Plant biotechnology is becoming increasingly important as a tool to solve some of the global problems related to feed, fuel and ecosystem management in an environmentally friendly and sustainable manner. The Master of Science Programme in Plant and Forest Biotechnology offers students a specialized competence and skills to recognize, understand and find solutions to these challenges. The programme is based upon a set of coordinated courses which together amount to 80 credits (120 ECTS credits) spread over two years. Up-to-date knowledge is provided about plant cell and molecular biology as well as plant growth and development. This is applied in the fields of plant breeding, biotechnology and functional genomics. The programme is organized by the Department of Plant Physiology (Umeå University) and the Department of Forest Genetics and Plant Physiology (Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences) which together form the Umeå Plant Science Centre (UPSC). Aims

The aims of the programme are to provide expertise relevant to multiple-use forestry. A broad range of modules are available that cover forest ecology and silviculture, forest planning and management, forest conservation, forest pathology, urban forestry and environmental governance. Programme modules can be selected to serve the interests of professional foresters wanting to upgrade their knowledge in the fields of forest management planning, tropical forestry and environmental issues, or the interests of graduates wishing to obtain a broad introduction to forestry. Our graduates find employment both in Britain and further afield, some within industry, others in government agencies, conservation, development, or research. The MSc and Postgraduate Diploma in Forestry share common teaching for nine months after which the Masters degree students spend a further three months preparing a thesis or dissertation. Teaching uses a range of media: lectures, seminars and discussions, case studies, practical and field exercises. Each student must participate in a minimum of four modules in each semester, the choice being made following discussion with the programme organiser. Considerable use is made of computers. Students go on a study tour in the Easter vacation; in recent years the study tour has been to forests near Freiberg, Germany. Research towards the thesis may be field or laboratory based. These field studies may be within Scottish forests or overseas.... [-]

Master in Pulp and Paper Technology (PPT)

Due to the impact of globalization and the significance of the technology expansion, it became imperative to prepare students in pulp and paper technology in the Southeast Asia (SEA) region. This is especially important because of the strong presence of pulp and paper industries within this region. The government of Finland generously met this need resulting in the establishment in 1996 of the Pulp and Paper Technology Program (PPT) at the Prestigious AIT. The PPT program offers academic and professional curricula with pulp, paper, bio drying and bio refining specializations for candidates with science and engineering backgrounds within the multidisciplinary research and education environment of AIT. The PPT program along with continuing development of course benefiting industry and in cooperation with North American and European research and educational centers aims to channel information about relevant worldwide academic achievements into SEA pulp and paper and allied industries. These industries thus gain innovative ways to compete successfully within the global marketplace.The PPT program of SERD provides students with comprehensive understanding of the pulp and paper industry, its unit processes, environmental aspects and the sustainability of the processes and products.
