Students also learn to derive knowledge and principles of design from cultural and natural heritage places to explore new ways that contemporary creative practices including architecture and urban design can be informed and enriched by history, culture, ecology, tradition, community, and craft. The program is a vibrant multidisciplinary platform for theoretical and practical engagement in context-specific fieldwork to engage a range of academic studies from architecture and urban design to the humanities, cultural geography, management, entrepreneurship, and tourism. The course is a program of the UNESCO Chair in Culture, Habitat, and Sustainable Development at Srishti. As such, students will gain familiarity with international (and national) norms and standards in heritage management including the World Heritage Convention. Studios facilitate collaborative and creative design solutions to complex, open-ended problems Workshops provide intense learning experiences in making and doing, across the different disciplines. Internship with an industry or a design studio is compulsory for students at the end of 1st year for M.Des. Self Initiated Project is an end of the semester challenge that allows the student to engage in research / enquiry or design based projects. Target This study path is designed for post-graduate students coming from all over the world who want to specialize professionally in the curatorial sector, including museums, galleries, fairs or for auction houses. Previous study in the field of Arts and Management are desirable, but not essential. Methodology and Structure The curriculum of the course consists of surveys of modern and international contemporary art, as well as close consideration of visual arts institutions and practices, training in exhibition organization and public programs in museums and not-for-profit galleries, commissioning, writing, publishing and commercial gallery activity. This degree program has been designed to meet the academic needs of qualified students from around the world. The M.A. in Museum Studies is an interdisciplinary advanced degree program which aims to provide students with an understanding of how museums operate within their social and cultural contexts. Drawing on faculty from the U.S., U.K. and continental Europe, courses are taught using a variety of innovative methods, yet they share two fundamental core principles which are embedded in the program’s philosophy: 1) museums’ engagement with the public is paramount and 2) museums vary greatly across the globe and therefore must be studied from an international comparative perspective. Located in Florence, Italy, one of the world’s most important museum centers, the program offers unparalleled learning and internship opportunities. Guest lectures by museum professionals expose students to a wide variety of international perspectives, widening their horizons while visits to museums, historical monuments, archives, libraries, and relevant non-profit institutions essentially use Florence as a classroom, integrating students within the city and offering them hands-on exposure to real world museum research and practices. Both the lectures and the visits facilitate the important transition from student to museum professional at the termination of the degree program. The program, which will be taught in collaboration with the University of Florence and the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi, additionally seeks to position itself as a much-needed forum for reflection and debate on museological issues in the city. Aims

Museums have become an important field of study, with a wide range of research focusing on their history, collections, practices and social roles. The MLitt in Museum Studies makes much use of the University’s own internationally important collections and museums to explore these issues and to give practical experience of working in a museum, working closely with professional as well as academic staff.

Syllabus

In the first half-session a core course ‘The Museum Idea’ focuses on the history and theory of collecting and museums, with the second half-session core course ‘Curating an Exhibition’ includings a wide range of practical experiences as students play the key role in creating the King’s Museum’s summer exhibition. Alongside these core courses, students will be able to choose two courses from a range of electives drawn from disciplines such as Anthropology, Archaeology, Business Studies, History of Art, History, Law and Literature. During the summer those students with a research interest are able to complete a dissertation, while those with a more vocational interest produce a project based on a 20 day placement in a museum....
