Modules Contemporary Theatre Practice This compulsory module will introduce students to a range of contemporary theatre practices. The Contemporary Theatre Practice module is shared by all Master in Fine Art students (directors, designers and playwrights). Directing Workshop In this compulsory module students will investigate various directing processes in a workshop format. Students will work with The Lir’s Head of Directing and visiting directors, as well as professional and student actors. Students will receive both group feedback and individual tuition in the development of their craft. Workshops will cover such areas as: text and a creative world-view; developing an awareness of the professional directing context; developing an explicit, personal aesthetic; working collaboratively with actors and other artists. This module also outlines career development and provides a constructive framework for group and self critique. It introduces research skills and rehearsal etiquette by working in a professional environment. The overall aim of this module is to prepare students to direct a play in the Theatre Production Module. Theatre Production This compulsory module aims to enable students to apply the skills acquired in the other Modules to the development of their individual creative voice and practice, and in the direction of a theatre performance of between 30-60 minutes which will be showcased to the professional industry as part of The Lir’s on-going programme of public performances and events. Each student will be individually supervised in pre-production, rehearsals, tech and public performances throughout Term Three and over the summer months. Two Assistant Director placements working alongside professional theatre directors will form a key component of the preparation for the final production. Dramaturgy for Theatre Directing This elective module is taught by a professional dramaturge. Its aim is to introduce students to a range of dramatic texts for the theatre with an emphasis on the dramaturgical composition of those texts. An understanding of the contexts within which those dramaturgical strategies were produced will also be fostered. This seminar-based module requires students to examine key problems related to the creation and structure of scripts for performance. Students will consider a variety of theories regarding dramatic structure, consider the research requirements of script creation, explore different approaches to script development and learn to apply a dramaturgical vocabulary to a number of case studies. Similar to the Contemporary Theatre Practice module, Dramaturgy is shared with MFA playwriting students (for whom it is a compulsory module) and MFA design students (for whom it is an elective module) and is supported by specific tutorials focusing on each individual strand of the MFA programme. At Visual Cultural Studies you are given the opportunity to study ethnographic research methods, anthropological theory, and ethnographic film making in an international environment, culminating with the production of your very own film and written thesis. The Department of Archaeology and Social Anthropology offers a two-year full-time Master's programme in Visual Cultural Studies (VCS). The aim of this programme is to teach students how to produce knowledge about people's lives and cultures through an exploration of their everyday lives based on the use of qualitative social science research methods and ethnographic film. The programme combines lectures in academic theory and method, filmmaking and practical instruction in camerawork, sound recording and editing. The students at the Master's programme follow a set of courses the first two semesters before they travel on fieldwork. Based on this fieldwork, the students write a Master's Thesis and make an ethnographic film. For a complete setup of the programme, please refer to the Programme structure below. The films produced at VCS are well known for their quality. Every year several films are selected for international documentary and ethnographic film festivals. Master in Curatorial Practice

This innovative course benefits from collaborative relationships with museums and galleries of national and international significance, notably the Holburne Museum, Arnolfini, Bristol and Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery. It covers a wide range of curatorial approaches, from management of the historical collection to creative curating of cutting edge contemporary art, craft and design.

The course takes a broad view of curatorial practice and the programme includes consideration of activities in the private domain of the domestic interior, and in virtual reality, as well as commercial treatments, such as shop window display.

The course is offered in both full and part-time modes. It is normally one year, (3 trimesters) in duration in full time mode or 6 trimesters in part-time mode. The first two trimesters comprise taught sessions and assessed projects, while the Master's Project in the final part of the course is by negotiated project only. Completion of the first 2 modules on the course lead to the award of the Postgraduate Certificate, and completion of the first 4 modules leads to the award of the Postgraduate Diploma. The Master in Arts Management is a 11-month full-immersion interdisciplinary course, that is truly unique due to its itinerant formula. The study plan is divided in the two prestigious locations of Florence and Rome, with the addition of Venice, with a one week workshop, to engage students in a grand tour of contemporary art and education, with a focus on the jobs of the future. The Arts Manager operates with a highly interdisciplinary method and is intended to be a fundamental figure in the activities of public and private institutions, with many areas of professional application. THIS PROGRAM IS TAUGHT IN ENGLISH This study path is opened to graduates in humanities and artistic fields coming from all over the world who want to develop their artistic knowledge through a study-tour that touches the main Italian artistic cities. Participants will complete their educational pathway studying subjects and institutions related to the management of the artistic and cultural world. The Master in Arts Management is divided into two operational modules, characterised by a distinct course of study in relation to the city in which it takes place, each involving an examination and a final project. Some of the subjects of the course cut across the modules, while others are specific and unique to each location. The Master is held in partnership with the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi in Florence, the MIBAC (Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities) in Rome and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice. At the end of the course, students will be ready to work in arts and cultural companies and institutions (e.g. museums, foundations, galleries, festivals, auction houses), in the so-called cultural sectors (national and international cultural institutions, profit and nonprofit), in areas related to contemporary art and with large enterprises investing in the cultural market (banks, insurance companies, banking institutions, event management companies, trade fair organisations, art foundations, exhibition production companies, or companies operating in the communication world). FLORENCE - Design of exhibitions and events The Florence module focuses on developing specific skills to manage the different organisational phases of a Cultural event: from the design to the identification of partners and sponsors, to communication management and content creation. As a group, with the support of teachers and the course coordinator, students will plan and create one or more cultural events with real clients. ROME - Art Direction: focus on festivals The goal of this module is to develop a new approach to artistic heritage management. The Master’s semester in Rome combines the huge culture that the city plays at international level with the vivacity of the backgrounds that characterises its urban culture. With the support of new technologies, students will explore possible cultural convergences that stimulate interest and participation. VENICE - 1 week Workshop In partnership with the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, students will participate in a one-week workshop in Venice. They will visit the main institutions and meet the professionals of the Peggy Guggenheim. The Peggy Guggenheim Collection is one of the most important museums in Italy for European and American art from the first half of the Twentieth century. Personas que trabajan o están interesadas en proyectos del Patrimonio Mundial y en proyectos de investigación relacionados con el mismo. El requisito indispensable para la admisión es poseer un título universitario de un mínimo de tres años, equivalente a una licenciatura o grado. Contenidos El programa proporciona bases sólidas para el diseño de programas de intervención patrimonial y cultural. Se presentarán con detalle los aspectos teóricos, sociales, institucionales, legales y técnicos que inciden en la elaboración de estos programas. El master incide tanto en la posibilidad de realización de planes desde instituciones gubernamentales (locales, regionales, nacionales o internacionales), como de entidades de iniciativa social y empresas privadas. En el programa se hace énfasis en las estrategias de management para la preservación y promoción de los sitios de Patrimonio Mundial, a través de la preparación de planes de gestión y de proyectos. El programa resulta útil también para la realización de proyectos patrimoniales basados en el desarrollo, tanto de patrimonio material como inmaterial. El master presenta dos características principales que lo hacen especialmente relevante para los profesionales interesados en el desarrollo del patrimonio cultural. En primer lugar, el plan de estudios se basa en una aproximación multidisciplinar a la cultura y al patrimonio, comprendiendo tanto aspectos teóricos como prácticos en la economía cultural, la gestión del patrimonio cultural, el desarrollo local, los valores culturales y el proceso de diseño de proyectos. En segundo lugar, el alumnado aprenderá de manera aplicada el proceso de preparación de un proyecto propio, con posibilidades de implementación al finalizar el curso. Programa El programa se estructura en tres fases: Primera fase: periodo de aprendizaje a distancia (octubre – diciembre). A través de la plataforma on-line, los estudiantes inician un programa de formación consistente en lecturas y ejercicios como preparación a los distintos módulos. Segunda fase: periodo presencial intensivo (enero – abril). Durante su estancia en Barcelona los estudiantes realizan cursos con una carga horaria semanal de 28 horas (de 9,30 a 14 y 16 a 18 h). El enfoque está especialmente orientado a la realidad ibero -americana. Además de clases prácticas y talleres, el programa presencial consta de visitas a entidades patrimoniales de Barcelona y Cataluña. Tercera fase: (abril - septiembre) elaboración del proyecto final. Los estudiantes elaboran a distancia, bajo la supervisión de un tutor, un proyecto cultural iniciado durante la etapa presencial. La formación se concluye con la presentación del proyecto que será evaluado por el Comité Científico del Master. El 14 de septiembre es la fecha límite de presentación de la versión final del proyecto. El Master cuenta con la presencia de más de treinta profesores expertos procedentes de universidades de distintos países que dotan al curso de una amplia perspectiva internacional. Entre ellos destacan: David Throsby (Mcquaire University, Sydney), Xavier Greffe (Université de Paris I-Sorbonne). Xavier Roigé y Lluís Bonet (profesores de la Universidad de Barcelona) y Peter Tomlinson (CIF/OIT) son los directores científicos del Master. Junto a los profesores universitarios, participan en el programa funcionarios de la UNESCO y de la OIT completando el cuerpo docente del Master. También imparten clases del master profesionales procedentes de instituciones y empresas culturales. Créditos y titulación El master es de 60 créditos ECTS (sistema de equivalencia europea, 600 horas). Target This study path is designed for post-graduate students coming from all over the world who want to specialize professionally in the curatorial sector, including museums, galleries, fairs or for auction houses. Previous study in the field of Arts and Management are desirable, but not essential. Methodology and Structure The curriculum of the course consists of surveys of modern and international contemporary art, as well as close consideration of visual arts institutions and practices, training in exhibition organization and public programs in museums and not-for-profit galleries, commissioning, writing, publishing and commercial gallery activity. The teaching combines lecture-based courses, self-initiated research, seminars, site visits, and collaborative work. It also involves the realization of a project in partnership with a national pavilion at the Venice Biennale. The duration of the Masters program is divided as follows: seven months of lectures, lab activities, museum and gallery visits, integrated with individual study, project development and three months dedicated to the elaboration of a final Thesis Project that can be undertaken alone or in a group. The Masters program has a very pragmatic approach, providing students with methodology and a step-by-step path that will lead to the realization of an exhibition project. For that reason its structure is divided into 3 main parts: - AREA 1_THEORY The first part provides students with solid introduction to the history of post-WW2 modern and contemporary art, and a critical analysis of recent trends. The history of exhibitions is analyzed in the light of museology, leading to a consideration of current curatorial strategies. - AREA 2_SKILLS AND EXPERTISE The second part is concerned with specific expertise and skills required to develop an efficient working practice in fields of exhibition organization and management, also placing emphasis on audience development through marketing and learning, writing – as required for publication, fundraising etc – and off-site activity. Driven by renowned professionals, this area will be relevant equally for those wishing to pursue careers either in not-for-profit or commercial art worlds, in auction houses or art fairs, commissioning the production of new art work in museums or in the public realm. - AREA 3_PRACTICE The third part is the realization of a curatorial project, starting from an idea to its concrete realization. They will moreover live the experience of the next 57th International Art Exhibition managed by La Biennale of Venice from a special point of view, and special week inside the main cultural institution located in the city.
