The curriculum of the MPAcc program has been designed to develop and enhance the skills and abilities seen as essential to the practice of professional accounting. Specifically, the development of intellectual, communication, interpersonal, organizational and professional skills is a critical component of the success of this program. Program Objectives The overall program objective is to facilitate the process of transforming a candidate with accounting and other related business knowledge into an accounting professional. Thus, the curriculum for this Master's program equips candidates to practice in an interdisciplinary and global context. In addition the program; extends the candidate's knowledge in areas of organizational study such as the business environment, financial management, strategic management, information systems, and entrepreneurship develops advanced knowledge in traditional areas of practice, such as assurance, financial reporting, and taxation. develops to a professional level the basic skills acquired in an undergraduate program. provides candidates with exposure to aspects of professional practice through various forms of interaction with the professional accounting and business community, including allowing for a period of "on site" employment. equips candidates with research skills appropriate to the task of defining, investigating, sourcing relevant data and information, analysing and preparing recommendations on the resolution of accounting related business problem. Competencies to be Developed The MPAcc program has based its success around the core competencies outlined in the CPA Competency Map. These skills have been divided between two types of competencies: Enabling Competency Areas Technical Competency Areas These two areas work together to create a professional level embodied by the CPA designation. Five Enabling Competencies Professional and Ethical Behaviour: CPAs draw on their ability to act with honesty, integrity, credibility, self-confidence, and independence while coping with ambiguity, conflicts of interest, and the need to protect the public interest. CPAs do more than adhere to the rules of professional conduct, through ethical behavior that exemplifies and enhances the reputation of the profession. Problem-Solving and Decision-Making: CPAs draw on strong analytical and problem-solving skills and their capacity for innovative and integrative thought, as well as their ability to both connect and dissect “parts” and “wholes”, identify and manage priorities, adopt a broad view to arrive at a recommended solution. Communication (both written and oral): CPAs must communicate effectively through listening, understanding, speaking, and writing with clarity and through the art of persuasion and negotiation. CPAs must be able to clearly communicate complex matters to all levels of an entity. Self-management: CPAs must demonstrate the ability to manage their own performance, solicit feedback from others, reflect and act upon it to improve behavior as well as recognize their limits and seek advice when needed. Teamwork and Leadership: CPAs have the ability to work within, build, and lead teams. They must develop competence in goal setting, planning and organization, collaboration, process management, empathy, flexibility, responding to feedback and conflict management. Six Technical Competencies Financial Reporting: Includes the role of financial reporting, the application of reporting frameworks, the reporting of routine and non-routine transactions in different circumstances, and an understanding of the role of internal control, tax, and finance in financial reporting. Strategy and Governance: Includes the role of corporate governance within an organization, as well as the formulation of strategies, the translation of those strategies into specific business objectives and actions, and their implementation. Management Accounting: Includes identifying management information needs and developing the systems required to meet those needs; planning, forecasting, budgeting, cost and revenue management for an entity, and performance measurement systems. Audit and Assurance: Includes enhancing the reliability of information through internal activities such as internal control, internal and comprehensive auditing, and through external third-party assurance services such as auditing. Finance: Includes financial analysis and planning, treasury management, capital budgeting, business valuation, and corporate finance transactions. Taxation: Includes tax compliance and reporting, and tax-planning and implementation strategies for both corporate and personal taxpayers, and an understanding of the administrative process in Canadian taxation. Admission Requirements Admission to the program requires a four-year university baccalauerate degree. Students must demonstrate their ability to pursue advanced study with a minimum 75% overall average in the last two years of undergraduate studies.
