools, and topics that define contemporary urban and architectural projects, examining the relationships between design practices and the cultures and contexts they serve. Workshops Guided by industry professionals and faculty project leaders, you will work in cooperation with leading companies on projects from concept to design, from micro to macro. You will also analyze your projects from an economic, marketing, social, and anthropological point of view. Some possible workshop challenges include the following: Develop a strategic vision for solving a specific urban issue, moving from a specific intervention to applications within a wider framework. Investigate the relationships between architecture and urban planning and related fields of study, such as product design, interaction design, and communication design. Experiment with cross-disciplinary languages, techniques, and modalities. Design parts of open spaces that are part of a natural or extra-urban context or that are placed in urban gaps. Critically evaluate the landscape elements that need to be maintained, re-designed, or regenerated; formulate a project proposal that considers spatial complexity, social and cultural implications, and environmental and energetic issues. Final Project Working under the guidance of industry professionals if they choose, students must research and write a final report on a topic of their choice, optionally illustrated with 3D models. For all this, today we cannot comprehend the conception of a new product, space of service without the involvement and complicity of professionals from different disciplines. Methodology and structure: The methodology of the Master in Interior Design is based on the project, with the participation of companies and professional firms whose representatives work as part of the faculty of the course. The teaching methodology leads to concrete project experiences and a permanent research on themselves, with the aim of creating a strong and distinguishable identity. The Master in Interior Design is designed on the basis of a learning/teaching model reflecting the organizational structure of a design firm, serving as a context in which the multiplicity of prior knowledge represents a value. The tutor has a role of mediation and supports learning process while the student is an active part in the construction of his own skills especially those related to design world. All other disciplines, such as strategy, project communication, business and communication technology graft organically onto multiple project experiences. Teaching methodology is divided into a methodological phase, a design phase and a final moment of synthesis. In all the three phases, lessons include workshops aimed at building and sharing experiences and projects with students. The methodology phase is aimed at preparing students to moments of research and concepts in order to define the objectives and the real value of the project. A fundamental aspect of the course is the study of composition’s principles. The design phase of the Workshops allows students to get to the heart of the topics and catch the specificities of each subject (product design, interior design, landscape design) by providing the tools to become more familiar with the project. This is the point at which the methodological phase finds application in the practical sphere. The last phase is based on the development of the final project, a moment of synthesis of all the lessons where students develop the insights experienced during the course, always led by supervisors who guide them on this journey. Theoretical courses are divided into design-related courses, seminars and elective courses. In the Design team workshop, urgent challenges of current times are taken on and students define projects collaboratively by analysis and data gathering, work on proposal-making which effects a positive change to a current condition, develop project plans and implement proposals. The project needs to have an obvious link to society, collaboration needs to be structured, project implemented and experience of the work process and its effect disseminated. In the Design team, emphasis is placed on teamwork, where students in their first and second year work together on the overall goals of a larger thematic project and develop their own or communal project activity, in individual or systematic solutions. Individual projects are developed with regard to specialised knowledge creation of individual discipline areas within the Department with the guidance of teachers in Research labs, e.g. Research lab in Type and media, Research lab in Photographic studies, Research lab in Visual communication, and Research lab in Spatial analysis. Alongside Individual projects and Design team projects, students participate in seminars where specialised subjects of the discipline are discussed. The assessment looks at the quality and presentation of projects according to each projects status within the relevant timeframe. The MA project The subject of the MA project is based on the initiative of the student. There, his own interests, feelings and intuition are paramount. A student defines and structures the project’s design process (see image) in collaboration with his instructor. The project must have social context; local or international. It must be considered, demonstrate relevant technical abilities, aesthetic understanding and ethical awareness. The MA project may issue from research and design work created in students’ Individual project(s) and or Design team. At the beginning, the student makes a situation analysis of the project and explicitly states why the choice of subject is urgent. The student needs to be able to explain the social significance and context of the project and make a plan for a design process. Research and context is part of the design process. It is always directed at going beyond what the student knows and creating new knowledge. This work is directed at what it is possible to teach and what needs to be discovered. The work process is documented and made explicit along with data collection and ideological context. The aim is to awaken and mature forces that lie unused or dormant. It is important to develop daring, to find and define countercurrents to a project as well as assessing and taking risks in the progression of the project.
