The Specializing Master in Color Design and Technology aims to provide advanced training to professionals, so as to enable them to understand and manage the many technological and design issues, often across many disciplinary areas, typical of all those professional and research sectors in which the use and management of color are essential. Examples of such production areas include industrial product design, interior architecture, communication, fashion, entertainment and urban planning. Particular attention will be paid to analyzing and summarizing utilization, control, ideation, organization and planning through the use of color. Consequently, color is not treated as a simple attribute of objects or surfaces, but as a means of expression and design underlying perception and interaction with reality. The Specializing Master consists of two phases. The theory and technique based phase aims to train students in the technical aspects of measurement, control, digital reproduction and comparison relating to disciplines such as physics, optics, colorimetry, chemistry, psychology and perception. The second phase focuses on the methods learned, which will be contextualized and experimented with in different color application and design areas such as interior design, urban spaces, industrial products, fashion and communication. Professional Outcomes The Specializing Master aims to produce an innovative professional figure, widely in demand by the market, with advanced technical and design skills concerning color use and control and color design in research and in several sectors such as interior design, urban planning, industrial product design, fashion design and communication. The Stage Design programme is purposely designed to allow students to either specialise on one area of stage design (set, costume OR lighting design) or to combine disciplines as desired (set AND costume design for example, or set AND lighting design). The course is designed to complement the existing Master in Fine Art (Playwriting) and the Master in Fine Art (Theatre Directing). Students on all three programmes will work together in collaboration, developing a shared understanding of contemporary theatre practice and a collective appreciation of the dedication and commitment required to make innovative performances happen. In addition to the core classes and workshops, individual and group tuition from The Lir’s Head of Design will be a key feature of the training. In addition, master classes by visiting practitioners will supplement the student experience. Professional placements are a key feature of the programme and all students will showcase their work in public productions at the culmination of the course. Students can opt to take this course either part-time (24 months) or full-time (12 months). Full-time and part-time students will take three concurrent modules in the first two terms. Students will explore the relationship between lighting design and other design elements, e.g. costume design, set design. The mechanics of stage lighting will be covered in detail to include the principles of electricity, optics, light sources and theatre lanterns. Students will learn how to choose lighting instruments, calculate lighting angles, control light distribution etc., and will learn the basic principles of scale drawing, and how to produce a lighting plan. Masters in Design. Despite it’s relatively recent discovery, photography has gone through different evolutions changing itself and the world around it. On one side, it has helped us to better understand the many manifestations of reality. On the other side, photography has unhinged our certainties to reveal a metaphysical inner world. With the advent of digital photography, the photographer’s work- from pioneering alchemy in its infancy, to advanced computing today – has undergone a process of democratization that has broadened the basic skill base and raised the level of expectation at the top. To be an exceptional professional photographer today not only requires having technical expertise at shooting and printing but also a broader awareness of the entire creative and production processes. Familiarity with all technological aspects (shooting, editing, post production, presentation, distribution), the different areas and related parties involved are not enough to meet the market’s needs. Creativity and content design are the difference between the role of a person who merely does the work and of a potential creative director. A holistic approach is therefore essential to establish oneself as a leading professional in the industry. More experienced photographers are hired not only as technical experts, but as real creative directors. In this light, it is clear that a multi-disciplinary approach is the main goal. Structure Before you are admitted to the master programme MADTech, you will draw up a broad outline of the artistic research you want to carry out. What is it that fascinates you about art and technology? What experiments would you like to carry out? During the admissions procedure you will discuss your ideas with us. Once admitted, your ideas form the start of the next two years. The first year of this master programme is mostly about exploring your chosen field. You will carry out your own experiments, tinker with new technology during creative programming and explore research possibilities in art practices. This is how you will improve your skills and knowledge, getting to know the art practice, creating new concepts and finding out the possibilities of artistic technology research. In your first year you will spend a lot of time in Hybrid Arts Lab, where you will devise and carry out your own experiments. In addition you will attend theory and research courses at the University of Groningen and take part in a joint research course 'Image & Experience in a technologically charged society' with master students of the University of Groningen. There is also plenty of time to discuss the results of experiments, workshops, research projects and your own progress with fellow students, experts and public.
